A new polymorphic material? Structural degeneracy of ZrMn_2

Based on density functional calculations, we propose that ZrMn_2 is a polymorphic material. We predict that at low temperatures the cubic C15, and the hexagonal C14 and C36 structures of the Laves phase compound ZrMn_2 are nearly equally stable within 0.3 kJmol^{-1} or 30 K. This degeneracy occurs when the Mn atoms magnetize spontaneously in a ferromagnetic arrangement forming the states of lowest energy. From the temperature dependent free energies at T approx 160K we predict a transition from the most stable C15 to the C14 structure, which is the experimentally observed structure at elevated temperatures.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    Terahertz superlattice parametric oscillator

We report a GaAs/AlAs superlattice parametric oscillator. It was pumped by a microwave field (power few mW) and produced 3rd harmonic radiation (frequency near 300 GHz). The nonlinearity of the active superlattice was due to Bragg reflections of conduction electrons at the superlattice planes. A theory of the nonlinearity indicates that parametric oscillation should be possible up to frequencies above 10 THz. The active superlattice may be the object of further studies of predicted extraordinary nonlinearities for THz fields.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure

Resolving taxonomic uncertainty in vulnerable elasmobranchs : are the Madeira skate (Raja maderensis) and the thornback ray (Raja clavata) distinct species?

    Get PDF
Skates and rays constitute the most speciose group of chondrichthyan fishes, yet are characterised by remarkable levels of morphological and ecological conservatism. They can be challenging to identify, which makes monitoring species compositions for fisheries management purposes problematic. Owing to their slow growth and low fecundity, skates are vulnerable to exploitation and species exhibiting endemism or limited ranges are considered to be the most at risk. The Madeira skate Raja maderensis is endemic and classified as ‘Data Deficient’ by the IUCN, yet its taxonomic distinctiveness from the morphologically similar and more wide-ranging thornback ray Raja clavate is unresolved. This study evaluated the sequence divergence of both the variable control region and cytochrome oxidase I ‘DNA barcode’ gene of the mitochondrial genome to elucidate the genetic differentiation of specimens identified as R. maderensis and R. clavate collected across much of their geographic ranges. Genetic evidence was insufficient to support the different species designations. However regardless of putative species identification, individuals occupying waters around the Azores and North African Seamounts represent an evolutionarily significant unit worthy of special consideration for conservation management

Synthesis and crystal structure of RMgSi2 compounds (R= La, Ce, Pr, Nd), a particular example of linear intergrowth

A new series of rare earth compounds with stoichiometry RMgSi2 (R=La, Ce, Pr, Nd) is reported. The single crystal X-ray diffraction showed that CeMgSi2, which melts congruently at 1200 \ub0C, crystallizes in a new tetragonal structure type (I41/amd, tI32, a=4.2652(4) \uc5, c=36.830(4) \uc5, Z=8; wR2=0.042 (19 parameters, 393F02), R1=0.018 (297F0>4\u3c3F0). The crystal structure of CeMgSi2 can be formally built up by alternating along the z direction four CeMg2Si2-type CeMg2Si2 slabs with four AlB2-type CeSi2 slabs, one after the other. The structural model obtained from a CeMgSi2 single crystal has been confirmed for the La, Pr and Nd homologous compounds by means of Rietveld refinement. The trend of the unit-cell parameters, plotted versus the R3+ ionic radius, shows a linear behaviour, which strongly suggests a trivalent state for the Ce atoms. An analysis of the features of this new structure is reported, in comparison with the other known CeMg2Si2/AlB2-type linear intergrowth compounds
