Seismic data reveal eastern Black Sea Basin structure
Rifted continental margins are formed by progressive extension of the lithosphere. The development of these margins plays an integral role in the plate tectonic cycle, and an understanding of the extensional process underpins much hydrocarbon exploration. A key issue is whether the lithosphere extends uniformly, or whether extension varies\ud
with depth. Crustal extension may be determined using seismic techniques. Lithospheric extension may be inferred from the waterloaded subsidence history, determined from\ud
the pattern of sedimentation during and after rifting. Unfortunately, however, many rifted margins are sediment-starved, so the subsidence history is poorly known.\ud
To test whether extension varies between the crust and the mantle, a major seismic experiment was conducted in February–March 2005 in the eastern Black Sea Basin (Figure 1), a deep basin where the subsidence history is recorded\ud
by a thick, post-rift sedimentary sequence. The seismic data from the experiment indicate the presence of a thick, low-velocity zone, possibly representing overpressured sediments. They also indicate that the basement and\ud
Moho in the center of the basin are both several kilometers shallower than previously inferred. These initial observations may have considerable impact on thermal models of the petroleum system in the basin. Understanding\ud

User-generated censorship : manipulating the maps of social media

Vita.Includes bibliographical references.The last decade has seen the rise of new technologies for making information more broadly available and accessible. Variously called 'user-generated content,' 'social media,''social news,' 'crowd-curation,' and so on, these design conventions, algorithmic arrangements, and user practices have been widely praised for 'democratizing' media by lowering the barriers to publishing, accrediting, and aggregating information. Intermediary platforms like Facebook, reddit, and Twitter, among others, are generally expected to elicit valuable knowledge through the algorithmic filtering mechanisms broadly distributed among their users. This thesis investigates user-generated censorship: an emergent mode of intervention by which users strategically manipulate social media to suppress speech. It shows that the tools designed to help make information more available have been repurposed and reversed to make it less available. Case studies reveal that these platforms, far from being neutral pipes through which information merely travels, are in fact contingent sociotechnical systems upon and through which users effect their politics through the power of algorithms. By strategically pulling the levers which make links to sites more or less visible, users recompose the representations of the world produced by social media, altering pathways of access and availability and changing the flow of information. This thesis incorporates insights from media studies, sociology, law and policy, information science, and science-technology studies to study user-generated censorship. It contributes to a broader conversation now emerging across fields which seeks to explore and understand the politics of our developing social media systems.by Christopher E. Peterson.S.M
Minimum pressure envelope cavitation analysis using two-dimensional panel method
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, 2008.Includes bibliographical references (leaf 42).An analysis tool for calculating minimum pressure envelopes was developed using XFOIL. This thesis presents MATLAB® executables that interface with a modified version of XFOIL for determining the minimum pressure of a foil operating in an inviscid fluid. The code creates minimum pressure envelopes, similar to those published by Brockett (1965). XFOIL, developed by Mark Drela in 1986, is a design system for Low Reynolds Number Airfoils that combines the speed and accuracy of high-order panel methods with fully-coupled viscous/inviscid interaction. XFOIL was altered such that it reads in command line arguments that provide operating instructions, rather than operator interaction via menu options. In addition, all screen output and plotting functions were removed. These modifications removed XFOIL's user interface, and created a "black box" version of XFOIL that would perform the desired calculations and write the output to a file. These modifications allow rapid execution and interface by an external program, such as MATLAB®. In addition, XFOIL's algorithms provide a significant improvement in the accuracy of minimum pressure prediction over the method published by Brockett. Development of the modified XFOIL and MATLAB® interface contained in this thesis is intended for future interface with Open-source Propeller Design and Analysis Program (OpenProp). OpenProp is an open source MATLAB®-based suite of propeller design tools. Currently, OpenProp performs parametric analysis and single propeller design, but does not perform cavitation analysis. Minimum pressure envelopes provide the propeller designer information about operating conditions encountered by propellers.(cont.) The code developed in this thesis allows the designer to rapidly assess cavitation conditions while in the design phase, and make modifications to propeller blade design in order to optimize cavitation performance. The Two Dimensional Kondo Model with Rashba Spin-Orbit Coupling
We investigate the effect that Rashba spin-orbit coupling has on the low
energy behaviour of a two dimensional magnetic impurity system. It is shown
that the Kondo effect, the screening of the magnetic impurity at temperatures T
< T_K, is robust against such spin-orbit coupling, despite the fact that the
spin of the conduction electrons is no longer a conserved quantity. A proposal
is made for how the spin-orbit coupling may change the value of the Kondo
temperature T_K in such systems and the prospects of measuring this change are
discussed. We conclude that many of the assumptions made in our analysis
invalidate our results as applied to recent experiments in semi-conductor
quantum dots but may apply to measurements made with magnetic atoms placed on

Disparate MgII Absorption Statistics towards Quasars and Gamma-Ray Bursts : A Possible Explanation
We examine the recent report by Prochter et al. (2006) that gamma-ray burst
(GRB) sight lines have a much higher incidence of strong MgII absorption than
quasar sight lines. We propose that the discrepancy is due to the different
beam sizes of GRBs and quasars, and that the intervening MgII systems are
clumpy with the dense part of each cloudlet of a similar size as the quasars,
i.e. < 10^16 cm, but bigger than GRBs. We also discuss observational
predictions of our proposed model. Most notably, in some cases the intervening
MgII absorbers in GRB spectra should be seen varying, and quasars with smaller
sizes should show an increased rate of strong MgII absorbers. In fact, our
prediction of variable MgII lines in the GRB spectra has been now confirmed by
Hao et al. (2007), who observed intervening FeII and MgII lines at z=1.48 to be

