First demonstration of a Compton gamma imager based on silicon photomultipliers
We are developing a rugged and person-transportable Compton gamma imager for
use in security investigations of radioactive materials, and for radiological
incident remediation. The imager is composed of layers of scintillator with
light collection for the forward layers provided by silicon photomultipliers
and for the rear layer by photomultiplier tubes. As a first step, we have
developed a 1/5th-scale demonstration unit of the final imager. We present the
imaging performance of this demonstration unit for Cs-137 at angles of up to 30
degrees off-axis. Results are also presented for Sn-113 and Na-22. This
represents the first demonstration of the use of silicon photomultipliers as an
embedded component for light collection in a Compton gamma imager.Comment: 19 pages, 6 figure
Implicit measures of association in psychopathology research
Studies obtaining implicit measures of associations in Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed., Text Revision; American Psychiatric Association, 2000) Axis I psychopathology are organized into three categories: (a) studies comparing groups having a disorder with controls, (b) experimental validity studies, and (c) incremental and predictive validity studies. In the first category, implicit measures of disorder-relevant associations were consistent with explicit beliefs for some disorders (e.g., specific phobia), but for other disorders evidence was either mixed (e.g., panic disorder) or inconsistent with explicit beliefs (e.g., pain disorder). For substance use disorders and overeating, expected positive and unexpected negative associations with craved substances were found consistently. Contrary to expectation, implicit measures of self-esteem were consistently positive for patients with depressive disorder, social phobia, and body dysmorphic disorder. In the second category, short-term manipulations of disorder-relevant states generally affected implicit measures as expected. Therapeutic interventions affected implicit measures for one type of specific phobia, social phobia, and panic disorder, but not for alcohol use disorders or obesity. In the third category, implicit measures had predictive value for certain psychopathological behaviors, sometimes moderated by the availability of cognitive resources (e.g., for alcohol and food, only when cognitive resources were limited). The strengths of implicit measures include (a) converging evidence for dysfunctional beliefs regarding certain disorders and consistent new insights for other disorders and (b) prediction of some psychopathological behaviors that explicit measures cannot explain. Weaknesses include (a) that findings were inconsistent for some disorders, raising doubts about the validity of the measures, and (b) that understanding of the concept "implicit" is incomplete
Coronary vasodilatory action of elgodipine in coronary artery disease
The effects of intravenous elgodipine, a new second-generation dihydropyridine calcium antagonist, on hemodynamics and coronary artery diameter were investigated in 15 patients undergoing cardiac catheterization for suspected coronary artery disease. Despite a significant decrease in systemic blood pressure, elgodipine infused at a rate of 1.5 micrograms/kg/min over a period of 10 minutes did not affect heart rate and left ventricular end-diastolic pressure. The contractile responses during isovolumic contraction showed a slight but significant increase in maximum velocity (56 +/- 10 to 60 +/- 10 seconds-1; p less than 0.005), whereas the time constant of early relaxation was shortened from 49 +/- 11 to 44 +/- 9 ms (p less than 0.05). Coronary sinus and great cardiac vein flow increased significantly by 15 and 26%, respectively. As mean aortic pressure decreased, a significant decrease in coronary sinus (-27%) and great cardiac vein (-28%) resistance was observed, while the calculated myocardial oxygen consumption remained unchanged. In all, 69 coronary segments (including 13 stenotic segments) were analyzed quantitatively using computer-assisted quantitative coronary angiography. A significant increase in mean coronary artery diameter (2.27 +/- 0.53 to 2.48 +/- 0.53 mm; p less than 0.000001), as well as in obstruction diameter, (1.08 +/- 0.29 to 1.36 +/- 0.32 mm; p less than 0.02), was observed. The results demonstrate that elgodipine, in the route and dose described, induces significant vasodilatation of both coronary resistance and epicardial conductance vessels, without adverse effects on heart rate, myocardial oxygen demand and contractile indexes
A geospatial framework to support integrated biogeochemical modelling in the United Kingdom
