Comment on the Adiabatic Condition
The experimental observation of effects due to Berry's phase in quantum
systems is certainly one of the most impressive demonstrations of the
correctness of the superposition principle in quantum mechanics. Since Berry's
original paper in 1984, the spin 1/2 coupled with rotating external magnetic
field has been one of the most studied models where those phases appear. We
also consider a special case of this soluble model. A detailed analysis of the
coupled differential equations and comparison with exact results teach us why
the usual procedure (of neglecting nondiagonal terms) is mathematically sound.Comment: 9 page
Past and future blurring at fundamental length scale
We obtain the -deformed versions of the retarded and advanced Green
functions and show that their causality properties are blurred in a time
interval of the order of a length parameter . The functions also
indicate a smearing of the light cone. These results favor the interpretation
of as a fundamental length scale below which the concept of a point in
spacetime should be substituted by the concept of a fuzzy region of radius ,

Analysis of frequency and intensity of European winter storm events from a multi-model perspective, at synoptic and regional scales
This study focuses on the analysis of winter (October-November-December-January-February-March; ONDJFM) storm events and their changes due to increased anthropogenic greenhouse gas concentrations over Europe. In order to assess uncertainties that are due to model formulation, 4 regional climate models (RCMs) with 5 high resolution experiments, and 4 global general circulation models (GCMs) are considered. Firstly, cyclone systems as synoptic scale processes in winter are investigated, as they are a principal cause of the occurrence of extreme, damage-causing wind speeds. This is achieved by use of an objective cyclone identification and tracking algorithm applied to GCMs. Secondly, changes in extreme near-surface wind speeds are analysed. Based on percentile thresholds, the studied extreme wind speed indices allow a consistent analysis over Europe that takes systematic deviations of the models into account. Relative changes in both intensity and frequency of extreme winds and their related uncertainties are assessed and related to changing patterns of extreme cyclones. A common feature of all investigated GCMs is a reduced track density over central Europe under climate change conditions, if all systems are considered. If only extreme (i.e. the strongest 5%) cyclones are taken into account, an increasing cyclone activity for western parts of central Europe is apparent; however, the climate change signal reveals a reduced spatial coherency when compared to all systems, which exposes partially contrary results. With respect to extreme wind speeds, significant positive changes in intensity and frequency are obtained over at least 3 and 20% of the European domain under study (35–72°N and 15°W–43°E), respectively. Location and extension of the affected areas (up to 60 and 50% of the domain for intensity and frequency, respectively), as well as levels of changes (up to +15 and +200% for intensity and frequency, respectively) are shown to be highly dependent on the driving GCM, whereas differences between RCMs when driven by the same GCM are relatively small
Dripping Faucet Dynamics Clarified by an Improved Mass-Spring Model
An improved mass-spring model for a dripping faucet is presented. The model
is constructed based on the numerical results which we recently obtained from
fluid dynamical calculations. Both the fluid dynamical calculations and the
present mass-spring model exhibit a variety of complex behavior including
transition to chaos in good agreement with experiments. Further, the
mass-spring model reveals fundamental dynamics inherent in the dripping faucet

O Brasil é um dos seis maiores produtores de manga do mundo com 1,3 milhão de toneladas e uma área de 75,2 mil hectares. No entanto, a exportação de manga, em 2010, foi de cerca de 140 mil toneladas, o que representou apenas 10,3% dessa produção. A diversificação na oferta da manga para os mercados interno e externo tem sido feita desde o fruto fresco de produção convencional, à manga orgânica de manejo bastante especÃfico e, mais recentemente, há uma tendência no aumento da demanda pela manga processada. Para atender a essa demanda, deve-se não somente melhorar o parque industrial, mas também o desenvolvimento genético, as estratégias e a seleção de cultivares e técnicas de manejo que atendam à s diversas exigências do mercado para frutos frescos, orgânicos e processados. Este trabalho tem como objetivo sugerir aos melhoristas de manga, estratégias eficientes na obtenção e seleção da chamada ?cultivar ideal?, e aos produtores e exportadores discutir técnicas mais eficientes que atendam à s exigências de maior produção e qualidade da manga como resposta à dinâmica de demanda dos mercados internos e externos.Número especial
Imaginary Phases in Two-Level Model with Spontaneous Decay
We study a two-level model coupled to the electromagnetic vacuum and to an
external classic electric field with fixed frequency. The amplitude of the
external electric field is supposed to vary very slow in time. Garrison and
Wright [{\it Phys. Lett.} {\bf A128} (1988) 177] used the non-hermitian
Hamiltonian approach to study the adiabatic limit of this model and obtained
that the probability of this two-level system to be in its upper level has an
imaginary geometric phase. Using the master equation for describing the time
evolution of the two-level system we obtain that the imaginary phase due to
dissipative effects is time dependent, in opposition to Garrison and Wright
result. The present results show that the non-hermitian hamiltonian method
should not be used to discuss the nature of the imaginary phases in open

Spontaneous emission between an unusual pair of plates
We compute the modification in the spontaneous emission rate for a two-level
atom when it is located between two parallel plates of different nature: a
perfectly conducting plate and an infinitely permeable
one . We also discuss the case of two infinitely permeable
plates. We compare our results with those found in the literature for the case

Reconstructing Deconstruction: High-Velocity Cloud Distance Through Disruption Morphology
We present Arecibo L-band Feed Array 21-cm observations of a sub-complex of
HVCs at the tip of the Anti-Center Complex. These observations show
morphological details that point to interaction with the ambient halo medium
and differential drag within the cloud sub-complex. We develop a new technique
for measuring cloud distances, which relies upon these observed morphological
and kinematic characteristics, and show that it is consistent with H-alpha
distances. These results are consistent with distances to HVCs and halo
