    Influence of design parameters on occurence of oil whirl

    Oil whirl instability is a serious problem in oil lubricated journal bearings. The phenomenon is characterized by a subsynchronous vibration of the journal within the bush and is particularly apparent in turbogenerators, aeroengines and electric motors. A review is presented of previous papers on the subject of oil whirl, and a simple theory is described which was used to aid the design of an oil whirl test rig. Predictions of the onset of oil whirl made by the theory presented were found to agree with those of previous researchers. They showed that increasing the shaft flexibility, or the lubricant viscosity, and decreasing the bearing radial clearance tended to reduce the oil whirl onset speed thus making the system more unstable

    Determination of QA-content in bacterial reaction centers: an indispensable requirement for quantifying B-branch charge separation

    AbstractWe have been able to determine the occupancy of the quinone site at the A-branch (QA) of a reaction center preparation with an accuracy of 2%. This is achieved by accumulating the P+Q−A state after multiple actinic excitation and monitoring the extent of the 30 ms ground state bleaching. This bleaching is corrected for deviations from complete saturation due to competing charge separation to the B-branch. On the other hand, knowledge of the QA content is indispensable for determining the yield of B-branch charge separation from nanosecond transients associated with the recombination of P+H−B, which have to be corrected for the nanosecond signal originating from P+H−A of RCs having lost QA

    This paper presents the Royal Stoke University Hospital pin-site care protocol. It has evolved during 25 years of fracture management research at the centre and has been developed in accordance with the RCN Consensus Guidelines on Pin-Site Care. However, it contains some innovative adjuncts that could minimise the incidence of pin-site infections requiring medicinal intervention. Scope for research on dressing type and cleansing solutions still remains. However, this article presents the importance of patient education and dressing compression in the prevention of irritation around the pin-site, thus reducing the risk of developing any infection
