(ONTO)2 Agent: an Ontology-based WWW broker to select ontologies
Knowledge reuse by means of ontologies now faces three
important problems: (1) there are no standardized identifying features that characterize ontologies from the user point of view; (2) there are no web sites using the same logical organization, presenting relevant information about ontologies; and (3) the search for appropriate ontologies is hard, timeconsuming and usually fruitless. To solve the above problems, we present: (1) a living set of features that allow us to characterize ontologies from the user point of view and have the same logical organization; (2) a living domain ontology about ontologies (called Reference Ontology) that gathers, describes and has links to existing ontologies; and (3) (ONTO)2Agent, the ontology-based www broker about ontologies that uses the Reference Ontology as a source of its knowledge and retrieves descriptions of ontologies that satisfy a given set of constraints. Study protocol for a multicentre longitudinal mixed methods study to explore the Outcomes of ChildrEn and fAmilies in the first year after paediatric Intensive Care: the OCEANIC study.
INTRODUCTION: Annually in the UK, 20 000 children become very ill or injured and need specialist care within a paediatric intensive care unit (PICU). Most children survive. However, some children and their families may experience problems after they have left the PICU including physical, functional and/or emotional problems. It is unknown which children and families experience such problems, when these occur or what causes them. The aim of this mixed-method longitudinal cohort study is to understand the physical, functional, emotional and social impact of children surviving PICU (aged: 1 month-17 years), their parents and siblings, during the first year after a PICU admission. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: A quantitative study involving 300 child survivors of PICU; 300 parents; and 150-300 siblings will collect data (using self-completion questionnaires) at baseline, PICU discharge, 1, 3, 6 and 12 months post-PICU discharge. Questionnaires will comprise validated and reliable instruments. Demographic data, PICU admission and treatment data, health-related quality of life, functional status, strengths and difficulties behaviour and post-traumatic stress symptoms will be collected from the child. Parent and sibling data will be collected on the impact of paediatric health conditions on the family's functioning capabilities, levels of anxiety and social impact of the child's PICU admission. Data will be analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Concurrently, an embedded qualitative study involving semistructured interviews with 24 enrolled families at 3 months and 9 months post-PICU discharge will be undertaken. Framework analysis will be used to analyse the qualitative data. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: The study has received ethical approval from the National Health Services Research Ethics Committee (Ref: 19/WM/0290) and full governance clearance. This will be the first UK study to comprehensively investigate physical, functional, emotional and social consequences of PICU survival in the first-year postdischarge.Clinical Trials Registration Number: ISRCTN28072812 [Pre-results]
Dilaton Quantum Cosmology with a Schrodinger-like equation
A quantum cosmological model with radiation and a dilaton scalar field is
analysed. The Wheeler-deWitt equation in the mini-superspace induces a
Schr\"odinger equation, which can be solved. An explicit wavepacket is
constructed for a particular choice of the ordering factor. A consistent
solution is possible only when the scalar field is a phantom field. Moreover,
although the wavepacket is time dependent, a Bohmian analysis allows to extract

Microkinetic analysis of ethanol to 1,3-butadiene reactions over MgO-SiO 2 catalysts based on characterization of experimental fluctuations
Microkinetic analysis of ethanol to 1,3-butadiene reactions over MgO-SiO2 catalysts was performed based on the detailed characterization of experimental fluctuations, taking into account the influence of the reaction temperature and catalyst properties on ethanol conversion and product selectivities. The obtained results show that both reaction temperature and catalysts properties affected experimental fluctuations significantly. The local microkinetic information contained in the covariance matrix of experimental fluctuations indicated the change of the rate-limiting step as reaction temperature increased: from 300 to 400 °C, the rate-limiting step was identified as the acetaldehyde condensation, while at 450 °C, ethanol dehydrogenation step limits the 1,3-butadiene production
Hybrid endoscopic thymectomy : combined transesophageal and transthoracic approach in a survival porcine model with cadaver assessment
BACKGROUND:
Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery thymectomy has been used in the treatment of Myastenia Gravis and thymomas (coexisting or not). In natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery, new approaches to the thorax are emerging as alternatives to the classic transthoracic endoscopic surgery. The aim of this study was to assess the feasibility and reliability of hybrid endoscopic thymectomy (HET) using a combined transthoracic and transesophageal approach.
METHODS:
Twelve consecutive in vivo experiments were undertaken in the porcine model (4 acute and 8 survival). The same procedure was assessed in a human cadaver afterward. For HET, an 11-mm trocar was inserted in the 2nd intercostal space in the left anterior axillary line. A 0° 10-mm thoracoscope with a 5-mm working channel was introduced. Transesophageal access was created through a submucosal tunnel using a flexible gastroscope with a single working channel introduced through the mouth. Using both flexible (gastroscope) and rigid (thoracoscope) instruments, the mediastinum was opened; the thymus was dissected, and the vessels were ligated using electrocautery alone.
