Beginning with a discussion of the concept of housing policy, this article proposes a comprehensive conceptual framework that relates the wide range of state actions regarding housing with the outcomes observed in the housing market along with the housing conditions of the population. This conceptual framework is then illustrated with a review of the principal elements of Argentine housing policy throughout history, in order to lay out a renewed agenda for research on housing policy in the social sciences.

Housing policy and residential segregation: A methodological proposal

    Get PDF
This article proposes a methodology for evaluating the connection between the location of social housing units and preexisting residential segregation processes. Spatial analysis techniques are applied in order to do so, facilitated by the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The methodology is applied to the case of the Federal Housing Construction Programs in the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area (AMBA) between 2004 and 2019. Georeferenced census data are used to characterize residential segregation processes, through an assessment of the unequal distribution of different socioeconomic groups in the AMBA. Then, with information on the location of social housing units, spatial point patterns are analyzed in order to show their irregular distribution throughout the study area. Lastly, the correlation between these two phenomena is explored in order to determine the extent to which social housing units are more likely to be located in areas defined as segregated (relatively homogenous areas of low socioeconomic status). As results show that areas with greater territorial disadvantage also tend to concentrate social housing units, the article concludes with some reflections on the need for more comprehensive and socially inclusive housing policies.Fil: Palumbo, Joseph Anthony. Widespread Antisense Transcription in Escherichia coli

    Get PDF
The vast majority of annotated transcripts in bacteria are mRNAs. Here we identify ~1,000 antisense transcripts in the model bacterium Escherichia coli. We propose that these transcripts are generated by promiscuous transcription initiation within genes and that many of them regulate expression of the overlapping gene

    Laboratory-acquired vaccinia infection

Abstract Background: Complications following vaccination with vaccinia virus have been well described but are not commonly observed. The use of vaccinia as a tool in molecular biology, in the development of therapeutics, and the anticipated increase of vaccinations in the general population due to the threat of bioterrorism have created a renewed awareness of the post-vaccination complications and the consequent need for clinical and laboratory diagnosis. Objectives: To report the clinical presentation and subsequent diagnosis of generalized vaccinia that resulted from a laboratory accident in an unvaccinated subject. Study design: The patient was seen by a local infectious disease's specialist and evaluated clinically and with laboratory support relative to a differential diagnosis. Results: Careful assessment of the patient's history, an evaluation of the workplace, and the elimination of likely microbial etiologies led to the diagnosis of generalized vaccinia. Laboratory confirmation was obtained by use of electron microscopy (EM) to observe poxvirus particles in infected cell cultures. Conclusions: Exposure to vaccinia virus should raise the index of suspicion for patients with skin lesions. Rapid diagnosis may be accomplished by direct examination of lesion material by EM. The virus also readily replicates in commonly available cell cultures and in the absence of immune reagents, typical poxvirus particles may be observed in the infected cells by EM

The JET Library kicked off 2017 with an always well-received event, our annual “Beat the Blahs” Party, sponsored by the Office of the President. This year, we featured a dessert table where members of the Molloy Community brought in their favorite desserts to share with everyone. We also held our first JET Bake-off, with Karen Cusumano, Executive Assistant in the President’s Office, being awarded a “Certificate in Excellence in Baking” with her “Classic Sour Cream Cheese Cake.” Requests have been received by the library asking if she will share her recipe! Although we definitely did enjoy a delicious feast, I think the consensus is unanimous when I say that the best part of the event was being able to spend time with everyone, engaging in good conversation, laughter and blintzes. In 2016, we welcomed several new members to the library; Tabitha Ochtera, Shikha Joseph and Sean Williams whom we look forward to you getting to know in our “Welcoming our New Additions” section. Theresa Rienzo, Associate Librarian Health Sciences and Head of Patron Services, an integral member of the JET Library is featured in our “Spotlight” article. A new column titled “What we are reading” was added, where our librarians and staff share their opinions on books from our collection. Among the various other articles, we would like to bring special attention to the “Did you know?” article where you can learn more about a new resource recently activated in the Ovid database, as well as SWANK, one of JET Library’s streaming video databases. Last but certainly not least, meet JET Library’s Official Mascot, Luciano
