    Pumped current and voltage for an adiabatic quantum pump

    We consider adiabatic pumping of electrons through a quantum dot. There are two ways to operate the pump: to create a dc current Iˉ{\bar I} or to create a dc voltage Vˉ{\bar V}. We demonstrate that, for very slow pumping, Iˉ{\bar I} and Vˉ{\bar V} are not simply related via the dc conductance GG as Iˉ=VˉG\bar I = \bar V G. For the case of a chaotic quantum dot, we consider the statistical distribution of VˉG−Iˉ{\bar V} G - {\bar I}. Results are presented for the limiting cases of a dot with single channel and with multichannel point contacts.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure

    Metallurgical bonding development of V–4Cr–4Ti alloy for the DIII-D radiative divertor program

    General Atomics (GA), in conjunction with the Department of Energy`s (DOE) DIII-D Program, is carrying out a plan to utilize a vanadium alloy in the DIII-D tokamak as part of the DIII-D Radiative Divertor (RD) upgrade. The V-4Cr-4Ti alloy has been selected in the U.S. as the leading candidate vanadium alloy for fusion applications. This alloy will be used for the divertor fabrication. Manufacturing development with the V-4Cr-4Ti alloy is a focus of the DIII-D RD Program. The RD structure, part of which will be fabricated from V-4Cr-4Ti alloy, will require many product forms and types of metal/metal bonded joints. Metallurgical bonding methods development on this vanadium alloy is therefore a key area of study by GA. Several solid state (non-fusion weld) and fusion weld joining methods are being investigated. To date, GA has been successful in producing ductile, high strength, vacuum leak tight joints by all of the methods under investigation. The solid state joining was accomplished in air, i.e., without the need for a vacuum or inert gas environment to prevent interstitial impurity contamination of the V-4Cr-4Ti alloy

    Parental height in relation to offspring coronary heart disease: examining transgenerational influences on health using the west of Scotland Midspan Family Study

    <b>Background </b>Adult height is known to be inversely related to coronary heart disease (CHD) risk. We sought to investigate transgenerational influence of parental height on offspring’s CHD risk. <p></p> <b>Methods </b>Parents took part in a cardiorespiratory disease survey in two Scottish towns during the 1970s, in which their physical stature was measured. In 1996, their offspring were invited to participate in a similar survey, which included an electrocardiogram recording and risk factor assessment.<p></p> <b>Results </b>A total of 2306 natural offspring aged 30–59 years from 1456 couples were subsequently flagged for notification of mortality and followed for CHD-related hospitalizations. Taller paternal and/or maternal height was associated with socio-economic advantage, heavier birthweight and increased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol in offspring. Increased height in fathers, but more strongly in mothers (risk ratio for 1 SD change in maternal height = 0.85; 95% confidence interval: 0.76 to 0.95), was associated with a lower risk of offspring CHD, adjusting for age, sex, other parental height and CHD risk factors. <p></p> <b>Conclusion </b>There is evidence of an association between taller parental, particularly maternal, height and lower offspring CHD risk. This may reflect an influence of early maternal growth on the intrauterine environment provided for her offspring

    Sphaeropsis sapinea (Fr.: Fr.) Dyko & B. Sutton and the anamorph of Botryosphaeria dothidea (Moug.) Ces. et De Not. are morphologically and ecologically similar fungi that cause serious canker and die-back diseases of Pinus and Eucalyptus spp. respectively in South Africa. In this article, the presence of both these fungi as symptomless endophytes In healthy pine and eucafypt tissue was demonstrated. Sphaeropsis sapinea was present in 50% of young, green P patula Schl. et Cham., and 90% of P. radiata D. Don cones. In contrast, it was virtually absent from the cones of P. elliottii Engalm. et Vasey and P. taeda L. Botryosphaeria dothidea, on the other hand, was found to be common in all the Eucalyptus spp. tested, occurring in 93% of E. smithii R. T. Bak., 77% of E. camaldulensis Dehnh., 63% of E. grandis Hill ex Maid, and 57% of E. nitens (Deane et Maid.) Maid, leaves tested.     Iron nutrition and possible lead toxicity: an appraisal of geophagy undertaken by pregnant women of UK Asian communities

