Evaluation of the causes of error in the mcd45 burned-area product for the savannas of northern south america
Forest fires contribute to deforestation and have been considered a significant source of CO2 emissions. There are global maps that estimate the area affected by fire using the reflectance variation of the surface. In this study we evaluated the reliability and the causes of error of the MCD45 Burned Area Product, by applying the confusion matrix method to the Orinoco River basin. This basin is located in the northern zone of South America, and consists mainly of savanna ecosystemst. For the evaluation we used as reference data five pairs of Landsat images, covering 165,000 km2. The Burned Area Product estimated a burned area of 7,576.43 km2, which is lower than the area of 12,100.16 km2 found with Landsat images, leading to an overall underestimation. The causes of error are associated to the spatial resolution of the map, and to some structures of the algorithm that generates the map
Analysis of Floodplain Dynamics in the Atrato River Colombia Using SAR Interferometry
Floodplain water flows have large volumetric flowrates and high complexity in space and time that are difficult to understand using water level gauges. We here analyze the spatial and temporal fluctuations of surface water flows in the floodplain of the Atrato River, Colombia, in order to evaluate their hydrological connectivity. The basin is one of the rainiest areas of the world with wetland ecosystems threatened by the expansion of agriculture and mining activities. We used 16 Differential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radars (DInSAR) phase observations from the ALOS-PALSAR L-band instrument acquired between 2008–2010 to characterize the flow of surface water. We were able to observe water level change in vegetated wetland areas and identify flooding patterns. In the lower basin, flow patterns are conditioned by fluctuations in the levels of the main river channel, whereas in the middle basin, topography and superficial channels strongly influence the flow and connectivity. We found that the variations in water level in a station on the main channel 87 km upstream explained more than 56% of the variations in water level in the floodplain. This result shows that, despite current expansion of agriculture and mining activities, there remain significant hydrological connectivity between wetlands and the Atrato River. This study demonstrates the use of DInSAR for a spatially comprehensive monitoring of the Atrato River basin hydrology. For the first time, we identified the spatiotemporal patterns of surface water flow of the region. We recommend these observations serve as a baseline to monitor the potential impact of ongoing human activities on surface water flows across the Atrato River basin
Data for wetlandscapes and their changes around the world
Geography and associated hydrological, hydroclimate and land-use conditions and their changes determine the states and dynamics of wetlands and their ecosystem services. The influences of these controls are not limited to just the local scale of each individual wetland but extend over larger landscape areas that integrate multiple wetlands and their total hydrological catchment – the wetlandscape. However, the data and knowledge of conditions and changes over entire wetlandscapes are still scarce, limiting the capacity to accurately understand and manage critical wetland ecosystems and their services under global change. We present a new Wetlandscape Change Information Database (WetCID), consisting of geographic, hydrological, hydroclimate and land-use information and data for 27 wetlandscapes around the world. This combines survey-based local information with geographic shapefiles and gridded datasets of large-scale hydroclimate and land-use conditions and their changes over whole wetlandscapes. Temporally, WetCID contains 30-year time series of data for mean monthly precipitation and temperature and annual land-use conditions. The survey-based site information includes local knowledge on the wetlands, hydrology, hydroclimate and land uses within each wetlandscape and on the availability and accessibility of associated local data. This novel database (available through PANGAEA https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.907398; Ghajarnia et al., 2019) can support site assessments; cross-regional comparisons; and scenario analyses of the roles and impacts of land use, hydroclimatic and wetland conditions, and changes in whole-wetlandscape functions and ecosystem services
Priorities and interactions of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with focus on wetlands
Wetlands are often vital physical and social components of a country's natural capital, as well as providers of ecosystem services to local and national communities. We performed a network analysis to prioritize Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) targets for sustainable development in iconic wetlands and wetlandscapes around the world. The analysis was based on the information and perceptions on 45 wetlandscapes worldwide by 49 wetland researchers of the GlobalWetland Ecohydrological Network (GWEN). We identified three 2030 Agenda targets of high priority across the wetlandscapes needed to achieve sustainable development: Target 6.3-'Improve water quality'; 2.4-'Sustainable food production'; and 12.2-'Sustainable management of resources'. Moreover, we found specific feedback mechanisms and synergies between SDG targets in the context of wetlands. The most consistent reinforcing interactions were the influence of Target 12.2 on 8.4-'Efficient resource consumption'; and that of Target 6.3 on 12.2. The wetlandscapes could be differentiated in four bundles of distinctive priority SDG-targets: 'Basic human needs', 'Sustainable tourism', 'Environmental impact in urban wetlands', and 'Improving and conserving environment'. In general, we find that the SDG groups, targets, and interactions stress that maintaining good water quality and a 'wise use' of wetlandscapes are vital to attaining sustainable development within these sensitive ecosystems. © 2019 by the authors
The Research Journey as a Challenge Towards New Trends
The academic community of the department of Risaralda, in its permanent interest in evidencing the results of the research processes that are carried out from the Higher Education Institutions and as a product of the VI meeting of researchers of the department of Risaralda held in November 2021 presents its work: “The journey of research as a challenge towards new trends”, which reflects the result of the latest research and advances in different lines of knowledge in Agricultural Sciences, Health Sciences, Social Sciences and Technology and Information Sciences, which seek to solve and meet the demands of the different sectors.

