Energy in an Expanding Universe in the Teleparallel Geometry
The main purpose of this paper is to explicitly verify the consistency of the
energy-momentum and angular momentum tensor of the gravitational field
established in the Hamiltonian structure of the Teleparallel Equivalent of
General Relativity (TEGR). In order to reach these objectives, we obtained the
total energy and angular momentum (matter plus gravitational field) of the
closed universe of the Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW). The result
is compared with those obtained from the pseudotensors of Einstein and
Landau-Lifshitz. We also applied the field equations (TEGR) in an expanding
FLRW universe. Considering the stress energy-momentum tensor for a perfect
fluid, we found a teleparallel equivalent of Friedmann equations of General
Relativity (GR).Comment: 19 pages, no figures. Revised in view of Referee's comments. Version

Angular-planar CMB power spectrum
Gaussianity and statistical isotropy of the Universe are modern cosmology's
minimal set of hypotheses. In this work we introduce a new statistical test to
detect observational deviations from this minimal set. By defining the
temperature correlation function over the whole celestial sphere, we are able
to independently quantify both angular and planar dependence (modulations) of
the CMB temperature power spectrum over different slices of this sphere. Given
that planar dependence leads to further modulations of the usual angular power
spectrum , this test can potentially reveal richer structures in the
morphology of the primordial temperature field. We have also constructed an
unbiased estimator for this angular-planar power spectrum which naturally
generalizes the estimator for the usual 's. With the help of a chi-square
analysis, we have used this estimator to search for observational deviations of
statistical isotropy in WMAP's 5 year release data set (ILC5), where we found
only slight anomalies on the angular scales and . Since this
angular-planar statistic is model-independent, it is ideal to employ in
searches of statistical anisotropy (e.g., contaminations from the galactic
plane) and to characterize non-Gaussianities.Comment: Replaced to match the published version. Journal-ref: Phys.Rev. D80

Tkachenko polarons in vortex lattices
We analyze the properties of impurities immersed in a vortex lattice formed
by ultracold bosons in the mean field quantum Hall regime. In addition to the
effects of a periodic lattice potential, the impurity is dressed by collective
modes with parabolic dispersion (Tkachenko modes). We derive the effective
polaron model, which contains a marginal impurity-phonon interaction. The
polaron spectral function exhibits a Lorentzian broadening for arbitrarily
small wave vectors even at zero temperature, in contrast with the result for
optical or acoustic phonons. The anomalous damping of Tkachenko polarons could
be detected experimentally using momentum-resolved spectroscopy.Comment: 10 pages, 2 figure
Conditions for free magnetic monopoles in nanoscale square arrays of dipolar spin ice
We study a modified frustrated dipolar array recently proposed by M\"{o}ller
and Moessner [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{96}, 237202 (2006)], which is based on
an array manufactured lithographically by Wang \emph{et al.} [Nature (London)
\textbf{439}, 303 (2006)] and consists of introducing a height offset
between islands (dipoles) pointing along the two different lattice directions.
The ground-states and excitations are studied as a function of . We have
found, in qualitative agreement with the results of M\"{o}ller and Moessner,
that the ground-state changes for , where ( is the
lattice parameter or distance between islands). In addition, the excitations
above the ground-state behave like magnetic poles but confined by a string,
whose tension decreases as increases, in such a way that for
its value is around 20 times smaller than that for . The system exhibits
an anisotropy in the sense that the string tension and magnetic charge depends
significantly on the directions in which the monopoles are separated. In turn,
the intensity of the magnetic charge abruptly changes when the monopoles are
separated along the direction of the longest axis of the islands. Such a gap is
attributed to the transition from the anti to the ferromagnetic ground-state
when .Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures. Published versio
Vortices in the presence of a nonmagnetic atom impurity in 2D XY ferromagnets
Using a model of nonmagnetic impurity potential, we have examined the
behavior of planar vortex solutions in the classical two-dimensional XY
ferromagnets in the presence of a spin vacancy localized out of the vortex
core. Our results show that a spinless atom impurity gives rise to an effective
potential that repels the vortex structure.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, RevTex
