Non-Collinear Ferromagnetic Luttinger Liquids
The presence of electron-electron interactions in one dimension profoundly
changes the properties of a system. The separation of charge and spin degrees
of freedom is just one example. We consider what happens when a system
consisting of a ferromagnetic region of non-collinearity, i.e. a domain wall,
is coupled to interacting electrons in one-dimension (more specifically a
Luttinger liquid). The ferromagnetism breaks spin charge separation and the
presence of the domain wall introduces a spin dependent scatterer into the
problem. The absence of spin charge separation and the effects of the electron
correlations results in very different behaviour for the excitations in the
system and for spin-transfer-torque effects in this model.Comment: 6 pages, submitted to Journal of Physics: Conference Series for JEMS

How to position Portugal as one of the main European destination references in senior tourism
The presented project consists in a strategic development of Portugal as a Touristic Destination which major goal is to understand how can Portugal become a major player in senior tourism, as segment of the population that already represents both in volume and value the most attractive travel segment.
With the increasing ageing of the world’s population, seniors are pointed out to become the most valuable consumer segment. These have increasing available time to travel and they have the disposable income to spend in travel experiences as a primary motivation.
This being said, the goal is to develop a strategy targeted not only to those who may be already considered seniors, but also to the other generations namely Baby-Boomers and members of Generation X that will become seniors in a 10 to 20 year period. In order to do it effectively, this strategy must take into account the need to create an emotional relationship with those consumers, while our touristic offer must be developed and continuously adapted to their evolution in terms of needs and travel behavioursinfo:eu-repo/semantics/submittedVersio
Upper bound for the conductivity of nanotube networks
Films composed of nanotube networks have their conductivities regulated by
the junction resistances formed between tubes. Conductivity values are enhanced
by lower junction resistances but should reach a maximum that is limited by the
network morphology. By considering ideal ballistic-like contacts between
nanotubes we use the Kubo formalism to calculate the upper bound for the
conductivity of such films and show how it depends on the nanotube
concentration as well as on their aspect ratio. Highest measured conductivities
reported so far are approaching this limiting value, suggesting that further
progress lies with nanowires other than nanotubes.Comment: 3 pages, 1 figure. Minor changes. Accepted for publication in Applied

Screening forCronobacterSpecies in Powdered and Reconstituted Infant Formulas and from Equipment Used in Formula Preparation in Maternity Hospitals
Background/Aims: Cronobacter spp. have been identified as being of considerable risk to neonates. The occurrence of organism in infant formulas is therefore of considerable interest. Methods: The occurrence of Cronobacter spp. in infant feeds (formulas and fortified cow’s milk) was determined using most probable number (MPN) analysis, and from formula preparation utensils. Ninety nine samples were analyzed, of which 42 were unopened cans of powdered infant formula (PIF), 25 reconstituted infant formulas in feeding bottles, 27 utensils used from the preparation of infant formula, and 5 samples of fortified cow’s milk. Presumptive Cronobacter spp. isolates were identified using the 7 allele multilocus sequence typing (MLST) scheme. Results: C. sakazakii, C. malonaticus and C. muytjensii were recovered from PIF. Although the incidence of Cronobacter in PIF was 29% (12/42), the level was low with an average of 0.54 MPN/100g. According to MLST profiling, C. sakazakii was the most frequently isolated Cronobacter species, and C. sakazakii ST4 (associated with neonatal meningitis) was recovered from 2/42 PIF samples at 0.51 and 0.92 MPN/100g. Conclusions: Cronobacter spp. can be isolated from PIF and therefore strict hygienic practices during PIF preparation are important to minimize neonate exposure and reduce the risk of severe infections
Killing vectors and anisotropy
We consider an action that can generate fluids with three unequal stresses
for metrics with a spacelike Killing vector. The parameters in the action are
directly related to the stress anisotropies. The field equations following from
the action are applied to an anisotropic cosmological expansion and an
extension of the Gott-Hiscock cosmic string
Approximation of periodic solutions for a dissipative hyperbolic equation
This paper studies the numerical approximation of periodic solutions for an exponentially stable linear hyperbolic equation in the presence of a periodic external force f. These approximations are obtained by combining a fixed point algorithm with the Galerkin method. It is known that the energy of the usual discrete models does not decay uniformly with respect to the mesh size. Our aim is to analyze this phenomenon's consequences on the convergence of the approximation method and its error estimates. We prove that, under appropriate regularity assumptions on f, the approximation method is always convergent. However, our error estimates show that the convergence's properties are improved if a numerically vanishing viscosity is added to the system. The same is true if the nonhomogeneous term f is monochromatic. To illustrate our theoretical results we present several numerical simulations with finite element approximations of the wave equation in one or two dimensional domains and with different forcing terms
Achieving organizational effectiveness of MNCs through people: Evidence from India and Mozambique
Purpose – The purpose of this study is to provide human resource (HR) practitioners of multinational
companies aspiring to invest in these two countries with guidelines for attaining organizational
effectiveness through people.
Design/methodology/approach – This study develops and tests a multiple criteria decision-making
model with data collected in the banking sectors of India and Mozambique. It compares the job
engagement, team building and innovation strategy preferences of Indian personnel with those of
Mozambican employees.
Findings – The findings of the study reveal the differences in the perceptions of the respondents of both
countries regarding the importance of the strategies for organizational effectiveness.
Research limitations/implications – Despite several contributions, the study has certain limitations too.
Although utmost care was taken to avoid the issue of common method variance, the cross-sectional selfreported design of the study might be adversely affected by common method bias (MacKenzie and
Podsakoff, 2012). Hence, future research might be conducted using different designs, such as diary
studies or longitudinal studies. Future research might also be conducted making use of organizational
productivity case studies to demonstrate the practicability of customizing the HR strategies using the
multi-attribute decision-making approach.
Practical implications – This body of work is an addition to the existing literature on cross-national
studies in the field of HR management (HRM) and adds to the limited literature on HRM in the least
developed countries. The study is designed to provide guidelines for the HR practitioners of multinational companies in these two countries to help them achieve enhanced organizational effectiveness.
This should be of particular interest to the HR managers of the Indian companies aspiring to invest in
Mozambique.
Originality/value – Research in the area of HRM is mainly limited to the developed and developing
nations, with very few studies centering on emerging economies. While most cross-national studies on
organizational effectiveness are also largely focused on developed and developing nations, this study is
unusual, in that its focus is on a fast-developing nation (India) and an emerging economy (Mozambique).info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio
