Strain analysis of multiferroic BiFeO3-CoFe2O4 nanostructures by Raman scattering
We report a Raman scattering investigation of columnar BiFeO3-CoFe2O4
(BFO-CFO) epitaxial thin film nanostructures, where BFO pillars are embedded in
a CFO matrix. The feasibility of a strain analysis is illustrated through an
investigation of two nanostructures with different BFO-CFO ratios. We show that
the CFO matrix presents the same strain state in both nanostructures, while the
strain state of the BFO pillars depends on the BFO/CFO ratio with an increasing
tensile strain along the out-of-plane direction with decreasing BFO content.
Our results demonstrate that Raman scattering allows monitoring strain states
in complex 3D multiferroic pillar/matrix composites.Comment: revised version submitted to Appl. Phys. Let
Spherical Casimir energies and Dedekind sums

sections are shown to be given in terms of generalised Dedekind sums related to

Lower cost automotive piston from 2124/SiC/25p metal-matrix composite
Engineered materials have made a breakthrough in a quest for materials with a combination of custom-made properties to suit particular applications. One of such materials is 2124/SiC/25p, a high-quality aerospace grade aluminium alloy reinforced with ultrafine particles of silicon carbide, manufactured by a powder metallurgy route. This aluminium matrix composite offers a combination of greater fatigue strength at elevated temperatures, lower thermal expansion and greater wear resistance in comparison with conventionally used piston materials. The microscale particulate reinforcement also offers good formability and machinability. Despite the benefits, the higher manufacturing cost often limits their usage in high-volume industries such as automotive where such materials could significantly improve the engine performance. This paper presents mechanical and forging data for a lower cost processing route for metal matrix composites. Finite element modelling and analysis were used to examine forging of an automotive piston and die wear. This showed that selection of the forging route is important to maximise die life. Changes in biological productivity associated with Ningaloo Niño / Niña events in the southern subtropical Indian Ocean in recent decades
Using observations and long term simulations of an ocean-biogeochemical coupled model, we investigate the biological response in the southern subtropical Indian Ocean (SIO) associated with Ningaloo Niño and Niña events. Ningaloo events have large impact on sea surface temperature (SST) with positive SST anomalies (SSTA) seen off the west coast of Australia in southern SIO during Ningaloo Niño and negative anomalies during Niña events. Our results indicate that during the developing period of Ningaloo Niño, low chlorophyll anomaly appears near the southwest Australian coast concurrently with high SSTA and vice-versa during Niña, which alter the seasonal cycle of biological productivity. The difference in the spatiotemporal response of chlorophyll is due to the southward advection of Leeuwin current during these events. Increased frequency of Ningaloo Niño events associated with cold phase of Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) resulted in anomalous decrease in productivity during Austral summer in the SIO in the recent decades

Protozoa are one-celled animals found worldwide in most habitats. Most species are free living, but all higher animals are infected with one or more species of protozoa. Infections range from asymptomatic to life threatening, depending on the species and strain of the parasite and the resistance of the host. Present study deals with the free living protozoa inhabiting fresh water bodies. The factor which influence their distribution and population in a given water bodies temperature, light, pH, chemical composition, acidity, and amount of food present in water and degree of adaptability of the individual protozoa to various environmental changes. 
Mental illness, poverty and stigma in India: a case-control study
OBJECTIVE: To assess the effect of experienced stigma on depth of multidimensional poverty of persons with severe mental illness (PSMI) in Delhi, India, controlling for gender, age and caste.
DESIGN: Matching case (hospital)âcontrol (population) study.
SETTING: University Hospital (cases) and National Capital Region (controls), India.
PARTICIPANTS: A caseâcontrol study was conducted from November 2011 to June 2012. 647 cases diagnosed with schizophrenia or affective disorders were recruited and 647 individuals of same age, sex and location of residence were matched as controls at a ratio of 1:2:1. Individuals who refused consent or provided incomplete interview were excluded.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Higher risk of poverty due to stigma among PSMI.
RESULTS: 38.5% of PSMI compared with 22.2% of controls were found poor on six dimensions or more. The difference in multidimensional poverty index was 69% between groups with employment and income of the main contributors. Multidimensional poverty was strongly associated with stigma (OR 2.60, 95% CI 1.27 to 5.31), scheduled castes/scheduled tribes/other backward castes (2.39, 1.39 to 4.08), mental illness (2.07, 1.25 to 3.41) and female gender (1.87, 1.36 to 2.58). A significant interaction between stigma, mental illness and gender or caste indicates female PSMI or PSMI from âlower castesâ were more likely to be poor due to stigma than male controls (p<0.001) or controls from other castes (p<0.001).
CONCLUSIONS: Public stigma and multidimensional poverty linked to SMI are pervasive and intertwined. In particular for low caste and women, it is a strong predictor of poverty. Exclusion from employment linked to negative attitudes and lack of income are the highest contributors to multidimensional poverty, increasing the burden for the family. Mental health professionals need to be aware of and address these issues
