An Assessment of Economic Losses due to Avian Flu in Manipur State
The impact of 2007 outbreak of avian flu in the state of Manipur has been reported. The loss due to the disease has been found to be 14 per cent of the total value of livestock outputs in the entire state. More than 3 lakh birds were culled and 24 tonnes of poultry feed was destroyed post-flu. It has been found that the more affected were the producers and the input industry than traders and retailers. In dealing with such eventualities, compensation should be adequate and timely so as to ensure better compliance for effective control and stamping out of the disease. The study has suggested that the compensation rates may be fixed as per the prevailing economic condition of less-developed states like in the North-Eastern region, taking into consideration flock size, family size of farmers, proportion of income from poultry to total family income, level of nutritional security achieved from family poultry and border status of the state.Livestock Production/Industries,
Domestic fish marketing in India - changing structure, conduct, performance and policies
This study has been conducted in all the major coastal states and some selected inland states to understand the domestic marketing of fish in India. The total marketing costs of auctioneer, wholesaler, retailer, vendor, marine fishermen cooperative society and contractor/freshwater fishermen cooperative society have been found to be Re 0.98, Rs 8.89, Rs 6.61, Rs 4.50, Rs 6.00 and Rs 3.51, respectively. The marketing efficiencies for Indian major carps (IMC), sardine and seer fish have been found to vary from 34 per cent to 74 per cent, depending on the length of market channel. The marketing efficiency has been found more in the case of marine species than freshwater species, since the latter travel longer distances from the point of production to consumption centre, passing many intermediaries as compared to the former. The fisherman’s share in consumer’s rupee has shown variations across species, marketing channels and markets. The infrastructure facilities at most of the surveyed landing centres, fishing harbours and wholesale and retail markets have been found grossly inadequate and poorly maintained. The study has highlighted the need for formulating a uniform market policy for fishes for easy operation and regulation so that the country’s fish production is efficiently managed and delivered to the consuming population, ensuring at the same time remunerative prices to the fishers.Marketing,
Formation of polycrystalline SnS layers by a two-step process
Thin films of SnS have been produced by a novel two-stage process. This involved the deposition of thin films of Sn onto glass substrates using d.c. magnetron sputtering followed by conversion of the metallic layers into the compound by annealing in the presence of elemental sulfur. All the layers synthesised were found to be polycrystalline, the grain size and crystallinity of the layers increasing with increasing annealing temperature. The precursor layers sulfurised at temperatures 350°C, were found to be non-stoichiometric and X-ray diffraction data indicated the presence of a range of binary phases other than SnS. The best SnS layers were synthesised for annealing temperatures between 300 and 350°C. These layers were found to be stoichiomentric with a strong {111} preferred orientation. The stoichiometric SnS layers had resistivities of 1.5×102 ?cm and Arrhenius plots of the resistivity gave an activation energy of 0.65 eV. The optical energy band gap of the layers was 1.35 eV. These p-type layers could find application as absorber layers in thin film solar cells
Extended States in a One-dimensional Generalized Dimer Model
The transmission coefficient for a one dimensional system is given in terms
of Chebyshev polynomials using the tight-binding model. This result is applied
to a system composed of two impurities located between sites of a host
lattice. It is found that the system has extended states for several values of
the energy. Analytical expressions are given for the impurity site energy in
terms of the electron's energy. The number of resonant states grows like the
number of host sites between the impurities. This property makes the system
interesting since it is a simple task to design a configuration with resonant
energy very close to the Fermi level .Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Quark Hadron Phase Transition and Hybrid Stars
We investigate the properties of hybrid stars consisting of quark matter in
the core and hadron matter in outer region. The hadronic and quark matter
equations of state are calculated by using nonlinear Walecka model and chiral
colour dielectric (CCD) model respectively. We find that the phase transition
from hadron to quark matter is possible in a narrow range of the parameters of
nonlinear Walecka and CCD models. The transition is strong or weak first order
depending on the parameters used. The EOS thus obtained, is used to study the
properties of hybrid stars. We find that the calculated hybrid star properties

Delocalization in harmonic chains with long-range correlated random masses
We study the nature of collective excitations in harmonic chains with masses
exhibiting long-range correlated disorder with power spectrum proportional to
, where is the wave-vector of the modulations on the random
masses landscape. Using a transfer matrix method and exact diagonalization, we
compute the localization length and participation ratio of eigenmodes within
the band of allowed energies. We find extended vibrational modes in the
low-energy region for . In order to study the time evolution of an
initially localized energy input, we calculate the second moment of
the energy spatial distribution. We show that , besides being dependent
of the specific initial excitation and exhibiting an anomalous diffusion for
weakly correlated disorder, assumes a ballistic spread in the regime

Theory of nonlinear Landau-Zener tunneling
A nonlinear Landau-Zener model was proposed recently to describe, among a
number of applications, the nonadiabatic transition of a Bose-Einstein
condensate between Bloch bands. Numerical analysis revealed a striking
phenomenon that tunneling occurs even in the adiabatic limit as the nonlinear
parameter is above a critical value equal to the gap of avoided
crossing of the two levels. In this paper, we present analytical results that
give quantitative account of the breakdown of adiabaticity by mapping this
quantum nonlinear model into a classical Josephson Hamiltonian. In the critical
region, we find a power-law scaling of the nonadiabatic transition probability
as a function of and , the crossing rate of the energy levels.
In the subcritical regime, the transition probability still follows an
exponential law but with the exponent changed by the nonlinear effect. For
, we find a near unit probability for the transition between the
adiabatic levels for all values of the crossing rate.Comment: 9 figure
Self-trapping transition for nonlinear impurities embedded in a Cayley tree
The self-trapping transition due to a single and a dimer nonlinear impurity
embedded in a Cayley tree is studied. In particular, the effect of a perfectly
nonlinear Cayley tree is considered. A sharp self-trapping transition is
observed in each case. It is also observed that the transition is much sharper
compared to the case of one-dimensional lattices. For each system, the critical
values of for the self-trapping transitions are found to obey a
power-law behavior as a function of the connectivity of the Cayley tree.Comment: 6 pages, 7 fig
Multi-layered Ruthenium-modified Bond Coats for Thermal Barrier Coatings
Diffusional approaches for fabrication of multi-layered Ru-modified bond coats for thermal
barrier coatings have been developed via low activity chemical vapor deposition and high activity
pack aluminization. Both processes yield bond coats comprising two distinct B2 layers, based on
NiAl and RuAl, however, the position of these layers relative to the bond coat surface is reversed
when switching processes. The structural evolution of each coating at various stages of the
fabrication process has been and subsequent cyclic oxidation is presented, and the relevant
interdiffusion and phase equilibria issues in are discussed. Evaluation of the oxidation behavior of
these Ru-modified bond coat structures reveals that each B2 interlayer arrangement leads to the
formation of α-Al 2 O 3 TGO at 1100°C, but the durability of the TGO is somewhat different and in
need of further improvement in both cases
Stars in five dimensional Kaluza Klein gravity
In the five dimensional Kaluza Klein (KK) theory there is a well known class
of static and electromagnetic--free KK--equations characterized by a naked
singularity behavior, namely the Generalized Schwarzschild solution (GSS). We
present here a set of interior solutions of five dimensional KK--equations.
These equations have been numerically integrated to match the GSS in the
vacuum. The solutions are candidates to describe the possible interior perfect
fluid source of the exterior GSS metric and thus they can be models for stars
for static, neutral astrophysical objects in the ordinary (four dimensional)