Anales del III Congreso Internacional de Vivienda y Ciudad "Debate en torno a la nueva agenda urbana"
Acta de congresoEl III Congreso Internacional de Vivienda y Ciudad “Debates en torno a la NUEVa Agenda Urbana”, ha sido una apuesta de alto compromiso por acercar los debates centrales y urgentes que tensionan el pleno ejercicio del derecho a la ciudad. Para ello las instituciones organizadoras (INVIHAB –Instituto de Investigación de Vivienda y Hábitat y MGyDH-Maestría en Gestión y Desarrollo Habitacional-1), hemos convidado un espacio que se concretó con potencia en un debate transdisciplinario. Convocó a intelectuales de prestigio internacional, investigadores, académicos y gestores estatales, y en una metodología de innovación articuló las voces académicas con las de las organizaciones sociales y/o barriales en el Foro de las Organizaciones Sociales que tuvo su espacio propio para dar voz a quienes están trabajando en los desafíos para garantizar los derechos a la vivienda y los bienes urbanos en nuestras ciudades del Siglo XXI

Los incendios forestales son considerados una causa significativa de deforestación y emisiones de CO2. Existen productos globales que estiman el área afectada por el fuego utilizando las variaciones de reflectividad en la superficie terrestre. En este estudio se evaluó la fiabilidad y las causas de error del producto de área quemada MCD45, usando el método de matrices de confusión, para la cuenca hidrográfica del río Orinoco. Esta cuenca se ubica en la zona norte de Sur América, y predominan allí los ecosistemas de sabana. Para la evaluación se utilizó como información de referencia cinco pares de imágenes Landsat cubriendo 165.000 km2. El producto de área quemada estimó un área afectada de 7.576,43 km2, inferior a los 12.100,16 km2 hallados con las imágenes Landsat. Estimación de atributos estructurales en un fragmento de bosque tropical natural utilizando imágenes de muy alta resolución obtenidas con sistemas aéreos no tripulados
Structural attributes are fundamental biophysical parameters of forest, useful for ecological and environmental monitoring and planning. Canopy height is an important input for the estimation of several biophysical parameters as aboveground biomass and carbon stock, and can be related with forest degradation, deforestation, and emission reduction. Thus, an accurate canopy height estimation is a crucial issue in climate change studies and REDD+ initiatives. VHR imagery from unmanned aircraft systems has been studied as a low cost mean for canopy height estimation at local scales, but the accuracy in the estimation is a factor that determines its utility. We evaluated the ability of VHR imagery from unmanned aircraft systems to derive structural attributes, specifically tree-crown area and height, in a natural tropical forest fragment located in the foothills of the Andes Mountains, in the humid tropical forests of the region known as Biogeographic Chocó, South America. The region is one of the most biodiverse areas of the world and has a high level of endemism, but it is also at higher risk of natural-resource loss. We used a structure from motion approach to derive canopy height models of the forest fragment, and we applied mean-shift algorithms to identify single tree crowns. The accuracy assessment was performed using reference data derived from field campaigns and visually interpretation of VHR imagery. The estimated root-mean-square error of the population of vertical errors for the canopy height model was 3.6 m. The total accuracy for delineating tree crowns was 73.9%. We found that using VHR imagery, specific trees and canopy gaps can be identified and easily monitored, which is an important step in conservation programs. We also discuss the usefulness of these findings in the context of fragmented forests and the tradeoffs between the price of a LIDAR system and the accuracy of this approach.Los atributos estructurales son parámetros biofísicos fundamentales de un bosque, útiles para el monitoreo y la planificación ecológica y ambiental. La altura del dosel de un árbol es un insumo importante para la estimación de varios parámetros biofísicos como la biomasa aérea y las reservas de carbono, y puede relacionarse con la degradación forestal, la deforestación y la reducción de emisiones. Por lo tanto, una estimación precisa de la altura del dosel es un tema crucial en los estudios de cambio climático y las iniciativas REDD+. Las imágenes VHR de sistemas de aeronaves no tripuladas se han estudiado como un medio de bajo costo para la estimación de la altura del dosel a escalas locales, pero la precisión en su estimación es un factor que determina su utilidad. Se evaluó la capacidad de las imágenes VHR de los sistemas de aeronaves no tripuladas para derivar atributos estructurales, específicamente el área y la altura de las copas de los árboles, en un fragmento de bosque tropical natural ubicado en las estribaciones de la Cordillera de los Andes, en los bosques tropicales húmedos de la región conocida como Chocó Biogeográfico, Sudamérica. La región es una de las áreas con mayor biodiversidad del mundo y tiene un alto nivel de endemismo, pero también tiene el mayor riesgo de pérdida de recursos naturales. Se usó un enfoque de estructura a partir de movimiento para derivar modelos de altura del dosel del fragmento de bosque, y se aplicaron algoritmos de desplazamiento medio para identificar las copas de árbol. La evaluación de la precisión se realizó utilizando datos de referencia derivados de campañas de campo e interpretación visual de imágenes VHR. El error cuadrático medio estimado de la población de errores verticales para el modelo de altura del dosel fue de 3,6 m. La precisión total para delinear las copas de los árboles fue del 73,9%. Se encuentra que utilizando imágenes VHR, se pueden identificar y monitorear fácilmente árboles específicos y brechas, lo cual es un paso importante en los programas de conservación. También se discute la utilidad de estos hallazgos en el contexto de bosques fragmentados y las compensaciones entre el precio de un sistema LIDAR y la precisión de este enfoque
