Projected increases in potential groundwater recharge and reduced evapotranspiration under future climate conditions in West Africa

The effects of changing climate and CO2 concentration (RCP8.5 between 2000 and 2100) on the West African monsoon are examined using the UPSCALE high-resolution (25âŻkm) global climate model ensembles for present and future climate, combined with the JULES land-surface model.
New hydrological insights
Future climate is predicted to have an enhanced summertime Saharan heat low, changing large-scale circulation, causing monsoon rainfall generally to increase. The monsoon progresses further inland and occurs later in the year. UPSCALE rainfall projections indicate that the eastern Sahel becomes wetter (+âŻ12.2%) but the western Sahel drier (ââŻ13.5%). Future evapotranspiration is reduced across most of West Africa due to the CO2 fertilisation effect causing lower transpiration. Potential groundwater recharge (soil drainage at the bottom of a 3âŻm deep soil column), is predicted to increase from 0% to 16% of rainfall under present climate, to 1â20% in the future, doubling from ~âŻ5% to ~âŻ10% in northern Ghana and the eastern Sahel. Potential recharge increases largely due to increased soil hydraulic conductivity, caused by higher soil moisture resulting from increased rainfall and reduced transpiration. Other factors have only a minor influence on the water balance and potential recharge, including rainfall intensity and land use type. A predicted increase in future potential groundwater recharge is significant as development of groundwater resources is seen as a key means to meet growing water demand in West Africa
ISO Spectroscopy of Young Stellar Objects
Observations of gas-phase and solid-state species toward
young stellar objects (YSOs) with the spectrometers
on board the Infrared Space Observatory
are reviewed. The excitation and abundances of
the atoms and molecules are sensitive to the changing
physical conditions during star-formation. In
the cold outer envelopes around YSOs, interstellar
ices contain a significant fraction of the heavy element
abundances, in particular oxygen. Different ice
phases can be distinguished, and evidence is found for
heating and segregation of the ices in more evolved
objects. The inner warm envelopes around YSOs are
probed through absorption and emission of gas-phase
molecules, including CO, CO_2, CH_4 and H_2O. An
overview of the wealth of observations on gas-phase
H_2O in star-forming regions is presented. Gas/solid
ratios are determined, which provide information on
the importance of gas-grain chemistry and high temperature
gas-phase reactions. The line ratios of molecules
such as H_2, CO and H_2O are powerful probes
to constrain the physical parameters of the gas. Together
with atomic and ionic lines such as [0 I]
63 ”m, [S I] 25 ”m and (Si II] 35 ”m, they can also
be used to distinguish between photon- and shock-heated
gas. Finally, spectroscopic data on circumstellar
disks around young stars are mentioned. The
results are discussed in the context of the physical
and chemical evolution of YSOs
<i>Zygomaticus major</i> muscle bony attachment site:a Thiel-embalmed cadaver study
Objective: Thezygomaticus major is a principal muscle of facial expression which is engaged when smiling. The zygomaticus major origin of the zygomatic bone is often discussed relevant to its importance in the field of plastic surgery. In addition, the zygomaticus major attachment site is also significant for forensic craniofacial reconstruction, separating the cheek into frontal and lateral surfaces. However, there are discrepancies amongst published articles regarding the precise origin of the zygomaticus major muscle. The aim of this study is to investigate more distinctive and palpable landmarks as the bony attachment of the zygomaticus major. Methods: This project is the first zygomaticus major dissection study utilising Thiel embalmed cadavers. Fifty-two facial dissections were investigated in 26 Thiel embalmed bodies, bequeathed to the Centre for Anatomy and Human Identification at The University of Dundee between 2013 and 2015. Results: This study found that the origin of zygomaticus major muscle was located at the superior margin of the temporal process on the lateral surface of zygomatic bone. Moreover, the zygomaticus major muscle overlapped the anterosuperior border of the masseter muscle. One out of 52 zygomaticus major muscles presented bifurcation. Conclusion: The origin site of zygomaticus major is considered important to increase resemblance in forensic craniofacial reconstruction. Furthermore, since zygomaticus major is a salient muscle involved in facial expression, the potential effects for cosmetic/surgical procedures are also relevant to the medical field and successful surgical outcomes. The current study provided easily palpable landmarks of zygomaticus major origin site which is beneficial for both surgeons and forensic craniofacial reconstruction practitioners. © 202
The price of rapid exit in venture capital-backed IPOs
