© 2005 IEEE. Reprinted, with permission.A comprehensive model has been developed to simulate the transient, coupled transport phenomena occurring during a gas metal arc welding process. This includes the arc plasma; melting of the electrode; droplet formation, detachment, transfer, and impingement onto the workpiece; and weld pool fluid flow and dynamics. The fluid flow and heat transfer in both the arc and the metal were simulated and coupled through the boundary conditions at the arc-metal interface at each time step. The detached droplet in the arc and the deformed weld pool surface were found to cause significant changes in the distributions of arc temperature and arc pressure, which are usually assumed to have Gaussian distributions at the workpiece surface. The comprehensive model could provide more realistic boundary conditions to calculate the heat transfer and fluid flow both in the plasma and the metal. The predicted arc plasma distribution, droplet flight trajectory, droplet acceleration and final weld bead shape compared favorably with the published experimental results. This paper was to present the heat transfer and fluid flow in the arc plasma

Decoherence by a nonlinear environment: canonical vs. microcanonical case

    Get PDF
We compare decoherence induced in a simple quantum system (qubit) for two different initial states of the environment: canonical (fixed temperature) and microcanonical (fixed energy), for the general case of a fully interacting oscillator environment. We find that even a relatively compact oscillator bath (with the effective number of degrees of freedom of order 10), initially in a microcanonical state, will typically cause decoherence almost indistinguishable from that by a macroscopic, thermal environment, except possibly at singularities of the environment's specific heat (critical points). In the latter case, the precise magnitude of the difference between the canonical and microcanonical results depends on the critical behavior of the dissipative coefficient, characterizing the interaction of the qubit with the environment.Comment: 18 pages, revtex, 2 figures; minor textual changes, corrected typo in eq. Mixing state of atmospheric particles over the North China Plain

In this unique processing study, the mixing state of ambient submicron aerosol particles in terms of hygroscopicity and volatility was investigated with a Hygroscopicity Tandem Differential Mobility Analyzer and a Volatility Tandem Differential Mobility Analyzer. The measurements were conducted at a regional atmospheric observational site in the North China Plain (NCP) from 8 July to 9 August, 2013. Multimodal patterns were observed in the probability density functions of the hygroscopicity parameter κ and the shrink factor, indicating that ambient particles are mostly an external mixture of particles with different hygroscopicity and volatility. Linear relationships were found between the number fraction of hydrophobic and non-volatile populations, reflecting the dominance of soot in hydrophobic and non-volatile particles. The number fraction of non-volatile particles is lower than that of hydrophobic particles in most cases, indicating that a certain fraction of hydrophobic particles is volatile. Distinct diurnal patterns were found for the number fraction of the hydrophobic and non-volatile particles, with a higher level at nighttime and a lower level during the daytime. The result of air mass classification shows that aerosol particles in air masses coming from north with high moving speed have a high number fraction of hydrophobic/non-volatile population, and are more externally mixed. Only minor differences can be found between the measured aerosol properties for the rest of the air masses. With abundant precursor in the NCP, no matter where the air mass originates, as far as it stays in the NCP for a certain time, aerosol particles may get aged and mixed with newly emitted particles in a short time

The expression profiles of ADME genes in human cancers and their associations with clinical outcomes

ADME genes are a group of genes that are involved in drug absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion (ADME). The expression profiles of ADME genes within tumours is proposed to impact on cancer patient survival; however, this has not been systematically examined. In this study, our comprehensive analyses of pan-cancer datasets from the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) revealed di erential intratumoral expression profiles for ADME genes in 21 di erent cancer types. Most genes also showed high interindividual variability within cancer-specific patient cohorts. Using Kaplan-Meier plots and logrank tests, we showed that intratumoral expression levels of twenty of the thirty-two core ADME genes were associated with overall survival (OS) in these cancers. Of these genes, five showed significant association with unfavourable OS in three cancers, including SKCM (ABCC2, GSTP1), KIRC (CYP2D6, CYP2E1), PAAD (UGT2B7); sixteen showed significant associations with favourable OS in twelve cancers, including BLCA (UGT2B15), BRCA (CYP2D6), COAD (NAT1), HNSC (ABCB1), KIRC (ABCG2, CYP3A4, SLC22A2, SLC22A6), KIRP (SLC22A2), LIHC (CYP2C19, CYP2C8, CYP2C9, CYP3A5, SLC22A1),LUAD(SLC15A2), LUSC (UGT1A1), PAAD (ABCB1), SARC (ABCB1), and SKCM (ABCB1, DYPD). Overall, these data provide compelling evidence supporting ADME genes as prognostic biomarkers and potential therapeutic targets. We propose that intratumoral expression of ADME genes may impact cancer patient survival by multiple mechanisms that can include metabolizing/transporting anticancer drugs, activating anticancer drugs, and metabolizing/transporting a variety of endogenous molecules involved in metabolically fuelling cancer cells and/or controlling pro-growth signalling pathways.Dong Gui Hu, Peter I. Radiating black hole solutions in arbitrary dimensions

