Undertreatment of allergy: Exploring the utility of sublingual immunotherapy

    Get PDF
ABSTRACT Allergic syndromes are highly prevalent and are comprised of a wide variety of clinical problems, including rhinitis, conjunctivitis, atopic dermatitis and urticaria, asthma, and food allergies. Numerous studies have shown that allergic syndromes are both underdiagnosed and undertreated. This is related to many factors, including trivialization of allergic conditions by physicians and patients, failure to adhere to diagnostic and treatment guidelines, and dissatisfaction with conventional pharmacologic treatments. Immunotherapy involves the administration of allergen extracts in an attempt to induce immunologic tolerance and has been used for the treatment of allergic syndromes and the prevention of long-term complications. Conventional subcutaneous immunotherapy is effective but is also associated with a risk of serious adverse events, requires administration by a trained health care professional, and is contraindicated in certain populations. By contrast, sublingual immunotherapy has been used extensively in Europe and possesses most of the benefits of subcutaneous immunotherapy along with increased safety, tolerability, and convenience. This narrative review explores data from selected clinical studies and concludes that sublingual immunotherapy may be well suited to fill the gap posed by the undertreatment of allergic syndromes in the United States

Progress in Developing Industry Standard Test Requirements for Pb-Free Solder Alloys

    Get PDF
Abstract Recently, the industry has seen the development of a wide range of new Pb-free alloys. A significant element of uncertainty within the industry regarding these new alloys is the lack of defined data requirements for alloy acceptance. This paper describes the progress of recent efforts to standardize Pb-free solder alloy testing requirements. Hewlett-Packard, the iNEMI consortium, the Solder Products Value Council, and the IPC are working together to create such standards. To facilitate the standardization of alloy testing, the required tests are divided into three major areas, each of which may be covered by a separate standard. • Material properties • Solder joint reliability • Impact to manufacturing processes This paper presents the status of standardization efforts in each of these three areas

An overview of progress in electrolytes for secondary zinc-air batteries and other storage systems based on zinc

The revived interest and research on the development of novel energy storage systems with exceptional inherent safety, environmentally benign and low cost for integration in large scale electricity grid and electric vehicles is now driven by the global energy policies. Within various technical challenges yet to be resolved and despite extensive studies, the low cycle life of the zinc anode is still hindering the implementation of rechargeable zinc batteries at industrial scale. This review presents an extensive overview of electrolytes for rechargeable zinc batteries in relation to the anode issues which are closely affected by the electrolyte nature. Widely studied aqueous electrolytes, from alkaline to acidic pH, as well as non-aqueous systems including polymeric and room temperature ionic liquids are reported. References from early rechargeable Zn-air research to recent results on novel Zn hybrid systems have been analyzed. The ambition is to identify the challenges of the electrolyte system and to compile the proposed improvements and solutions. Ultimately, all the technologies based on zinc, including the more recently proposed novel zinc hybrid batteries combining the strong points of lithium-ion, redox-flow and metal-air systems, can benefit from this compilation in order to improve secondary zinc based batteries performance.Basque Country University (ZABALDUZ2012 program), and the Basque Country Government (Project: CIC energiGUNÉ16 of the ELKARTEK program) and the European Commission through the project ZAS: “Zinc Air Secondary innovative nanotech based batteries for efficient energy storage” (Grant Agreement 646186
