Theoretical confirmation of Feynman's hypothesis on the creation of circular vortices in Bose-Einstein condensates: III
In two preceding papers (Infeld and Senatorski 2003 J. Phys.: Condens. Matter
15 5865, and Senatorski and Infeld 2004 J. Phys.: Condens. Matter 16 6589) the
authors confirmed Feynman's hypothesis on how circular vortices can be created
from oppositely polarized pairs of linear vortices (first paper), and then gave
examples of the creation of several different circular vortices from one linear
pair (second paper). Here in part III, we give two classes of examples of how
the vortices can interact. The first confirms the intuition that the
reconnection processes which join two interacting vortex lines into one,
practically do not occur. The second shows that new circular vortices can also
be created from pairs of oppositely polarized coaxial circular vortices. This
seems to contradict the results for such pairs given in Koplik and Levine 1996

Evolution of rarefaction pulses into vortex rings
The two-dimensional solitary waves of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation in the
Kadomtsev-Petviashvili limit are unstable with respect to three-dimensional
perturbations. We elucidate the stages in the evolution of such solutions
subject to perturbations perpendicular to the direction of motion. Depending on
the energy (momentum) and the wavelength of the perturbation different types of
three-dimensional solutions emerge. In particular, we present new periodic
solutions having very small energy and momentum per period. These solutions
also become unstable and this secondary instability leads to vortex ring
nucleation.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
Numerical study of oscillatory regimes in the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation
The aim of this paper is the accurate numerical study of the KP equation. In
particular we are concerned with the small dispersion limit of this model,
where no comprehensive analytical description exists so far. To this end we
first study a similar highly oscillatory regime for asymptotically small
solutions, which can be described via the Davey-Stewartson system. In a second
step we investigate numerically the small dispersion limit of the KP model in
the case of large amplitudes. Similarities and differences to the much better
studied Korteweg-de Vries situation are discussed as well as the dependence of
the limit on the additional transverse coordinate.Comment: 39 pages, 36 figures (high resolution figures at

W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań właściwości tribologicznych azotowanych
i nawęglanych stali konstrukcyjnych 18HGT i 20MnCr5.
powierzchniowych. Jednakże właściwości tarciowo-zużyciowe warstw
nawęglanych i azotowanych nie wykazały znaczących różnic. This work presents the research results of tribological properties of
constructional steels of grades 18HGT and 20MnCr5 after nitriding or
carburizing. A directly proportional dependence of their wear resistance
on the value of their surface pressures was stated. However, wear–friction
properties of carburized and nitrided layers did not show any significant
differences
The article presents results of investigations of wear resistance by friction, employing the “3 cylinder – cone” method, of selected structural steels subjected to given thermo-chemical treatment, i.e. nitriding, carburizing, and precipitation hardening after nitriding. The investigated steels were C45, 21NiCrMo2, 18HGT, and 41Cr4. These materials, after thermo-chemical treatment undergo metallurgical characteristics of diffusion layers formed on steel. It was observed that proportionality exists between their wear resistance and the value of surface unit loading. Moreover, the friction – wear properties of these layers exhibited certain differences, depending on their microstructure and chemistry.Artykuł ten przedstawia wyniki badań odporności na zużycie, wykorzystując metodę „3 wałeczki – stożek”, dotyczące wybranych stali konstrukcyjnych poddanych określonej obróbce cieplno-chemicznej, tj. azotowaniu, nawęglaniu i utwardzaniu wydzieleniowemu po azotowaniu. Badanymi stalami były: C45, 21NiCrMo2, 18HGT i 41Cr4.