Anthropogenic impacts on the aquatic environment, especially in the context of nutrients, provide a major challenge for water resource management. The heterogeneous nature of policy relevant management units (e.g. catchments), in terms of environmental controls on nutrient source and transport, leads to the need for holistic management. However, current strategies are limited by current understanding and knowledge that is transferable between spatial scales and landscape typologies. This study presents a spatially-explicit framework to support the modelling of nutrients from land to water, encompassing environmental and spatial complexities. The framework recognises nine homogeneous landscape units, distinct in terms of sensitivity of nutrient losses to waterbodies. The functionality of the framework is demonstrated by supporting an exemplar nutrient model, applied within the Environmental Virtual Observatory pilot (EVOp) cloud cyber-infrastructure. We demonstrate scope for the use of the framework as a management decision support tool and for further development of integrated biogeochemical modelling
Liver fluke in beef cattle – impact on production efficiency and associated greenhouse gas emissions estimated using causal inference methods
We aimed to estimate 1) the marginal effect of liver fluke (Fasciola hepatica) infection on productivity of Scottish beef cattle, and 2) the associated greenhouse gas emissions intensity (GHG EI). Data comprised 240,065 abattoir records from NE Scotland from 2014 to 2017, including the presence or absence of lesions typical of liver fluke in the liver at the time of slaughter, from which we inferred liver fluke infection status. The retrospective analysis of abattoir records to estimate marginal effects of an exposure is complicated by the multi-dimensional, clustered nature of the datasets, which result in confounding of potential causal factors with the exposure. Causal inference methods are required to identify and correct for variation in background exposure. We constructed directed acyclic graphs (DAGs) of observed variables, including the potential confounders, breed, sex, breeder, finisher, season of birth and year of birth. We then applied inverse probability weighting (IPW) to adjust for variation among exposure risk and applied a doubly robust generalized linear model (DRGLM) to the weighted observations to estimate the marginal effect of fluke on the growth rate of animals and total days from birth until slaughter. We compared these estimates with the results of linear mixed effects (LME) models with the same variables, treating breeder and producer as random effects. To estimate GHG EI, we applied IPCC tier-2 type GHG calculations to the marginal effects estimated from IPW with DRGLM. The IPW with DRGLM model estimated that animals with active fluke lesions (adult fluke seen on postmortem inspection) gained 17 (95 % CI 12–22) g/d less saleable beef than animals with no lesions and no visible fluke. Animals with active fluke lesions were 11 (95 % CI 6.5–15) d older at slaughter weight than animals with no lesions. Animals with historic lesions in which there was scarring of the liver but in which no adult fluke were seen showed a wide variation in effect estimates, consistent with some misclassification. The effect estimates from LME models suggested slightly lower effects of fluke on growth rate and days to slaughter but with overlapping 95 % confidence intervals. Calculation of the associated GHG emissions suggest the EI of meat from a herd with no fluke is approximately 1.5 % lower than the same herd with fluke. Sustainably controlling liver fluke would have additional production benefits not included in this estimate and could therefore have a much greater impact on GHG EI in practice than demonstrated here
Acute and long-term outcome of directional coronary atherectomy for stable and unstable angina
The clinical efficacy and safety of directional coronary atherectomy for the treatment of stable and unstable angina were assessed in 82 patients with stable and 68 patients with unstable angina. Therefore, clinical and angiographic follow-up was obtained in a prospectively collected consecutive series of 150 atherectomy procedures. Restenosis was assessed clinically and by quantitative angiography. The overall clinical success rate of atherectomy for patients with unstable and stable angina was 88% and 91%, respectively. No significant differences were found for in-hospital event rates between the unstable and stable angina groups: death (1.5% vs 0%), myocardial infarction (10% vs 6%), and emergency bypass operation (3% vs 2%). These clinical events were related to the occurrence of abrupt occlusions (8.8% in patients with stable and 6.1% in those with unstable angina; p = NS). Clinical follow-up was achieved in 100% of the patients with stable and unstable angina at a mean interval of 923 and 903 days, respectively. Two-year survival rates were 96% and 97% in the populations with unstable and stable angina, respectively. There were no significant differences with respect to bypass surgery and angioplasty, but event-free survival at 2 years was significantly lower in the unstable (54%) than the stable (69%) angina group. Quantitative coronary angiography did not detect any difference in luminal renarrowing during the 6-month angiographic follow-up period. Although directional coronary atherectomy can be performed effectively in patients with unstable and stable angina, the long-term clinical outcome was less favorable in the unstable angina group.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS
