Effects of an early rehabilitation program for adult cystic fibrosis patients during hospitalization: a randomized clinical trial
There is little information on pulmonary rehabilitation in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) with pulmonary exacerbation. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of an early rehabilitation program on lung function, muscle strength, inflammatory markers, and quality of life in adults with CF hospitalized for pulmonary exacerbation. In this randomized controlled trial, 19 patients were included in the intervention group and 15 in the control group. The intervention group underwent an early rehabilitation program for 14 days after admission. All patients underwent spirometry, one-repetition maximum tests (1RM), and the 6-min walk test, and answered the Revised Cystic Fibrosis Questionnaire (CFQ-R) for quality of life and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire. Serum levels of interleukin and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) were measured. In the intervention group, there were increases in 1RM biceps (P=0.009), triceps (P=0.005), shoulder abductors (P=0.002), shoulder flexors (P=0.004), hamstrings (P<0.001), and quadriceps values (P<0.001). In addition, there were improvements in CFQ-R-emotion (P=0.002), treatment burden (P=0.002), vitality (P=0.011), and physical scores (P=0.026), and a reduction in the Borg resting fatigue score (P=0.037). The interleukins levels did not change after the intervention. In adult CF patients with pulmonary exacerbation, early hospital rehabilitation had a significant impact on improving resting fatigue, muscle strength, and quality of life
Assessment of flatness and symmetry of megavoltage x-ray beam with an electronic portal imaging device (EPID)

The document attached has been archived with permission from the publisher. The input/output characteristics of the Wellhofer BIS 710 electronic portal imaging device (EPID) have been investigated to establish its efficacy for periodic quality assurance (QA) applications. Calibration curves have been determined for the energy fluence incident on the detector versus the pixel values. The effect of the charge coupled device (CCD) camera sampling time and beam parameters (such as beam field size, dose rate, photon energy) on the calibration have been investigated for a region of interest (ROI) around the central beam axis. The results demonstrate that the pixel output is a linear function of the incident exposure, as expected for a video-based electronic portal imaging system. The field size effects of the BIS 710 are similar to that of an ion chamber for smaller field sizes up to 10 x 10 cm2. However, for larger field sizes the pixel value increases more rapidly. Furthermore, the system is slightly sensitive to dose rate and is also energy dependent. The BIS 710 has been used in the current study to develop a QA procedure for measurements of flatness and symmetry of a linac x-ray beam. As a two-dimensional image of the radiation field is obtained from a single exposure of the BIS 710, a technique has been developed to calculate flatness and symmetry from a defined radiation area. The flatness and symmetry values obtained are different from those calculated conventionally from major axes only (inplane, crossplane). This demonstrates that the technique can pick up the "cold" and "hot" spots in the analysed area, providing thus more information about the radiation beam. When calibrated against the water tank measurements, the BIS 710 can be used as a secondary device to monitor the x-ray beam flatness and symmetry.G. Liu, T. van Doorn and E. Beza

The efficacy of density gradients for islet purification: A comparison of seven density gradients
Seven different density gradient-forming materials were compared as to their efficacy for rat islet purification. Continuous density gradients were used in order to determine the bouant densities of the different pancreatic tissue components. Hand-picked islets served as a control. A significant separation of large numbers of slets from the exocrine tissue band was only seen in the albumin, dextran-40, and metrizamide gradients. Pure islet preparations could not be obtained with any of the gradients studied as none of the gradients completely separated lymph nodes, vessels, and ducts from the islets. Gradients containing sucrose resulted in low islet yields. The islet yields obtained with the other gradients were in the same range as those obtained by hand-picking. Metrizamide gave significantly higher yields than the widely used Ficoll. Judged both in terms of numbers of islets and their in vitro function, the best results were obtained with metrizamide and dextran-4