    A cultural transfer of geophagy is evident in the UK, with soils imported from Bengal being deliberately consumed mainly by pregnant Asian women. Two samples purchased from ethnic shops were subjected to a 2-part acid–alkaline in vitro physiologically based extraction test (PBET) procedure, representing the stomach and small intestine of the human digestive system respectively, to determine the bioaccessibility of elements. Despite the low bioaccessibility of Fe, with the quantity of soil consumed one sample can provide 41–54% of this mineral nutrient required by a 15–18 year old female, with the other sample providing 90–119%. Significant amounts of Ca, Cu and Mn are also supplied to the consumer, whilst further research investigating the possible effects of Pb toxicity on the geophagist would seem to be justifie

    Delay times and reflection in chaotic cavities with absorption

    Absorption yields an additional exponential decay in open quantum systems which can be described by shifting the (scattering) energy E along the imaginary axis, E+i\hbar/2\tau_{a}. Using the random matrix approach, we calculate analytically the distribution of proper delay times (eigenvalues of the time-delay matrix) in chaotic systems with broken time-reversal symmetry that is valid for an arbitrary number of generally nonequivalent channels and an arbitrary absorption rate 1/\tau_{a}. The relation between the average delay time and the ``norm-leakage'' decay function is found. Fluctuations above the average at large values of delay times are strongly suppressed by absorption. The relation of the time-delay matrix to the reflection matrix S^{\dagger}S is established at arbitrary absorption that gives us the distribution of reflection eigenvalues.     The extremely red L dwarf ULAS J222711-004547-dominated by dust

    We report the discovery of a peculiar L dwarf from the United Kingdom Infrared Deep Sky Survey Large Area Survey, ULAS J222711-004547. The very red infrared photometry (MKO J-K = 2.79 +/- 0.06, WISEW1-W2 = 0.65 +/- 0.05) of ULAS J222711-004547 makes it one of the reddest brown dwarfs discovered so far. We obtained a moderate resolution spectrum of this target using the XSHOOTER spectrograph on the Very Large Telescope, and we classify it as L7pec, confirming its very red nature. Comparison to theoretical models suggests that the object could be a low-gravity L dwarf with a solar or higher than solar metallicity. Nonetheless, the match of such fits to the spectral energy distribution is rather poor, and this and other less red peculiar L dwarfs pose new challenges for the modelling of ultracool atmospheres, especially to the understanding of the effects of condensates and their sensitivity to gravity and metallicity. We determined the proper motion of ULAS J222711-004547 using the data available in the literature, and we find that its kinematics do not suggest membership of any of the known young associations. We show that applying a simple de-reddening curve to its spectrum allows it to resemble the spectra of the L7 spectroscopic standards without any spectral features that distinguish it as a low-metallicity or low-gravity dwarf. Given the negligible interstellar reddening of the field containing our target, we conclude that the reddening of the spectrum is mostly due to an excess of dust in the photosphere of the target. De-reddening the spectrum using extinction curves for different dust species gives surprisingly good results and suggests a characteristic grain size of similar to 0.5 mu m. We show that by increasing the optical depth, the same extinction curves allow the spectrum of ULAS J222711-004547 to resemble the spectra of unusually blue L dwarfs and even slightly metal-poor L dwarfs. Grains of similar size also yield very good fits when de-reddening other unusually red L dwarfs in the L5-L7.5 range. These results suggest that the diversity in near-infrared colours and spectra seen in late L dwarfs could be due to differences in the optical thickness of the dust cloud deck.Peer reviewe

    Reducing nonideal to ideal coupling in random matrix description of chaotic scattering: Application to the time-delay problem

    We write explicitly a transformation of the scattering phases reducing the problem of quantum chaotic scattering for systems with M statistically equivalent channels at nonideal coupling to that for ideal coupling. Unfolding the phases by their local density leads to universality of their local fluctuations for large M. A relation between the partial time delays and diagonal matrix elements of the Wigner-Smith matrix is revealed for ideal coupling. This helped us in deriving the joint probability distribution of partial time delays and the distribution of the Wigner time delay.Comment: 4 pages, revtex, no figures; published versio

    Wavefunction statistics in open chaotic billiards

    We study the statistical properties of wavefunctions in a chaotic billiard that is opened up to the outside world. Upon increasing the openings, the billiard wavefunctions cross over from real to complex. Each wavefunction is characterized by a phase rigidity, which is itself a fluctuating quantity. We calculate the probability distribution of the phase rigidity and discuss how phase rigidity fluctuations cause long-range correlations of intensity and current density. We also find that phase rigidities for wavefunctions with different incoming wave boundary conditions are statistically correlated.Comment: 4 pages, RevTeX; 1 figur