We prove a theorem that characterizes a large family of non-static solutions to Einstein equations in NN-dimensional space-time, representing, in general, spherically symmetric Type II fluid. It is shown that the best known Vaidya-based (radiating) black hole solutions to Einstein equations, in both four dimensions (4D) and higher dimensions (HD), are particular cases from this family. The spherically symmetric static black hole solutions for Type I fluid can also be retrieved. A brief discussion on the energy conditions, singularities and horizons is provided.Comment: RevTeX 9 pages, no figure

Mean flow and spiral defect chaos in Rayleigh-Benard convection

We describe a numerical procedure to construct a modified velocity field that does not have any mean flow. Using this procedure, we present two results. Firstly, we show that, in the absence of mean flow, spiral defect chaos collapses to a stationary pattern comprising textures of stripes with angular bends. The quenched patterns are characterized by mean wavenumbers that approach those uniquely selected by focus-type singularities, which, in the absence of mean flow, lie at the zig-zag instability boundary. The quenched patterns also have larger correlation lengths and are comprised of rolls with less curvature. Secondly, we describe how mean flow can contribute to the commonly observed phenomenon of rolls terminating perpendicularly into lateral walls. We show that, in the absence of mean flow, rolls begin to terminate into lateral walls at an oblique angle. This obliqueness increases with Rayleigh number.Comment: 14 pages, 19 figure

Linear Response, Validity of Semi-Classical Gravity, and the Stability of Flat Space

    Get PDF
A quantitative test for the validity of the semi-classical approximation in gravity is given. The criterion proposed is that solutions to the semi-classical Einstein equations should be stable to linearized perturbations, in the sense that no gauge invariant perturbation should become unbounded in time. A self-consistent linear response analysis of these perturbations, based upon an invariant effective action principle, necessarily involves metric fluctuations about the mean semi-classical geometry, and brings in the two-point correlation function of the quantum energy-momentum tensor in a natural way. This linear response equation contains no state dependent divergences and requires no new renormalization counterterms beyond those required in the leading order semi-classical approximation. The general linear response criterion is applied to the specific example of a scalar field with arbitrary mass and curvature coupling in the vacuum state of Minkowski spacetime. The spectral representation of the vacuum polarization function is computed in n dimensional Minkowski spacetime, and used to show that the flat space solution to the semi-classical Einstein equations for n=4 is stable to all perturbations on distance scales much larger than the Planck length.Comment: 22 pages: This is a significantly expanded version of gr-qc/0204083, with two additional sections and two new appendices giving a complete, explicit example of the semi-classical stability criterion proposed in the previous pape

Diagnosing the Clumpy Protoplanetary Disk of the UXor Type Young Star GM Cephei

    Get PDF
UX Orionis stars (UXors) are Herbig Ae/Be or T Tauri stars exhibiting sporadic occultation of stellar light by circumstellar dust. GM\,Cephei is such a UXor in the young (4\sim4~Myr) open cluster Trumpler\,37, showing prominent infrared excess, emission-line spectra, and flare activity. Our photometric monitoring (2008--2018) detects (1)~an \sim3.43~day period, likely arising from rotational modulation by surface starspots, (2)~sporadic brightening on time scales of days due to accretion, (3)~irregular minor flux drops due to circumstellar dust extinction, and (4)~major flux drops, each lasting for a couple of months with a recurrence time, though not exactly periodic, of about two years. The star experiences normal reddening by large grains, i.e., redder when dimmer, but exhibits an unusual "blueing" phenomenon in that the star turns blue near brightness minima. The maximum extinction during relatively short (lasting 50\leq 50~days) events, is proportional to the duration, a consequence of varying clump sizes. For longer events, the extinction is independent of duration, suggestive of a transverse string distribution of clumps. Polarization monitoring indicates an optical polarization varying 3%\sim3\%--8%\%, with the level anticorrelated with the slow brightness change. Temporal variation of the unpolarized and polarized light sets constraints on the size and orbital distance of the circumstellar clumps in the interplay with the young star and scattering envelope. These transiting clumps are edge-on manifestations of the ring- or spiral-like structures found recently in young stars with imaging in infrared of scattered light, or in submillimeter of thermalized dust emission.Comment: 20 pages, 9 figure

Martensitic transition and magnetoresistance in a Cu-Al-Mn shape memory alloy. Influence of aging

    Get PDF
We have studied the effect of ageing within the miscibility gap on the electric, magnetic and thermodynamic properties of a non-stoichiometric Heusler Cu-Al-Mn shape-memory alloy, which undergoes a martensitic transition from a bccbcc-based (β\beta-phase) towards a close-packed structure (MM-phase). Negative magnetoresistance which shows an almost linear dependence on the square of magnetization with different slopes in the MM- and β\beta-phases, was observed. This magnetoresistive effect has been associated with the existence of Mn-rich clusters with the Cu2_2AlMn-structure. The effect of an applied magnetic field on the martensitic transition has also been studied. The entropy change between the β\beta- and MM-phases shows negligible dependence on the magnetic field but it decreases significantly with annealing time within the miscibility gap. Such a decrease is due to the increasing amount of Cu2_2MnAl-rich domains that do not transform martensitically.Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in PR
