Dielectric Properties of Materials Showing Constant-Phase-Element (CPE) Impedance Response
Constant-Phase Elements (CPE) are often used to fit impedance data arising from a broad range of experimental systems. Four approaches were used to interpret CPE parameters associated with the impedance response of human skin and two metal oxides in terms of characteristic frequencies and film thickness. The values obtained with each approach were compared against independent measurements. The power-law model developed recently by Hirschorn et al.1,2 provided the most reliable interpretation for systems with a normal distribution of properties. Readers are cautioned that the CPE parameter Q does not provide an accurate value for capacitance, even when the CPE exponent α is greater than 0.9
The Wage and Non-wage Costs of Displacement: Evidence from Russia
This paper is the first to analyze the costs of job loss in Russia, using unique new data from the Russian Longitudinal Monitoring Survey over the years 2003-2008, including a special supplement on displacement that was initiated by us. We employ fixed effects regression models and propensity score matching techniques in order to establish the causal effect of displacement for displaced individuals. The paper is innovative insofar as we investigate fringe and in-kind benefits and the propensity to have an informal employment relationship as well as a permanent contract as relevant labor market outcomes upon displacement. We also analyze monthly earnings, hourly wages, employment and hours worked, which are traditionally investigated in the literature. Compared to the control group of non-displaced workers (i.e. stayers and quitters), displaced individuals face a significant income loss following displacement, which is mainly due to the reduction in employment and hours worked. This effect is robust to the definition of displacement. The losses seem to be more pronounced and are especially large for older workers with labor market experience and human capital acquired in Soviet times and for workers with primary and secondary education. Workers displaced from state firms experience particularly large relative losses in the short run, while such losses for workers laid off from private firms are more persistent. Turning to the additional non-conventional labor market outcomes, there is a loss in terms of the number of fringe and in-kind benefits for reemployed individuals but not in terms of their value. There is also some evidence of an increased probability of working in informal jobs if displaced. These results point towards the importance of both firm-specific human capital and of obsolete skills obtained under the centrally planned economy as well as to a wider occurrence of job insecurity among displaced workers
The transition of people’s preferences for the intervention of the government in the economy of re-unified Germany
Covering the first fifteen years immediately after German re- unification, this paper analyzes the people’s support to the transition. The focus is on individuals’ preferences for the intervention of the government in the economy and on the opinion about competition per se. Eastern German data are compared with Western German data. Using suitable data that allow for interpersonal comparisons, the paper shows that Eastern Germans have always preferred an intervention of the public hand in the economy deeper than Western Germans; these different positions have hardly converged during the examined period of time. However there are no significant differences with respect to how Germans perceive competition per se: it is considered as a good by the people living in both parts of the country.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Social Security and Retirement During Transition: Microeconometric Evidence from Slovenia
In this paper we analyse old-age retirement decisions of Slovenian men and women eligible to retire in the period 1997-2003. In comparison to established market economies, we find relatively high hazard rates of retirement that decline with age. This peculiar pattern can be partly attributed to weak incentives to work inherent in the design of Social Security, and is reflected in predominantly negative values of accruals, and to transition-specific increase in wage inequality in the late 1980s and early 1990s. This is reflected in low wages and relativily high pensions of less productive (skilled) workers and vice versa. We also find that the probability of retirement increases with social security wealth and decreases with net wages, although the response to option value to work, when controlling for wage differences, is rather weak. Our results also imply that less educated persons, persons with greater private wealth, and persons entitled to severance payment are more likely to retire
Method for Flow Measurement in Microfluidic Channels Based on Electrical Impedance Spectroscopy
We have developed and characterized two novel micro flow sensors based on
measuring the electrical impedance of the interface between the flowing liquid
and metallic electrodes embedded on the channel walls. These flow sensors are
very simple to fabricate and use, are extremely compact and can easily be
integrated into most microfluidic systems. One of these devices is a micropore
with two tantalum/platinum electrodes on its edges; the other is a micro
channel with two tantalum /platinum electrodes placed perpendicular to the
channel on its walls. In both sensors the flow rate is measured via the
electrical impedance between the two metallic electrodes, which is the
impedance of two metal-liquid junctions in series. The dependency of the
metal-liquid junction impedance on the flow rate of the liquid has been
studied. The effects of different parameters on the sensor's outputs and its
noise behavior are investigated. Design guidelines are extracted and applied to
achieve highly sensitive micro flow sensors with low noise.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figure
