Limits of the energy-momentum tensor in general relativity
A limiting diagram for the Segre classification of the energy-momentum tensor
is obtained and discussed in connection with a Penrose specialization diagram
for the Segre types. A generalization of the coordinate-free approach to limits
of Paiva et al. to include non-vacuum space-times is made. Geroch's work on
limits of space-times is also extended. The same argument also justifies part
of the procedure for classification of a given spacetime using Cartan scalars.Comment: LaTeX, 21 page
Limits of space-times in five dimensions and their relation to the Segre Types
A limiting diagram for the Segre classification in 5-dimensional space-times
is obtained, extending a recent work on limits of the energy-momentum tensor in
general relativity. Some of Geroch's results on limits of space-times in
general relativity are also extended to the context of five-dimensional
Kaluza-Klein space-times.Comment: Late
Consequences of the intracellular distribution of cyclic 3′,5′-nucleotides phosphodiesterases
The presence at the same location in the cell of the enzymatic systems responsible for the synthesis and degradation of a metabolite or signal, in particular cyclic 3',5' adenosine monophosphate (cAMP), ensures a more homogeneous distribution of this agent in the cell. In the case of the thyroid cAMP system, it was shown that diffusion is rather fast and therefore plays little role in the kinetics of cAMP action on the cell.SCOPUS: ar.jinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe
Charge-density waves in one-dimensional Hubbard superlattices
We study the formation of charge density waves (CDW's) in one-dimensional
Hubbard superlattices, modeled by a repeated pattern of repulsive (U>0) and
free (U=0) sites. By means of Lanczos diagonalizations for the ground state, we
calculate the charge structure factor. Our results show that while the
superlattice structure affects the modulation of the charge density waves, the
periodicity can still be predicted through an effective density. We also show
that, for a fixed repulsive layer thickness, the periodicity of the CDW is an
oscillatory function of the free layer thickness.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Dispersion and re-aggregation phenomena in carbon nanotube polymer composites
The preparation of polymer nanocomposites is usually carried out in twin-screw extruders or internal batch mixers. Previous studies have extensively shown that the resulting filler dispersion is strongly dependent on the characteristics of the melt mixing equipment. It is also known that the dispersion level of nanofillers strongly affects the final nanocomposite properties.
The present work focuses on the study of the dispersion of carbon nanotubes (CNT) in polypropylene using a prototype mixer that develop high thermomechanical stress. The distribution and dispersion of the CNT was evaluated by optical and electron microscopy. The level of dispersion achieved was analysed, and the electrical resistivity of the composite, along the mixing cycles, was measured.
The enhancement of the CNT dispersion along the mixing process correlated with a large decrease in electrical resistivity of the composite. A “percolation time”, defined as the time, or number of mixing cycles, required to achieve electrical conductivity, was measured, and correlated with mixing conditions. The composite formed was re-heated and reprocessed using the same mixing system. Re-agglomeration and loss of electrical conductivity was observed, and the final dispersion level varied with the mixing conditions imposed. Agglomerate size and electrical resistivity increased when reprocessing was performed at lower shear rate, as compared to the first processing cycle
