    Length-weight relationships of coral reef fishes from the Alacran Reef, Yucatan, Mexico

    Length-weight relationships were computed for 42 species of coral reef fishes from 14 families from the Alacran Reef (Yucatan, Mexico). A total of 1 892 individuals was used for this purpose. The fish species were caught by different fishing techniques such as fishhooks, harpoons, gill and trawl nets. The sampling period was from March 1998 to January 2000

    MACHe3, a prototype for non-baryonic dark matter search: KeV event detection and multicell correlation

    Superfluid He3 at ultra-low temperatures (100 microKelvins) is a sensitive medium for the bolometric detection of particles. MACHe3 (MAtrix of Cells of Helium 3) is a project for non-baryonic dark matter search using He3 as a sensitive medium. Simulations made on a high granularity detector show a very good rejection to background signals. A multicell prototype including 3 bolometers has been developed to allow correlations between the cells for background event discrimination. One of the cells contains a low activity Co57 source providing conversion electrons of 7.3 and 13.6 keV to confirm the detection of low energy events. First results on the multicell prototype are presented. A detection threshold of 1 keV has been achieved. The detection of low energy conversion electrons coming from the Co57 source is highlighted as well as the cosmic muon spectrum measurement. The possibility to reject background events by using the correlation among the cells is demonstrated from the simultaneous detection of muons in different cells

    Star formation in the massive cluster merger Abell 2744

    We present a comprehensive study of star-forming (SF) galaxies in the HST Frontier Field recent cluster merger A2744 (z=0.308). Wide-field, ultraviolet-infrared (UV-IR) imaging enables a direct constraint of the total star formation rate (SFR) for 53 cluster galaxies, with SFR{UV+IR}=343+/-10 Msun/yr. Within the central 4 arcmin (1.1 Mpc) radius, the integrated SFR is complete, yielding a total SFR{UV+IR}=201+/-9 Msun/yr. Focussing on obscured star formation, this core region exhibits a total SFR{IR}=138+/-8 Msun/yr, a mass-normalised SFR{IR} of Sigma{SFR}=11.2+/-0.7 Msun/yr per 10^14 Msun and a fraction of IR-detected SF galaxies f{SF}=0.080(+0.010,-0.037). Overall, the cluster population at z~0.3 exhibits significant intrinsic scatter in IR properties (total SFR{IR}, Tdust distribution) apparently unrelated to the dynamical state: A2744 is noticeably different to the merging Bullet cluster, but similar to several relaxed clusters. However, in A2744 we identify a trail of SF sources including jellyfish galaxies with substantial unobscured SF due to extreme stripping (SFR{UV}/SFR{IR} up to 3.3). The orientation of the trail, and of material stripped from constituent galaxies, indicates that the passing shock front of the cluster merger was the trigger.     Spatially resolved kinematics in the central 1 kpc of a compact star-forming galaxy at z=2.3 from ALMA CO observations

    We present high spatial resolution (FWHM∌\sim0.14'') observations of the CO(8−78-7) line in GDS-14876, a compact star-forming galaxy at z=2.3z=2.3 with total stellar mass of log⁥(M⋆/M⊙)=10.9\log(M_{\star}/M_{\odot})=10.9. The spatially resolved velocity map of the inner râ‰Č1r\lesssim1~kpc reveals a continous velocity gradient consistent with the kinematics of a rotating disk with vrot(r=1kpc)=163±5v_{\rm rot}(r=1\rm kpc)=163\pm5 km s−1^{-1} and vrot/σ∌2.5v_{\rm rot}/\sigma\sim2.5. The gas-to-stellar ratios estimated from CO(8−78-7) and the dust continuum emission span a broad range, fgasCO=Mgas/M⋆=13−45%f^{\rm CO}_{\rm gas}=M_{\rm gas}/M_{\star}=13-45\% and fgascont=50−67%f^{\rm cont}_{\rm gas}=50-67\%, but are nonetheless consistent given the uncertainties in the conversion factors. The dynamical modeling yields a dynamical mass oflog⁥(Mdyn/M⊙)=10.58−0.2+0.5\log(M_{\rm dyn}/M_{\odot})=10.58^{+0.5}_{-0.2} which is lower, but still consistent with the baryonic mass, log⁥\log(Mbar_{\rm bar}= M⋆_{\star} + MgasCO^{\rm CO}_{\rm gas}/M⊙_{\odot})=11.0=11.0, if the smallest CO-based gas fraction is assumed. Despite a low, overall gas fraction, the small physical extent of the dense, star-forming gas probed by CO(8−78-7), ∌3×\sim3\times smaller than the stellar size, implies a strong concentration that increases the gas fraction up to fgasCO,1kpc∌85%f^{\rm CO, 1\rm kpc}_{\rm gas}\sim 85\% in the central 1 kpc. Such a gas-rich center, coupled with a high star-formation rate, SFR∌\sim 500 M⊙_{\odot} yr−1^{-1}, suggests that GDS-14876 is quickly assembling a dense stellar component (bulge) in a strong nuclear starburst. Assuming its gas reservoir is depleted without replenishment, GDS-14876 will quickly (tdepl∌27t_{\rm depl}\sim27 Myr) become a compact quiescent galaxy that could retain some fraction of the observed rotational support.Comment: Accepted for Publication in ApJL.     We report the detection of a z~7 galaxy strongly lensed by the massive galaxy cluster Abell 2218 (z=0.175) at 3.6 and 4.5 um using the Spitzer Observatory and at 1.1 um using the Hubble Space Telescope. The new data indicate a refined photometric redshift in the range of 6.6-6.8 depending on the presence of Ly-alpha emission. The spectral energy distribution is consistent with having a significant Balmer break, suggesting that the galaxy is in the poststarburst stage with an age of at least ~50 Myr and quite possibly a few hundred Myr. This suggests the possibility that a mature stellar population is already in place at such a high redshift. Compared with typical Lyman break galaxies at z~3-4, the stellar mass is an order of magnitude smaller (~10^{9} Msun), but the specific star formation rate (star formation rate/M_{star}) is similarly large (> 10^{-9} yr^{-1}), indicating equally vigorous star-forming activity.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures, 2 tables; Accepted for publication in ApJ

    Interspecies DNA acquisition by a naturally competent Acinetobacter baumannii strain

    The human pathogen Acinetobacter baumannii possesses high genetic plasticity and frequently acquires antimicrobial resistance genes. Here we investigated the role of natural transformation in these processes. Genomic DNA from different sources, including from carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae strains, was mixed with A. baumannii A118 cells. Selected transformants were analysed by whole-genome sequencing. In addition, bioinformatics analyses and in silico gene flow prediction were also performed to support the experimental results. Transformant strains included some that became resistant to carbapenems or changed their antimicrobial susceptibility profile. Foreign DNA acquisition was confirmed by whole-genome analysis. The acquired DNA most frequently identified corresponded to mobile genetic elements, antimicrobial resistance genes and operons involved in metabolism. Bioinformatics analyses and in silico gene flow prediction showed continued exchange of genetic material between A. baumannii and K. pneumoniae when they share the same habitat. Natural transformation plays an important role in the plasticity of A. baumannii and concomitantly in the emergence of multidrug-resistant strains.Fil: Traglia, German Matias.
