    Exploring rationales for branding a university: Should we be seeking to measure branding in UK universities?

    Although branding is now widespread among UK universities, the application of branding principles in the higher education sector is comparatively recent and may be controversial for internal audiences who question its suitability and efficiency. This paper seeks to investigate how and whether the effectiveness of branding activity in the higher education sector should be evaluated and measured, through exploratory interviews with those who often drive it; UK University marketing professionals. Conclusions suggest that university branding is inherently complex and therefore application of commercial approaches may be over simplistic. Whilst marketing professionals discuss challenges they do not necessarily have a consistent view of the objectives of branding activity although all were able to clearly articulate branding objectives for their university, including both qualitative and, to some extent, quantitative metrics. Some measures of the real value of branding activity are therefore suggested but a key debate is perhaps whether the objectives and role of branding in higher education needs to be clarified, and a more consistent view of appropriate metrics reached? Various challenges in implementing branding approaches are also highlighted

    Potential cognitive endophenotypes in multigenerational families: segregating ADHD from a genetic isolate

    Endophenotypes are neurobiological markers cosegregating and associated with illness. These biomarkers represent a promising strategy to dissect ADHD biological causes. This study was aimed at contrasting the genetics of neuropsychological tasks for intelligence, attention, memory, visual-motor skills, and executive function in children from multigenerational and extended pedigrees that cluster ADHD in a genetic isolate. In a sample of 288 children and adolescents, 194 (67.4%) ADHD affected and 94 (32.6%) unaffected, a battery of neuropsychological tests was utilized to assess the association between genetic transmission and the ADHD phenotype. We found significant differences between affected and unaffected children in the WISC block design, PIQ and FSIQ, continuous vigilance, and visual-motor skills, and these variables exhibited a significant heritability. Given the association between these neuropsychological variables and ADHD, and also the high genetic component underlying their transmission in the studied pedigrees, we suggest that these variables be considered as potential cognitive endophenotypes suitable as quantitative trait loci (QTLs) in future studies of linkage and association

    Vegetation of Patagonia

    In this chapter, we describe the major phytogeographic provinces of Patagonia. Emphasis is placed on physiognomic vegetation formations, internal heterogeneity, and degree of anthropic disturbance. Main vegetation formations within provinces include temperate forests, steppes, moorlands, and shrublands. Internal plant heterogeneity is high in all provinces and is associated with climate, soils, altitude, and natural (e.g., volcanism) or anthropogenic disturbances. The most important anthropogenic disturbance varies among provinces in relation to vegetation formations. Domestic grazing is a widespread disturbance agentin steppes and shrublands, while oil and natural gas extraction may also cause disturbances affecting local plant communities in some areas. In contrast, clearing for agriculture and afforestation are common in temperate forests. Invasion of exotic plants and animals are also a threat for the conservation of pristine vegetation. Disturbances, together with the ongoing climate change, can strongly influence vegetation structure and functioning that in turn could affect populations of wild animals, particularly lizards.Fil: Bisigato, Alejandro Jorge.
