    The Use of Enterprise Systems in a Malaysian Company: A Social Integration Perspective

    Among recent enterprise systems (ES) research, not much attention and focus have been given to the use and management of ES. Thus, we will examine the daily operations of ES from the social integration (SI) perspective. The main purpose is to understand the influence of SI mechanisms in ES application. We adopt an interpretive case study approach, using 40 interviews with employees from a company with 10 years of experience in the management and application of ES. Based on our findings, we have identified three social integration mechanisms- relational reformation, structural reformation and cognitive construction that had influenced the transformation of individual knowledge and expertise to achieve efficient and effective use of ES

    THE DEVELOPMENT OF TRANSFORMATION AMBIDEXTERITY: A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF FOUR LEADING IT ORGANIZATIONS

    Successful IT organizations are ones that can constantly transform themselves to adapt to the changing environment. Unlike the punctuated change in traditional organizations’ transformation, IT organizations’ transformation is often a continuous change where the existing and the new business coexist. The ability to simultaneous exploit the existing business while exploring the new business during organizational transformation, which we term transformation ambidexterity, has proven to a key success factor. This study intends to explore how IT organizations develop transformation ambidexterity. We conduct a comparative case study of four leading IT organizations that have just gone through a successful transformation and unveil four development approaches, namely partition, hybridization, self-extension, and self-generation. These four approaches are based on two primary dimensions of ambidexterity development: 1) development mechanism and 2) development path. We conclude with theoretical contributions to IS, organizational transformation and ambidexterity literature and with guidelines for IT and general managers to redeploy appropriate mechanisms and follow appropriate path for ambidexterity

    \u27Unfreezing-Changing-Refreezing\u27 of Actors\u27 Commitment: The Transition from Escalation to De-Escalation of Commitment to Information Technology Projects

    Escalation is a common and costly problem among IT projects. Although the potential of de-escalation of commitment to failing courses of action has been much heralded, many such efforts may result in failure due to constituencies biasing facts in the direction of previously accepted beliefs, and therefore, prevent an organization from de-escalating. Here, we adopt Lewin’s change framework to examine the commitment transformation during the transition from escalation to de-escalation of an eprocurement project in a local government organization in UK. Our findings suggest that the entire process of ‘unfreezing-changing-refreezing’ was enacted through the deployment of behaviour disconfirmation, psychological safety creation, and development, alignment and integration of new attitudes and behaviours. The research and practical implications of these findings are explored

    Museum in the Age of Digital Transformation

    Transformational technologies have arrived to the traditional institutions accompanied with new promises and challenges. Nevertheless, little research exists to inform our understanding on the transformation undergoing in our aged old institutions. This short paper presents an in- depth case study at a world-renowned museum in China to develop understanding on the digital transformation of a traditional institution. Our preliminary analysis sheds light on the duality of digital transformation through the theoretical lens of technology affordances. On one hand, digital transformation affords unprecedented possibilities for the revitalization of an aged old institution. On the other hand, digital transformation also generates uncertainties and tensions. Our analysis suggests that most traditional institutions are not well-endowed to quickly adapt to the changing needs in the digital environment. These preliminary findings unveil the intricacies of digital transformation in traditional institutions and serve to inform further theorizing around this underresearched phenomenon

    Strategy, resource orchestration and e-commerce enabled social innovation in rural China

    E-commerce enabled social innovation is becoming increasingly important as a way of reducing poverty in developing countries and yet has not been studied much by the IS community. We utilize the concept of resource orchestration as a theoretical lens to develop a fit model that explicates how resources are orchestrated under the guidance of either an indigenous, exogenous or collaborative strategy to achieve e-commerce enabled social innovation. The findings show how resources are orchestrated through the following specific resource-focused actions (collaborating, linking and enriching), which are influenced by the types of strategies applied. Our study also identifies different resource portfolios that influence the type of e-commerce enabled social innovation that can be achieved. This research benefits both academics and practitioners by contributing to cumulative theoretical developments related to e-commerce enabled social innovation and the resource orchestration perspective, and by offering corresponding practical insights to achieve fit between strategy, resource orchestration and social innovation

    DIGITALLY ENABLED GRASSROOTS ENTERPRENEURSHIP FOR RURAL DEVELOPMENT

    ICT has been promoted as a way out of deprivation for rural residents who continue to suffer from a limited access to social-economic developments. However, less is understood about how a marginalized community can drive its own development. Simultaneously, the focus on ICT in developing context has eclipsed the study of ICT for development in existing literature. These observations underscore the need for this study that explores the use of ICT for grassroots entrepreneurship through the phenomenal rise of China Taobao E-commerce Village. Through an in-depth case study, we propose the concept of digitally enabled grassroots entrepreneurship that (1) contributes to the existing ICT4D literature by explicating the roles of ICT (e-commerce) in driving the grassroots entrepreneurship through the emergence of an entrepreneurial ecosystem for a self-driven development, and (2) delineates the process of digitally enabled development beyond the provision of the Internet and infrastructure by presenting the development stages of digitally enabled grassroots entrepreneurship through the opportunity exploitation and opportunity exploration of business, knowledge, and institutional entrepreneurship. The findings also provide a reference point for practitioners to reconsider the external intervention-based development approach

    Developing a Leading Digital Multi-sided Platform: Examining IT Affordances and Competitive Actions in Alibaba.com

    In recent times, digital multi-sided platforms (DMSPs) have revolutionized electronic commerce by enabling new forms of competition and collaboration. Existing studies provide useful insights yet do not recognize the role of information technologies (IT) in examining the development of DMSPs. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted a case study of Alibaba.com (henceforth simply Alibaba), the largest online B2B marketplace in the world with over 80 million members. We applied the theoretical notion of IT affordances to examine the possibilities for competitive action at a platform level based on organizational variables and IT features in the context of the environment in which they function. Our findings show that, toward market leadership, Alibaba has developed competitive actions from actualizing IT affordances. At Alibaba, actualizing IT affordances links closely with its defined organizational goals of developing: (1) a collectivist structure, (2) a coopetitive structure, and (3) an autonomous community among platform constituents. Our stage-wise model captures the relational aspects of IT affordances and proposes actionable prescriptions for a DMSP to achieve market leadership

    Exploring Social Media Affordances in Natural Disaster: Case Study of 2015 Myanmar Flood

    Consumers’ willingness to disclose and allow electronic storage of their personal health information (PHI) is critical to the successful digitization of healthcare. However, concern about privacy and potentially negative consequences of privacy loss (e.g., loss of jobs) can discourage PHI disclosure by consumers. It is thus imperative to identify and address key roadblocks from the perspective of consumers that may impede the progress of developing countries in digitizing healthcare. Toward this end, this research-in-progress integrates the privacy calculus model with procedural justice to investigate the willingness of individuals in developing countries to disclose PHI in order to receive care in contexts where the disclosed PHI is stored and used electronically. A comprehensive model is proposed to explain the determinants of consumer PHI privacy concerns and willingness to disclose PHI. We will test the proposed model using the survey method. Several theoretical contributions expected from the study are provided