This paper proposes an explanation for two empirical puzzles surrounding initial public offerings (IPOs). Firstly, it is well documented that IPO underpricing increases during âhot issueâ periods. Secondly, venture capital (VC) backed IPOs are less underpriced than non-venture capital backed IPOs during normal periods of activity, but the reverse is true during hot issue periods: VC backed IPOs are more underpriced than non-VC backed ones. This paper shows that when IPOs are driven by the initial investorâs desire to exit from an existing investment in order to finance a new venture, both the value of the new venture and the value of the existing firm to be sold in the IPO drive the investorâs choice of price and fraction of shares sold in the IPO. When this is the case, the availability of attractive new ventures increases equilibrium underpricing, which is what we observe during hot issue periods. Moreover, I show that underpricing is affected by the severity of the moral hazard problem between an investor and the firmâs manager. In the presence of a moral hazard problem the degree of equilibrium underpricing is more sensitive to changes in the value of the new venture. This can explain why venture capitalists, who often finance firms with more severe moral hazard problems, underprice IPOs less in normal periods, but underprice more strongly during hot issue periods. Come back Marshall, all is forgiven? : Complexity, evolution, mathematics and Marshallian exceptionalism
Marshall was the great synthesiser of neoclassical economics. Yet with his qualified assumption of self-interest, his emphasis on variation in economic evolution and his cautious attitude to the use of mathematics, Marshall differs fundamentally from other leading neoclassical contemporaries. Metaphors inspire more specific analogies and ontological assumptions, and Marshall used the guiding metaphor of Spencerian evolution. But unfortunately, the further development of a Marshallian evolutionary approach was undermined in part by theoretical problems within Spencer's theory. calibrations, the data taking procedures, the data analysis, and the
sensitivity of the experiment are discussed. The most stringent upper limit on
the branching ratio of \mu -> e + \gamma) < 1.2 x 10^{-11} was obtained
Academic language socialisation in high school writing conferences
This study examines multilingual high school writersâ individual talk with their teachers in two advanced English language development classes to observe how such talk shapes linguistically diverse adolescentsâ writing. Addressing adolescent writersâ language socialization through microethnographic discourse analysis, the author argues that teachersâ oral responses during writing conferences can either scaffold or deter studentsâ socialization into valued ways of using academic language for school writing. She suggests what forms of oral response provide scaffolding and what forms might limit multilingual adolescent learnersâ academic literacy. Constructive interactions engaged students in dialogue about their writing, and students included content or phrasing from the interaction in their texts. Unhelpful interactions failed to foster studentsâ language development in observable ways. Although teachers attempted to scaffold ideas and language, they often did not guide studentsâ discovery of appropriate forms or points. These interactions represent restrictive academic language socialization: while some students did create academic texts, they learned little about academic language use
Schools out : Adam Smith and pre-disciplinary international political economy
In this article, I argue that invocations of Adam Smith in international political economy (IPE) often reveal the influence therein of a disciplinary ontological disaggregation of economic and non-economic rationality, which I claim is obscured by the tendency to map its complex intellectual contours in terms of competing schools. I trace the origins of the disciplinary characterisation of Smith as the founder of IPE's liberal tradition to invocations of his thought by centrally important figures in the perceived Austrian, Chicago and German historical schools of economics, and reflect upon the significance to IPE of the reiteration of this portrayal by apparent members of its so-called American and British schools. I additionally contrast these interpretations to those put forward by scholars who seek to interpret IPE and Smith's contribution to it in pre-disciplinary terms, which I claim reflects a distinct ontology to that attributed to the British school of IPE with which their work is often associated. I therefore contend that reflection upon invocations of Smith's thought in IPE problematises the longstanding tendency to map its intellectual terrain in terms of competing schools, reveals that the disciplinary ontological consensus that informs this tendency impacts upon articulations of its core concerns and suggests that a pre-disciplinary approach offers an alternative lens through which such concerns might be more effectively framed
Search for the glueball candidates f0(1500) and fJ(1710) in gamma gamma collisions
Data taken with the ALEPH detector at LEP1 have been used to search for gamma
gamma production of the glueball candidates f0(1500) and fJ(1710) via their
decay to pi+pi-. No signal is observed and upper limits to the product of gamma
gamma width and pi+pi- branching ratio of the f0(1500) and the fJ(1710) have
been measured to be Gamma_(gamma gamma -> f0(1500)). BR(f0(1500)->pi+pi-) <
0.31 keV and Gamma_(gamma gamma -> fJ(1710)). BR(fJ(1710)->pi+pi-) < 0.55 keV