Tribological properties of hybrid layers produced in combining the diffusion chromizing process and PVD treatment
W pracy omówiono wyniki badań dotyczących budowy i właściwości tribologicznych warstw hybrydowych typu CrC+CrN wytwarzanych na powierzchni stali X210Cr12 w procesach chromowania dyfuzyjnego, wykonywanego metodą proszkową, połączonych z obróbką PVD. Przeprowadzono porównanie warstw hybrydowych typu CrC+CrN z pojedynczymi warstwami węglikowymi typu CrC, wytwarzanymi na powierzchni stali, bez powłoki CrN. Właściwości tribologiczne (zużycie liniowe) otrzymanych warstw oceniano przy wykorzystaniu metody trzy wałeczki-stożek. Wykazano, że odporność na zużycie przez tarcie warstw hybrydowych typu CrC+CrN jest prawie dwa razy większa od odporności pojedynczych warstw węglikowych typu CrC.Tribological properties of the CrC+CrN type hybrid layers, produced on X210Cr12 steel in chromizing process by the pack powder method combined with arc evaporation PVD treatment, have been investigated. A comparison of the CrC+CrN type hybrid layers with the CrC single carbide layers, produced on steel surface without CrN coating, has been performed. Tribological properties of the layers were performed by means of taper-three rolls test. It has been proved that the resistance to abrasive wear of hybrid CrC+CrN type layers is almost two times higher than that for the single CrC carbide layers
Effect of Controlled Gas Nitriding on the Durability of the Barrels of Small Arms
Jedną z takich metod jest ulepszanie cieplne lufy, połączone w zamkniętym cyklu technologicznym z głębokim wymrażaniem, a następnie poddanie jej regulowanemu azotowaniu gazowemu. Omówiono wyniki badań procesów regulowanego azotowania gazowego konstrukcyjnej stali stopowej gatunku 38HMJ, używanej na części maszyn, narażone w eksploatacji na korozję, zużycie przez tarcie i zmęczenie oraz udary cieplne, przewidzianej do zastąpienia obecnie stosowanej stali lufowej 30HN2MFA. Procesy azotowania prowadzono w zakresie temperatury: 520-560°C i w czasie 4-6 h, w atmosferze NH3-N2 bądź NH3-NH3zdys z regulowaniem ich składu i potencjału azotowego w okresie nagrzewania i w temperaturze procesu. The project research - development, implemented in a consortium: Institute of Precision Mechanics (Warsaw, Poland), Military University of Technology (Warsaw, Poland) and Small Arms Factory (Radom, Poland), studies were undertaken of the possibility and desirability of replacing the electrolytic chromium plating technology used in the production of small arms barrels of 5.56 mm. So far, the barrel of small arms calibre 5.56 mm, and the like are mostly produced from low-alloy structural steels, similar to that used for the purpose of domestic steel 30HN2MFA. The aim was to search for new technologies such as multiplex thermo-chemical properties, combined with the deep freeze, which can ensure the sustainability of the final gun with less onerous technologies for the environment. One such method is the quenching barrel, connected in a closed technological cycle of the deep freeze and then subjected to nitriding gas industries regulated. The results of investigations of processes controlled gas nitriding grade alloy steel construction 38HMJ, used for machine parts, exposed in operation to corrosion, friction wear and fatigue and thermal shock, provided to replace the currently used barrel steel 30HN2MFA. Nitriding process was carried out in the temperature range 520-560°C and at times 4-6 h, in an atmosphere of N2 or NH3-NH3zdys with the settlement of their composition and potential for nitrogen during the heating process and temperature. Provides examples and discusses the impact of process solutions for the production of nitrided layers on 38HMJ iron nitride layer at the surface, designed for corrosive and tribological exposure and limited iron nitride layer at the surface, intended for exposures of fatigues. For both types of nitrided layers determined resistance to frictional wear and impact resistance. Phenomena, brittleness and cracks bombardment nitrided layers after 10 000 rounds
Corticosteroid-free regimens - Tacrolimus monotherapy after basiliximab administration and tacrolimus/mycophenolate mofetil - in comparison with a standard triple regimen in renal transplantation: Results of the Atlas study
Background. The side effects associated with corticosteroids have led to efforts to minimize their use in renal transplant patients. In this study we compared two corticosteroid-free tacrolimus-based regimens with a standard triple therapy.
Methods. This was a 6-month, phase III, open-label, parallel-group, multicenter study. The total analysis set comprised 451 patients, randomized (1: 1: 1) to receive tacrolimus (Tac) monotherapy following basiliximab (Bas) administration (n = 153), Tac/mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) (n = 151), or, Tac/MMF/corticosteroids triple therapy as a control (n = 147).
Results. The study was completed by 91.2% (triple therapy), 94.7% (Tac/MMF), and 82.4% (Bas/Tac) of patients. Patient baseline characteristics were similar in all groups. The incidences of biopsy-proven acute rejection were 8.2% (triple therapy), 30.5% (Tac/MMF), and 26.1% (Bas/Tac), p < 0.001 (multiple test for comparison with triple therapy); Bas/Tac vs. Tac/MMF, p=ns. The incidences of corticosteroid-resistant acute rejection were 2.0%, 4.0%, and 5.2%, p=ns. Graft survival (95.9%, 96.7%, and 94.7%, p=ns) and patient survival (100%, 99.3%, and 99.3%, p=ns) were similar in all groups. Median serum creatinine at month 6 was 123.0 mu mol/l, (triple therapy), 134.7 mu mol/L (Tac/MMF) and 135.8 mu mol/L (Bas/Tac). The overall safety profiles were similar; differences (p < 0.05) were reported for anaemia (24.5% vs. 12.6% vs. 14.5%), diarrhoea (12.9% vs. 17.9% vs. 5.9%), and leukopenia (7.5% vs. 18.5% vs. 5.9%) for the triple therapy, Tac/MMF, and Bas/Tac group, respectively. The incidences of new-onset diabetes mellitus were 4.6%, 7.1%, and 1.4%, respectively.
Conclusion. Corticosteroid-free immunosuppression was feasible with the Bas/Tac and the Tac/MMF regimens. Both corticosteroid-free regimens were equally effective in preventing acute rejection, with the Bas/Tac therapy offering some safety benefits
