Dynamics of composite Haldane spin chains in IPA-CuCl3
Magnetic excitations in the quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnet IPA-CuCl3
are studied by cold neutron inelastic scattering. Strongly dispersive gap
excitations are observed. Contrary to previously proposed models, the system is
best described as an asymmetric quantum spin ladder. The observed spectrum is
interpreted in terms of ``composite'' Haldane spin chains. The key difference
from actual S=1 chains is a sharp cutoff of the single-magnon spectrum at a
certain critical wave vector.Comment: 4 pages 4 figure
Hot Core, Outflows and Magnetic Fields in W43-MM1 (G30.79 FIR 10)
We present submillimeter spectral line and dust continuum polarization
observations of a remarkable hot core and multiple outflows in the high-mass
star-forming region W43-MM1 (G30.79 FIR 10), obtained using the Submillimeter
Array (SMA). A temperature of 400 K is estimated for the hot-core using
CHCN (J=19-18) lines, with detections of 11 K-ladder components. The high
temperature and the mass estimates for the outflows indicate high-mass
star-formation. The continuum polarization pattern shows an ordered
distribution, and its orientation over the main outflow appears aligned to the
outflow. The derived magnetic field indicates slightly super-critical
conditions. While the magnetic and outflow energies are comparable, the B-field
orientation appears to have changed from parsec scales to 0.1 pc scales
during the core/star-formation process.Comment: accepted, ApJ Letter
Small atom diffusion and breakdown of the Stokes–Einstein relation in the supercooled liquid state of the Zr46.7Ti8.3Cu7.5Ni10Be27.5 alloy
Be diffusivity data in the bulk metallic glass forming alloy Zr46.7Ti8.3Cu7.5Ni10Be27.5 are reported for temperatures between 530 and 710 K, extending 85 K into the supercooled liquid state of the alloy. At the glass transition temperature Tg, a change in temperature dependence of the data is observed, and above Tg the diffusivity increases more quickly with temperature than below. The data in the supercooled liquid can be described by a modified Arrhenius expression based on a diffusion mechanism suggested earlier. The comparison with viscosity data in the supercooled liquid state of Zr46.7Ti8.3Cu7.5Ni10Be27.5 reveals a breakdown of the Stokes–Einstein relation, indicating a cooperative diffusion mechanism in the supercooled liquid state of Zr46.7Ti8.3Cu7.5Ni10Be27.5
Virtual photon fragmentation functions
We introduce operator definitions for virtual photon fragmentation functions,
which are needed for reliable calculations of Drell-Yan transverse momentum
() distributions when is much larger than the invariant mass . We
derive the evolution equations for these fragmentation functions. We calculate
the leading order evolution kernels for partons to fragment into a unpolarized
as well as a polarized virtual photon. We find that fragmentation functions to
a longitudinally polarized virtual photon are most important at small , and
the fragmentation functions to a transversely polarized virtual photon dominate
the large region. We discuss the implications of this finding to the
J/ mesons' polarization at large transverse momentum.Comment: Latex, 19 pages including 6 figures. An error in the first version

Single transverse-spin asymmetry for -meson production in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering
We study the single-transverse spin asymmetry for open charm production in
the semi-inclusive lepton-hadron deep inelastic scattering. We calculate the
asymmetry in terms of the QCD collinear factorization approach for mesons
at high enough , and find that the asymmetry is proportional to the
twist-three tri-gluon correlation function in the proton. With a simple model
for the tri-gluon correlation function, we estimate the asymmetry for both
COMPASS and eRHIC kinematics, and discuss the possibilities of extracting the
tri-gluon correlation function in these experiments.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figure
The fractional quantum Hall effect in infinite layer systems
Stacked two dimensional electron systems in transverse magnetic fields
exhibit three dimensional fractional quantum Hall phases. We analyze the
simplest such phases and find novel bulk properties, e.g., irrational braiding.
These phases host ``one and a half'' dimensional surface phases in which motion
in one direction is chiral. We offer a general analysis of conduction in the
latter by combining sum rule and renormalization group arguments, and find that
when interlayer tunneling is marginal or irrelevant they are chiral semi-metals
that conduct only at T > 0 or with disorder.Comment: RevTeX 3.0, 4p., 2 figs with epsf; reference to the detailed

Role of the nonperturbative input in QCD resummed Drell-Yan -distributions
We analyze the role of the nonperturbative input in the Collins, Soper, and
Sterman (CSS)'s -space QCD resummation formalism for Drell-Yan transverse
momentum () distributions, and investigate the predictive power of the CSS
formalism. We find that the predictive power of the CSS formalism has a strong
dependence on the collision energy in addition to its well-known
dependence, and the dependence improves the predictive power
at collider energies. We show that a reliable extrapolation from perturbatively
resummed -space distributions to the nonperturbative large region is
necessary to ensure the correct distributions. By adding power
corrections to the renormalization group equations in the CSS formalism, we
derive a new extrapolation formalism. We demonstrate that at collider energies,
the CSS resummation formalism plus our extrapolation has an excellent
predictive power for and production at all transverse momenta . We also show that the -space resummed distributions provide a good
description of Drell-Yan data at fixed target energies.Comment: Latex, 43 pages including 15 figures; typos were correcte
