HEALTH, FOOD SAFETY AND MEAT DEMAND
For nearly two decades, the U.S. beef industry has faced a long term structural change, which has resulted in consumers shifting from beef to chicken. This shift has occurred due to consumer concerns on cholesterol consumption. More recently, this industry has confronted new challenges on the safety of beef, due to the potential presence of biological contaminants. This study incorporates a measure on food safety with a measure on health information in a meat demand system. Beef safety information is found to have a modest impact on beef demand, but is dominated by health information.meat demand, health, food safety, LA/AIDS, Food Consumption/Nutrition/Food Safety, Livestock Production/Industries,
Ultra-high molecular weight silphenylene-siloxane polymers
Silphenylene-siloxane copolymers with molecular weights above one million were prepared using a two stage polymerization technique. The technique was successfully scaled up to produce 50 grams of this high polymer in a single run. The reactive monomer approach was also investigated using the following aminosilanes: bis(dimethylamino)dimethylsilane, N,N-bis(pyrrolidinyl)dimethylsilane and N,N-bis(gamma-butyrolactam)dimethylsilane). Thermal analyses were performed in both air and nitrogen. The experimental polymers decomposed at 540 to 562 C, as opposed to 408 to 426 C for commercial silicones. Differential scanning calorimetry showed a glass transition (Tg) at -50 to -55 C for the silphenylene-siloxane copolymer while the commercial silicones had Tg's at -96 to -112 C
Genesis of breath sounds-Preliminary verification of theory
Experimental results are presented which tend to validate a previously developed theory of sound production in the human lung over a particular Reynolds number range. In addition, a new, presently nonunderstood, phenomenon was observed at higher Reynolds number. These results, which show how sound generation in the lung depends upon the physiologically important variables of volume flow rate and bronchial diameter, have potentially important application in noninvasive lung examination and the diagnosis of lung disease
Electric propulsion options for the SP-100 reference mission
Analyses were performed to characterize and compare electric propulsion systems for use on a space flight demonstration of the SP-100 nuclear power system. The component masses of resistojet, arcjet, and ion thruster systems were calculated using consistent assumptions and the maximum total impulse, velocity increment, and thrusting time were determined, subject to the constraint of the lift capability of a single Space Shuttle launch. From the study it was found that for most systems the propulsion system dry mass was less than 20 percent of the available mass for the propulsion system. The maximum velocity increment was found to be up to 2890 m/sec for resistojet, 3760 m/sec for arcjet, and 23 000 m/sec for ion thruster systems. The maximum thruster time was found to be 19, 47, and 853 days for resistojet, arcjet, and ion thruster systems, respectively
Through the eyes of others - The social experiences of people with dementia: A systematic literature review and synthesis
Psychosocial models suggest that the lived experience of dementia is affected by interpersonal factors such as the ways in which others view, talk about, and behave toward the person with dementia. This review aimed to illuminate how informal, everyday interpersonal relationships are experienced by people with dementia within their social contexts. A systematic review of qualitative literature published between 1989 and May 2016 was conducted, utilizing the electronic databases PsycINFO, MEDLINE, and CINAHL-Complete. This was followed by a critical interpretative synthesis to understand how people with dementia perceive the attitudes, views, and reactions of other people toward them, and the subjective impact that these have. Four major themes were derived from the findings of the 23 included studies: being treated as an “other” rather than “one of us”; being treated as “lesser” rather than a full, valued member of society; the impact of others’ responses; and strategies to manage the responses of others. Thus, people with dementia can feel outcast and relegated, or indeed feel included and valued by others. These experiences impact upon emotional and psychological well-being, and are actively interpreted and managed by people with dementia. Experiences such as loss and diminishing identity have previously been understood as a direct result of dementia, with little consideration of interpersonal influences. This review notes that people with dementia actively engage with others, whose responses can foster or undermine social well-being. This dynamic relational aspect may contribute to emerging understandings of social health in dementia
A review of residual stress analysis using thermoelastic techniques
Thermoelastic Stress Analysis (TSA) is a full-field technique for experimental stress analysis
that is based on infra-red thermography. The technique has proved to be extremely effective for
studying elastic stress fields and is now well established. It is based on the measurement of the
temperature change that occurs as a result of a stress change. As residual stress is essentially a
mean stress it is accepted that the linear form of the TSA relationship cannot be used to
evaluate residual stresses. However, there are situations where this linear relationship is not
valid or departures in material properties due to manufacturing procedures have enabled
evaluations of residual stresses. The purpose of this paper is to review the current status of
using a TSA based approach for the evaluation of residual stresses and to provide some
examples of where promising results have been obtained
Electrochemical Energy Storage Subsystems Study, Volume 2
The effects on life cycle costs (LCC) of major design and performance technology parameters for multi kW LEO and GEO energy storage subsystems using NiCd and NiH2 batteries and fuel cell/electrolysis cell devices were examined. Design, performance and LCC dynamic models are developed based on mission and system/subsystem requirements and existing or derived physical and cost data relationships. The models are exercised to define baseline designs and costs. Then the major design and performance parameters are each varied to determine their influence on LCC around the baseline values

Deformed Brueckner-Hartree-Fock calculations
The renormalized Brueckner-Hartree-Fock (RBHF) theory for many-body nuclear systems is generalized to permit calculations for intrinsic states having permanent deformation. Both Hartree-Fock and Brueckner self-consistencies are satisfied, and details of the numerical techniques are discussed. The Hamada-Johnston interaction is used in a study of deformations, binding, size, and separation energies for several nuclei. Electromagnetic transition rates, moments, and electron scattering form factors are calculated using nuclear wave functions obtained by angular momentum projection. Comparison is made to experiment as well as to predictions of ordinary and density-dependent Hartree-Fock Theory
