Petiolar anatomy of some hitherto unstudied Acanthaceae

    Get PDF
Anatomy of petioles of 20 species belonging to 12 genera of the family Acanthaceae is investigated. The observations pertain to outline of petiole in T. S., the cell wall contours of epidermis, hypodermis, conjunctive tissue, besides the vascular tissue and cell inclusions, if any. The vascular tissue is generally resolved in an central arc and few vascular bundles. The various anatomical features differ taxon to taxon and hence found useful for their identification.&nbsp

Direct to consumer advertising via the Internet, a study of hip resurfacing

    Get PDF
With increased use of the internet for health information and direct to consumer advertising from medical companies, there is a concern about the quality of the information available for patients. The aim of this study was to examine the quality of health information on the internet for hip resurfacing. An assessment tool was designed to measure quality of information. Websites were measured on credibility of source; usability; currentness of the information; content relevance; content accuracy/completeness and disclosure/bias. Each website assessed was given a total score, based on number of scores achieved from the above categories websites were further analysed on author, geographical origin and possession of an independent credibility check. There was positive correlation between the overall score for the website and the score of each website in each assessment category. Websites by implant companies, doctors and hospitals scored poorly. Websites with an independent credibility check such as Health on the Net (HoN) scored twice the total scores of websites without. Like other internet health websites, the quality of information on hip resurfacing websites is variable. This study highlights methods by which to assess the quality of health information on the internet and advocates that patients should look for a statement of an "independent credibility check" when searching for information on hip resurfacing

Enhanced cytotoxicity of silver complexes bearing bidentate N-heterocyclic carbene ligands

    Get PDF
A diverse library of cationic silver complexes bearing bis(N-heterocyclic carbene) ligands have been prepared which exhibit cytotoxicity comparable to cisplatin against the adenocarcinomas MCF7 and DLD1. Bidentate ligands show enhanced cytotoxicity over monodentate and macrocyclic ligands

Participatory cotton breeding for organic and low input farming in Central India

    Get PDF
Up to 80% of world’s organic cotton is produced in India. However, involved producers are facing increased difficulties to find suitable cultivars. Few hybrids selected for high input farming and genetically-modified (GM) cotton, which is explicitly excluded in organic farming, are presently dominating the Indian seed market. In addition farmers have lost their traditional knowledge on seed production and hybrid seed needs to be purchased each season

Statistical Assertions for Validating Patterns and Finding Bugs in Quantum Programs

In support of the growing interest in quantum computing experimentation, programmers need new tools to write quantum algorithms as program code. Compared to debugging classical programs, debugging quantum programs is difficult because programmers have limited ability to probe the internal states of quantum programs; those states are difficult to interpret even when observations exist; and programmers do not yet have guidelines for what to check for when building quantum programs. In this work, we present quantum program assertions based on statistical tests on classical observations. These allow programmers to decide if a quantum program state matches its expected value in one of classical, superposition, or entangled types of states. We extend an existing quantum programming language with the ability to specify quantum assertions, which our tool then checks in a quantum program simulator. We use these assertions to debug three benchmark quantum programs in factoring, search, and chemistry. We share what types of bugs are possible, and lay out a strategy for using quantum programming patterns to place assertions and prevent bugs.Comment: In The 46th Annual International Symposium on Computer Architecture (ISCA '19). arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1811.0544

Co-Tier Interference Reduction with Intelligent Scheduling in between LTE Femtocells

    Get PDF
In wireless networks, there is an ever-increasing demand for higher system throughput along with growing expectation for all users to be available to multimedia and Internet services. This is especially difficult to maintain at the cell-edge. To deal with the increasing demand of high speed data streaming and good quality voice traffic from mobile users at home, Femtocell Networks are deployed in homes that enables an indoor mobile user to achieve high speed downloading from the internet and make good quality voice calls. Femtocell networks suffer from the problem of interference. In this paper, a contribution to the existing research on the avoidance of interference in Femtocell networks is presented. The proposed methodology designs a resource allocation and reuse mechanism combined with allocating different resource blocks and interference-aware reuse. The presented results show that the proposed methodology can efficiently mitigate the Co-tier as well as Cross-tier interference in LTE based cellular networks and outperform the other mechanism. Strengthening Food Security through Technologies

    Get PDF
Securing food for 1.35 billion Indians and doubling the income of farmers by 2022, as stated by the government, are challenging tasks. India’s performance is below average in all three aspects of food security: availability, affordability, and quality and safety. It is an irony that the nation with largest cultivable land in the world (142 million ha) is facing food insecurity in spite of wide agro-ecoregions that enable cultivation of land even for three seasons in the large area. A large population (58%) depends on agriculture for its livelihood but the contribution of this sector to country's gross domestic product (GDP) has declined continuously since 1950 and was 15% in 2018. Although, the country has transformed itself from dependency on imports to selfsufficiency still the challenge is to remove the farm distress in the country. Current farmers’ field yields are lower by two to four folds than the achievable potential. In addition, the value realisation from the market is 30 to 35% only. This is because 59 % of the farmers in India do not get essential information from any agency. The major hurdles for achieving the goals set by the government are low investment in agricultural technologies, low adoption of key technologies by the farmers largely due to lack of knowledge/information, poor physical infrastructure, and involvement of large number of intermediaries in the value chains. Lack of awareness among farmers about good agricultural management practices is a key factor for stagnant productivity levels. The mind-set of all actors involved in agriculture needs to change so that they work collectively as a team instead of working independently in silos if the agrarian situation is to be transformed

Performance up gradation of static VAR compensator with thyristor binary switched capacitor and reactor using model reference adaptive controller

    Get PDF
There are various static var compensator configurations are available and listed in the literature. Their performances are evaluated based on their voltage support, dynamic response, losses, cost, and additional filter requirement, if any. In this paper, efforts are made to improve the dynamic performance parameter such as rise time, settling time, and peak overshoots. A new topology with an adaptive controller is presented, in which capacitor and reactor banks are divided in their binary values and connected in the shunt. Capacitor and reactor banks are operated by thyristorised switches. Both these banks are operated in closed-loop form as a cascade control. Amongst these, capacitor bank operates as coarse control, and reactor bank acts as fine control. For the performance enhancement, a model reference adaptive controller is used. The system identification toolbox is used to evaluate the mathematical model of the plant with Matlab. The model\u27s performance was analyzed deeply by the adaptive controller with different reference models such as critical, under, and overdamped. The performance parameters such as rise time, settling time, and peak overshoot in the form of reactive power swings, are evaluated and plotted for different adaptive gains using MIT rules