An oncogenic role for sphingosine kinase 2
While both human sphingosine kinases (SK1 and SK2) catalyze the generation of the pleiotropic signaling lipid sphingosine 1-phosphate, these enzymes appear to be functionally distinct. SK1 has well described roles in promoting cell survival, proliferation and neoplastic transformation. The roles of SK2, and its contribution to cancer, however, are much less clear. Some studies have suggested an antiproliferative/ pro-apoptotic function for SK2, while others indicate it has a prosurvival role and its inhibition can have anti-cancer effects. Our analysis of gene expression data revealed that SK2 is upregulated in many human cancers, but only to a small extent (up to 2.5-fold over normal tissue). Based on these findings, we examined the effect of different levels of cellular SK2 and showed that high-level overexpression reduced cell proliferation and survival, and increased cellular ceramide levels. In contrast, however, low-level SK2 overexpression promoted cell survival and proliferation, and induced neoplastic transformation in vivo. These findings coincided with decreased nuclear localization and increased plasma membrane localization of SK2, as well as increases in extracellular S1P formation. Hence, we have shown for the first time that SK2 can have a direct role in promoting oncogenesis, supporting the use of SK2-specific inhibitors as anti-cancer agents.Heidi A. Neubauer, Duyen H. Novel biofortified sorghum lines with combined waxy (high amylopectin) starch and high protein digestibility traits : effects on endosperm and flour properties
Novel biofortified sorghum lines have been developed with both waxy starch (high amylopectin) and
high protein digestibility traits. Eight sorghum lines with different combinations of waxy, non-waxy,
high- and normal-protein digestibility traits were studied in relation to flour properties. Lines with
the high protein digestibility trait had loosely packed starch granules and floury endosperm, irrespective
of whether they were waxy or non-waxy. In terms of thermal properties, combined waxy-high digestibility
lines had the highest onset endothermic temperature as well as endothermic energy
compared to non-waxy, normal protein digestibility lines. The waxy-high protein digestibility lines had
higher paste viscosity and formed much softer and less sticky pastes than the non-waxy, normal protein
digestibility lines. Flours of the combined waxy-high protein digestibility sorghum lines had much higher
solubility than the non-waxy- normal protein digestibility lines. At 30 C flour solubility, waxy-high
protein digestibility sorghum lines flour was similar to commercial wheat bread flours. The high flour
solubility, high pasting viscosity and soft paste of sorghum lines with combined waxy and high protein
digestibility traits indicate that their flours may have better properties for making dough-based food

Quasars and their host galaxies
This review attempts to describe developments in the fields of quasar and
quasar host galaxies in the past five. In this time period, the Sloan and 2dF
quasar surveys have added several tens of thousands of quasars, with Sloan
quasars being found to z>6. Obscured, or partially obscured quasars have begun
to be found in significant numbers. Black hole mass estimates for quasars, and
our confidence in them, have improved significantly, allowing a start on
relating quasar properties such as radio jet power to fundamental parameters of
the quasar such as black hole mass and accretion rate. Quasar host galaxy
studies have allowed us to find and characterize the host galaxies of quasars
to z>2. Despite these developments, many questions remain unresolved, in
particular the origin of the close relationship between black hole mass and
galaxy bulge mass/velocity dispersion seen in local galaxies.Comment: Review article, to appear in Astrophysics Update
Neutrino Interferometry In Curved Spacetime
Gravitational lensing introduces the possibility of multiple (macroscopic)
paths from an astrophysical neutrino source to a detector. Such a multiplicity
of paths can allow for quantum mechanical interference to take place that is
qualitatively different to neutrino oscillations in flat space. After an
illustrative example clarifying some under-appreciated subtleties of the phase
calculation, we derive the form of the quantum mechanical phase for a neutrino
mass eigenstate propagating non-radially through a Schwarzschild metric. We
subsequently determine the form of the interference pattern seen at a detector.
We show that the neutrino signal from a supernova could exhibit the
interference effects we discuss were it lensed by an object in a suitable mass
range. We finally conclude, however, that -- given current neutrino detector
technology -- the probability of such lensing occurring for a

The links between agriculture, Anopheles mosquitoes, and malaria risk in children younger than 5 years in the Democratic Republic of the Congo: a population-based, cross-sectional, spatial study
Background: The relationship between agriculture, Anopheles mosquitoes, and malaria in Africa is not fully understood, but it is important for malaria control as countries consider expanding agricultural projects to address population growth and food demand. Therefore, we aimed to assess the effect of agriculture on Anopheles biting behaviour and malaria risk in children in rural areas of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DR Congo). Methods: We did a population-based, cross-sectional, spatial study of rural children (0]=0·89), with the probability of malaria infection increased between 0·2% (95% UI −0·1 to 3·4) and 2·6% (–1·5 to 6·6) given a 15% increase in agricultural cover, depending on other risk factors. The models predicted that large increases in agricultural cover (from 0% to 75%) increase the probability of infection by as much as 13·1% (95% UI −7·3 to 28·9). Increased risk might be due to Anopheles gambiae sensu lato, whose probability of biting indoors increased between 11·3% (95% UI −15·3 to 25·6) and 19·7% (–12·1 to 35·9) with a 15% increase in agriculture. Interpretation: Malaria control programmes must consider the possibility of increased risk due to expanding agriculture. Governments considering initiating large-scale agricultural projects should therefore also consider accompanying additional malaria control measures.