RESULTS:
Submucosal tunnel creation and esophagotomy were performed safely without incidents in all animals. Complete thymectomy was achieved in all experiments. All animals in the survival group lived for 14 days. Thoracoscopic and postmortem examination revealed pleural adhesions on site of the surgical procedure with no signs of infection. Histological analysis of the proximal third of the esophagus revealed complete cicatrization of both mucosal defect and myotomy site. In the human cadaver, we were able to replicate all the procedure even though we were not able to identify the thymus.
CONCLUSIONS:
Hybrid endoscopic thymectomy is feasible and reliable. HET could be regarded as a possible alternative to classic thoracoscopic approach for patients requiring thymectomy.This project was funded by the FCT Grants project PTDC/SAU-OSM/105578/2008
Practical computational toolkits for dendrimers and dendrons structure design
Dendrimers and dendrons offer an excellent platform for developing novel drug delivery systems and medicines. The rational design and further development of these repetitively branched systems are restricted by difficulties in scalable synthesis and structural determination, which can be overcome by judicious use of molecular modelling and molecular simulations. A major difficulty to utilise in silico studies to design dendrimers lies in the laborious generation of their structures. Current modelling tools utilise automated assembly of simpler dendrimers or the inefficient manual assembly of monomer precursors to generate more complicated dendrimer structures. Herein we describe two novel graphical user interface (GUI) toolkits written in Python that provide an improved degree of automation for rapid assembly of dendrimers and generation of their 2D and 3D structures. Our first toolkit uses the RDkit library, SMILES nomenclature of monomers and SMARTS reaction nomenclature to generate SMILES and mol files of dendrimers without 3D coordinates. These files are used for simple graphical representations and storing their structures in databases. The second toolkit assembles complex topology dendrimers from monomers to construct 3D dendrimer structures to be used as starting points for simulation using existing and widely available software and force fields. Both tools were validated for ease-of-use to prototype dendrimer structure and the second toolkit was especially relevant for dendrimers of high complexity and size.Peer reviewe
An iterative algorithm for parametrization of shortest length shift registers over finite rings
The construction of shortest feedback shift registers for a finite sequence
S_1,...,S_N is considered over the finite ring Z_{p^r}. A novel algorithm is
presented that yields a parametrization of all shortest feedback shift
registers for the sequence of numbers S_1,...,S_N, thus solving an open problem
in the literature. The algorithm iteratively processes each number, starting
with S_1, and constructs at each step a particular type of minimal Gr\"obner
basis. The construction involves a simple update rule at each step which leads
to computational efficiency. It is shown that the algorithm simultaneously
computes a similar parametrization for the reciprocal sequence S_N,...,S_1.Comment: Submitte
Dynamic clamp with StdpC software
Dynamic clamp is a powerful method that allows the introduction of artificial electrical components into target cells to simulate ionic conductances and synaptic inputs. This method is based on a fast cycle of measuring the membrane potential of a cell, calculating the current of a desired simulated component using an appropriate model and injecting this current into the cell. Here we present a dynamic clamp protocol using free, fully integrated, open-source software (StdpC, for spike timing-dependent plasticity clamp). Use of this protocol does not require specialist hardware, costly commercial software, experience in real-time operating systems or a strong programming background. The software enables the configuration and operation of a wide range of complex and fully automated dynamic clamp experiments through an intuitive and powerful interface with a minimal initial lead time of a few hours. Secular evolution versus hierarchical merging: galaxy evolution along the Hubble sequence, in the field and rich environments
In the current galaxy formation scenarios, two physical phenomena are invoked
to build disk galaxies: hierarchical mergers and more quiescent external gas
accretion, coming from intergalactic filaments. Although both are thought to
play a role, their relative importance is not known precisely. Here we consider
the constraints on these scenarios brought by the observation-deduced star
formation history on the one hand, and observed dynamics of galaxies on the
other hand: the high frequency of bars and spirals, the high frequency of
perturbations such as lopsidedness, warps, or polar rings.
All these observations are not easily reproduced in simulations without
important gas accretion. N-body simulations taking into account the mass
exchange between stars and gas through star formation and feedback, can
reproduce the data, only if galaxies double their mass in about 10 Gyr through
gas accretion. Warped and polar ring systems are good tracers of this
accretion, which occurs from cold gas which has not been virialised in the
system's potential. The relative importance of these phenomena are compared
between the field and rich clusters. The respective role of mergers and gas
