Thermodynamic Comparison and the Ideal Glass Transition of A Monatomic Systems Modeled as an Antiferromagnetic Ising Model on Husimi and Cubic Recursive Lattices of the Same Coordination Number

Two kinds of recursive lattices with the same coordination number but different unit cells (2-D square and 3-D cube) are constructed and the antiferromagnetic Ising model is solved exactly on them to study the stable and metastable states. The Ising model with multi-particle interactions is designed to represent a monatomic system or an alloy. Two solutions of the model exhibit the crystallization of liquid, and the ideal glass transition of supercooled liquid respectively. Based on the solutions, the thermodynamics on both lattices was examined. In particular, the free energy, energy, and entropy of the ideal glass, supercooled liquid, crystal, and liquid state of the model on each lattice were calculated and compared with each other. Interactions between particles farther away than the nearest neighbor distance are taken into consideration. The two lattices show comparable properties on the transition temperatures and the thermodynamic behaviors, which proves that both of them are practical to describe the regular 3-D case, while the different effects of the unit types are still obvious.Comment: 27 pages, 13 figure

Experimental preparation of Werner state via spontaneous parametric down-conversion

We present an experiment of preparing Werner state via spontaneous parametric down-conversion and controlled decoherence of photons in this paper. In this experiment two independent BBO (beta-barium borate) crystals are used to produce down-conversion light beams, which are mixed to prepare Werner state.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures and 2 table

Traditional Chinese Medicine for Hashimoto's Thyroiditis: Focus on Selenium and Antioxidant Phytochemicals.

    Get PDF
Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) is not only the most frequent autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD), but it also has a significant impact on patients' health-related quality of life (HRQoL), and it has been variably associated with differentiated thyroid carcinoma. Even though its pathogenesis is still incompletely understood, oxidative stress is believed to play an important role. Hypothyroidism related to later stages of HT can be treated with levothyroxine substitution therapy; various approaches such as selenium supplementation and iodine-restricted diets have been proposed as disease-modifying treatments for earlier stages, and even thyroidectomy has been suggested for refractory cases of painful HT. Nevertheless, many patients still report suboptimal HRQoL, highlighting an unmet medical need in this area. The concepts and approaches of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in treating HT are not broadly known in the West. Here, we provide an overview of TCM for HT, including combinations of TCM with selenium. We encompass evidence from clinical trials and other studies related to complex TCM prescriptions, single herbs used in TCM, and phytochemicals; wherever possible, we delineate the probable underlying molecular mechanisms. The findings show that the main active components of TCM for HT have commonly known or presumed antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, which may account for their potential utility in HT. Further exploring the practices of TCM for HT and combining them with evidence- and mechanism-based approaches according to Western standards may help to identify new strategies to alter the clinical course of the disease and/or to treat patients' symptoms better and improve their HRQoL

Reducing the communication complexity with quantum entanglement

We propose a probabilistic two-party communication complexity scenario with a prior nonmaximally entangled state, which results in less communication than that is required with only classical random correlations. A simple all-optical implementation of this protocol is presented and demonstrates our conclusion.Comment: 4 Pages, 2 Figure

M-theory Supertubes with Three and Four Charges

Using the covariant M5-brane action, we construct configurations corresponding to supertubes with three and four charges. We derive the BPS equations and study the full structure of the solutions. In particular, we find new solutions involving arbitrariness in field strengths.Comment: 24 pages, references added and typos correcte

Hybrid photonic crystal light-emitting diode renders 123% color conversion effective quantum yield

    No full text
Colloidal quantum dots (QDs) have emerged as promising color conversion light emitters for solid-state lighting applications [Nat. Photonics 7, 13 (2012) [CrossRef] due to their emission tunability and near-unity photoluminescence quantum yields. In the current commercial LEDs, QDs are dispersed into an encapsulation layer in a far-field architecture, where the majority of the light emitted by the LED remains trapped within the epitaxy due to total internal reflection, drastically reducing the out-coupling efficiency. In this paper, we demonstrate a photonic quasi-crystal hybrid LED geometry that allows QD emitters to be placed in close proximity to the multiple quantum wells (MQWs) of the active area. This architecture greatly improves the coupling between MQWs and QDs, simultaneously allowing for a non-radiative resonant energy transfer between the MQWs and the QDs and near-field radiative coupling of trapped (guided) modes in the LED to the emitters. In this configuration, we demonstrate record-breaking effective quantum yields reaching 123% for single-color conversion LEDs and 110% for white light-emitting devices

Edge states and topological orders in the spin liquid phases of star lattice

A group of novel materials can be mapped to the star lattice, which exhibits some novel physical properties. We give the bulk-edge correspondence theory of the star lattice and study the edge states and their topological orders in different spin liquid phases. The bulk and edge-state energy structures and Chern number depend on the spin liquid phases and hopping parameters because the local spontaneous magnetic flux in the spin liquid phase breaks the time reversal and space inversion symmetries. We give the characteristics of bulk and edge energy structures and their corresponding Chern numbers in the uniform, nematic and chiral spin liquids. In particular, we obtain analytically the phase diagram of the topological orders for the chiral spin liquid states SL[\phi,\phi,-2\phi], where \phi is the magnetic flux in two triangles and a dodecagon in the unit cell. Moreover, we find the topological invariance for the spin liquid phases, SL[\phi_{1},\phi_{2},-(\phi_{1}+\phi_{2})] and SL[\phi_{2},\phi_{1},-(\phi_{1}+\phi_{2})]. The results reveal the relationship between the energy-band and edge-state structures and their topological orders of the star lattice.Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures, 1 tabl

Supersymmetric CP Violation in BXsl+lB \to X_s l^+ l^- in Minimal Supergravity Model

Direct CP asymmetries and the CP violating normal polarization of lepton in inclusive decay B \to X_s l^+ l^- are investigated in minimal supergravity model with CP violating phases. The contributions coming from exchanging neutral Higgs bosons are included. It is shown that the direct CP violation in branching ratio, A_{CP}^1, is of {\cal{O}}(10^{-3}) for l=e, \mu, \tau. The CP violating normal polarization for l=\mu can reach 0.5 percent when tan\beta is large (say, 36). For l=\tau and in the case of large \tan\beta, the direct CP violation in backward-forward asymmetry, A_{CP}^2, can reach one percent, the normal polarization of \tau can be as large as a few percent, and both are sensitive to the two CP violating phases, \phi_\mu and \phi_{A_0}, and consequently it could be possible to observe them (in particular, the normal polarization of \tau) in the future B factories.Comment: 14 pages, latex, 5 figure

Dark solitons in ferromagnetic chains with first- and second-neighbor interactions

We study the ferromagnetic spin chain with both first- and second-neighbor interactions. We obtained the condition for the appearance and stability of bright and dark solitons for arbitrary wave number inside the Brillouin zone. The influence of the second-neighbor interaction and the anisotropy on the soliton properties is considered. The scattering of dark solitons from point defects in the discrete spin chain is investigated numerically.Comment: 7 pages,5 figure
