Precision era of the kinetic Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect: simulations, analytical models and observations and the power to constrain reionization

The kinetic SZ effect, which is the dominant CMB source at arc-minute scales and ν217\nu \sim 217 Ghz, probes the ionized gas peculiar momentum up to the epoch of reionization and is a sensitive measure of the reionization history. We ran high resolution self-similar and Λ\LambdaCDM hydro simulations and built an analytical model to study this effect. Our model reproduces the Λ\LambdaCDM simulation results to several percent accuracy, passes various tests against self-similar simulations, and shows a wider range of applicability than previous analytical models. Our model in its continuous version is free of simulation limitations such as finite simulation box and finite resolution and allows an accurate prediction of the kinetic SZ power spectrum ClC_l. For the WMAP cosmology, we find l2Cl/(2π)0.91×1012[(1+zreion)/10]0.34(l/5000)0.230.015(zreion9)l^2C_l/(2\pi)\simeq 0.91 \times 10^{-12} [(1+z_{\rm reion})/10]^{0.34}(l/5000)^{0.23-0.015(z_{\rm reion}-9)} for the reionization redshift 6<zreion<206<z_{\rm reion}<20 and 3000<l<90003000<l<9000. The corresponding temperature fluctuation is several μ\muK at these ranges. The dependence of ClC_l on the reionization history allows an accurate measurement of the reionization epoch. For the Atacama cosmology telescope experiment, ClC_l can be measured with 1\sim 1% accuracy. ClC_l scales as (Ωbh)2σ846(\Omega_b h)^2 \sigma_8^{4\sim 6}. Given cosmological parameters, ACT would be able to constrain zreionz_{\rm reion} with several percent accuracy. Some multi-reionization scenarios degenerate in the primary CMB temperature and TE measurement can be distinguished with 10σ\sim 10 \sigma confidence.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures. Accepted by MNRAS. We corrected the primary CMB power spectrum we used. We added discussions about the effects of lensing and relativistic SZ correctio. We withdraw a claim about the patchy reionizatio

Gluon GPDs and Exclusive Photoproduction of a Quarkonium in Forward Region

Forward photoproduction of J/ψJ/\psi can be used to extract Generalized Parton Distributions(GPD's) of gluons. We analyze the process at twist-3 level and study relevant classifications of twist-3 gluon GPD's. At leading power or twist-2 level the produced J/ψJ/\psi is transversely polarized. We find that at twist-3 the produced J/ψJ/\psi is longitudinally polarized. Our study shows that in high energy limit the twist-3 amplitude is only suppressed by the inverse power of the heavy quark mass relatively to the twist-2 amplitude. This indicates that the power correction to the cross-section of unpolarized J/ψJ/\psi can have a sizeable effect. We have also derived the amplitude of the production of hch_c at twist-3, but the result contains end-point singularities. The production of other quarkonia has been briefly discussed.Comment: Discussions of results are adde

Human Arm simulation for interactive constrained environment design

During the conceptual and prototype design stage of an industrial product, it is crucial to take assembly/disassembly and maintenance operations in advance. A well-designed system should enable relatively easy access of operating manipulators in the constrained environment and reduce musculoskeletal disorder risks for those manual handling operations. Trajectory planning comes up as an important issue for those assembly and maintenance operations under a constrained environment, since it determines the accessibility and the other ergonomics issues, such as muscle effort and its related fatigue. In this paper, a customer-oriented interactive approach is proposed to partially solve ergonomic related issues encountered during the design stage under a constrained system for the operator's convenience. Based on a single objective optimization method, trajectory planning for different operators could be generated automatically. Meanwhile, a motion capture based method assists the operator to guide the trajectory planning interactively when either a local minimum is encountered within the single objective optimization or the operator prefers guiding the virtual human manually. Besides that, a physical engine is integrated into this approach to provide physically realistic simulation in real time manner, so that collision free path and related dynamic information could be computed to determine further muscle fatigue and accessibility of a product designComment: International Journal on Interactive Design and Manufacturing (IJIDeM) (2012) 1-12. arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1012.432

Communication Lower Bounds for Statistical Estimation Problems via a Distributed Data Processing Inequality

We study the tradeoff between the statistical error and communication cost of distributed statistical estimation problems in high dimensions. In the distributed sparse Gaussian mean estimation problem, each of the mm machines receives nn data points from a dd-dimensional Gaussian distribution with unknown mean θ\theta which is promised to be kk-sparse. The machines communicate by message passing and aim to estimate the mean θ\theta. We provide a tight (up to logarithmic factors) tradeoff between the estimation error and the number of bits communicated between the machines. This directly leads to a lower bound for the distributed \textit{sparse linear regression} problem: to achieve the statistical minimax error, the total communication is at least Ω(min{n,d}m)\Omega(\min\{n,d\}m), where nn is the number of observations that each machine receives and dd is the ambient dimension. These lower results improve upon [Sha14,SD'14] by allowing multi-round iterative communication model. We also give the first optimal simultaneous protocol in the dense case for mean estimation. As our main technique, we prove a \textit{distributed data processing inequality}, as a generalization of usual data processing inequalities, which might be of independent interest and useful for other problems.Comment: To appear at STOC 2016.
