    Entangling identical bosons in optical tweezers via exchange interaction

    We first devise a scheme to perform a universal entangling gate via controlled collisions between pairs of atomic qubits trapped with optical tweezers. Second, we present a modification to this scheme to allow the preparation of atomic Bell pairs via selective excitation, suitable for quantum information processing applications that do not require universality. Both these schemes are enabled by the inherent symmetries of identical composite particles, as originally proposed by Hayes et al. Our scheme provides a technique for producing weighted graph states, entangled resources for quantum communication, and a promising approach to performing a "loophole free" Bell test in a single laboratory.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure

    The developmental pattern of homologous and heterologous tRNA methylation in rat brain differential effect of spermidine

    Using S -adenosyl- L -[Me- 14 C] methionine, rat cerebral cortex methyltransferase activity was determined during the early postnatal period in the absence of added Escherichia coli tRNA and in its presence. [Me- 14 C] tRNA was purified from both systems and its [Me- 14 C] base composition determined. The endogenous formation of [Me- 14 C] tRNA (homologous tRNA methylation) was totally abolished in the presence of 2.5 mM spermidine, whereas E. coli B tRNA methylation (heterologous methylation) was markedly stimulated. Only [Me- 14 C] 1-methyl guanine and [Me- 14 C] N 2 -methyl guanine were formed by homologous methylation, there being an inverse shift in their relative proportions with age. Heterologous tRNA methylation led, additionally, to the formation of [Me- 14 C] N 2 2 -dimethyl guanine, 5-methyl cytosine, 1-methyl adenine, 5-methyl uracil, 2-methyl adenine, and 1-methyl hypoxanthine. A comparison of heterologous tRNA methylation between the whole brain cortex (containing nerve and glial cells) and bulk-isolated nerve cell bodies revealed markedly lower proportions of [Me- 14 C] N 2 -methyl and N 2 2 -dimethyl guanine and significantly higher proportions of [Me- 14 C] 1-methyl adenine in the neurons. The present findings suggest (1) that homologous tRNA methylation may provide developing brain cells with continuously changing populations of tRNA and (2) that neurons are enriched in adenine residue-specific tRNA methyltransferases that are highly sensitive to spermidine.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/45399/1/11064_2004_Article_BF00966229.pd

    Trends in Outcomes for Neonates Born Very Preterm and Very Low Birth Weight in 11 High-Income Countries

    Objective To evaluate outcome trends of neonates born very preterm in 11 high-income countries participating in the International Network for Evaluating Outcomes of neonates. Study design In a retrospective cohort study, we included 154 233 neonates admitted to 529 neonatal units between January 1, 2007, and December 31, 2015, at 24(0/7) to 31(6/7) weeks of gestational age and birth weight <1500 g. Composite outcomes were in-hospital mortality or any of severe neurologic injury, treated retinopathy of prematurity, and bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD); and same composite outcome excluding BPD. Secondary outcomes were mortality and individual morbidities. For each country, annual outcome trends and adjusted relative risks comparing epoch 2 (2012-2015) to epoch 1 (2007-2011) were analyzed. Results For composite outcome including BPD, the trend decreased in Canada and Israel but increased in Australia and New Zealand, Japan, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. For composite outcome excluding BPD, the trend decreased in all countries except Spain, Sweden, Tuscany, and the United Kingdom. The risk of composite outcome was lower in epoch 2 than epoch 1 in Canada (adjusted relative risks 0.78; 95% CI 0.74-0.82) only. The risk of composite outcome excluding BPD was significantly lower in epoch 2 compared with epoch 1 in Australia and New Zealand, Canada, Finland, Japan, and Switzerland. Mortality rates reduced in most countries in epoch 2. BPD rates increased significantly in all countries except Canada, Israel, Finland, and Tuscany.     Smoothing factor, order of prolongation and actual multigrid convergence

    We consider the Fourier analysis of multigrid methods (of Galerkin type) for symmetric positive definite and semi-positive definite linear systems arising from the discretization of scalar partial differential equations (PDEs). We relate the so-called smoothing factor to the actual two-grid convergence rate and also to the convergence rate of the V-cycle multigrid. We derive a two-sided bound that defines an interval containing both the two-grid and V-cycle convergence rate. This interval is narrow and away from 1 when both the smoothing factor and an additional parameter are small enough. Besides the smoothing factor, the convergence mainly depends on the angle between the range of the prolongation and the eigenvectors of the system matrix associated with small eigenvalues. Nice V-cycle convergence is guaranteed if the tangent of this angle has an upper bound proportional to the eigenvalue, whereas nice two-grid convergence requires a bound proportional to the square root of the eigenvalue. We also discuss the well-known rule which relates the order of the prolongation to that of the differential operator associated to the problem. We first define a frequency based order which in most cases amounts to the so-called high frequency order as defined in Hemker (J Comput Appl Math 32:423-429, 1990). We give a firmer basis to the related order rule by showing that, together with the requirement of having the smoothing factor away from one, it provides necessary and sufficient conditions for having the two-grid convergence rate away from 1. A stronger condition is further shown to be sufficient for optimal convergence with the V-cycle. The presented results apply to rigorous Fourier analysis for regular discrete PDEs, and also to local Fourier analysis via the discussion of semi-positive systems as may arise from the discretization of PDEs with periodic boundary conditions. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.SCOPUS: ar.jinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe
