Eye movement analysis and cognitive assessment: the use of comparative visual search tasks in a non-immersive vr application
Background: An adequate behavioral response depends on attentional and mnesic processes. When these basic cognitive functions are impaired, the use of non-immersive Virtual Reality Applications (VRAs) can be a reliable technique for assessing the level of impairment. However, most non-immersive VRAs use indirect measures to make inferences about visual attention and mnesic processes (e.g., time to task completion, error rate).
Objectives: To examine whether the eye movement analysis through eye tracking (ET) can be a reliable method to probe more effectively where and how attention is deployed and how it is linked with visual working memory during comparative visual search tasks (CVSTs) in non-immersive VRAs. Methods: The eye movements of 50 healthy participants were continuously recorded while CVSTs, selected from a set of cognitive tasks in the Systemic Lisbon Battery (SLB). Then a VRA designed to assess of cognitive impairments were randomly presented. Results: The total fixation duration, the number of visits in the areas of interest and in the interstimulus space, along with the total execution time was significantly different as a function of the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE) scores. Toeplitz Inverse Covariance-Based Clustering of Multivariate Time Series Data
Subsequence clustering of multivariate time series is a useful tool for
discovering repeated patterns in temporal data. Once these patterns have been
discovered, seemingly complicated datasets can be interpreted as a temporal
sequence of only a small number of states, or clusters. For example, raw sensor
data from a fitness-tracking application can be expressed as a timeline of a
select few actions (i.e., walking, sitting, running). However, discovering
these patterns is challenging because it requires simultaneous segmentation and
clustering of the time series. Furthermore, interpreting the resulting clusters
is difficult, especially when the data is high-dimensional. Here we propose a
new method of model-based clustering, which we call Toeplitz Inverse
Covariance-based Clustering (TICC). Each cluster in the TICC method is defined
by a correlation network, or Markov random field (MRF), characterizing the
interdependencies between different observations in a typical subsequence of
that cluster. Based on this graphical representation, TICC simultaneously
segments and clusters the time series data. We solve the TICC problem through
alternating minimization, using a variation of the expectation maximization
(EM) algorithm. We derive closed-form solutions to efficiently solve the two
resulting subproblems in a scalable way, through dynamic programming and the
alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM), respectively. We validate
our approach by comparing TICC to several state-of-the-art baselines in a
series of synthetic experiments, and we then demonstrate on an automobile
sensor dataset how TICC can be used to learn interpretable clusters in

Access to palivizumab among children at high risk of respiratory syncytial virus complications in English hospitals
Objectives:
Palivizumab is a monoclonal antibody which can prevent infection with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Due to its high cost, it is recommended for high-risk infants only. We aimed to determine the proportion of infants eligible for palivizumab treatment in England who receive at least one dose. /
Methods:
We used the Hospital Treatment Insights database containing hospital admission records linked to hospital pharmacy dispensing data for 43/153 hospitals in England. Infants born between 2010 and 2016 were considered eligible for palivizumab if their medical records indicated chronic lung disease (CLD), congenital heart disease (CHD), or severe immunodeficiency (SCID), and they met additional criteria based on gestational age at birth and age at start of the RSV season (beginning of October). We calculated the proportion of infants who received at least one dose of palivizumab in their first RSV season, and modelled the odds of treatment according to multiple child characteristics using logistic regression models. /
Results:
We identified 3,712 eligible children, of whom 2,479 (67%) had complete information on all risk factors. Palivizumab was prescribed to 832 of eligible children (34%). Being born at <30 weeksâ gestation, aged <6 months at the start of RSV season, and having two or more of CLD, CHD or SCID were associated with higher odds of treatment. /
Conclusion:
In England, palivizumab is not prescribed to the majority of children who are eligible to receive it. Doctors managing these infants may be unfamiliar with the eligibility criteria or constrained by other considerations, such as cost
Estimating oceanic primary production using vertical irradiance and chlorophyll profiles from ocean gliders in the North Atlantic
An autonomous underwater vehicle (Seaglider) has been used to estimate marine primary production (PP) using a combination of irradiance and fluorescence vertical profiles. This method provides estimates for depth-resolved and temporally evolving PP on fine spatial scales in the absence of ship-based calibrations. We describe techniques to correct for known issues associated with long autonomous deployments such as sensor calibration drift and fluorescence quenching. Comparisons were made between the Seaglider, stable isotope (13C), and satellite estimates of PP. The Seaglider-based PP estimates were comparable to both satellite estimates and stable isotope measurements
Magnetic properties of submicron Co islands and their use as artificial pinning centers
We report on the magnetic properties of elongated submicron magnetic islands
and their influence on a superconducting film. The magnetic properties were
studied by magnetization hysteresis loop measurements and scanning-force
microscopy. In the as-grown state, the islands have a magnetic structure
consisting of two antiparallel domains. This stable domain configuration has
been directly visualized as a 2x2-checkerboard pattern by magnetic-force
microscopy. In the remanent state, after magnetic saturation along the easy
axis, all islands have a single-domain structure with the magnetic moment
oriented along the magnetizing field direction. Periodic lattices of these Co
islands act as efficient artificial pinning arrays for the flux lines in a
superconducting Pb film deposited on top of the Co islands. The influence of
the magnetic state of the dots on their pinning efficiency is investigated in
these films, before and after the Co dots are magnetized.Comment: 6 pages including figure
Knowledge regarding Hepatitis C among injecting drug users, Drugs: Education, Prevention and Policy,
Abstract Hepatitis C (HCV) is very prevalent among injecting drug users (IDU). Control of this infection poses a major challenge to harm reduction services. Education of all IDU regarding HCV constitutes part of the harm reduction programme. We sought to assess understanding of HCV among IDU attending an addiction treatment clinic and to identify whether or not those with increased contact with health professionals demonstrated better understanding. 105 IDU were interviewed to assess their knowledge regarding modes of transmission and chronicity of HCV infection. They had first injected an average of 10.0 years previously. Interviewees were more successful at identifying activities which carried a risk of HCV transmission than they were at identifying activities which posed no risk of infection. Over one third falsely believed that one could contract HCV infection even when injecting 'safely'. Understanding of the long term nature of HCV infection was also impaired. A group on methadone maintenance for a median period of 1.4 years failed to demonstrate significantly better knowledge than those attending for a 21-day detoxification. Those in frequent contact with a GP performed less well than those without such contact. Understanding of HCV among IDU is inadequate and must improve if primary prevention efforts are to succeed. We question the value of didactic approaches to educating IDU and call for a more experiential teaching style which may be more successful at countering prevalent misconceptions
Multi-component Transparent Conducting Oxides: Progress in Materials Modelling
Transparent conducting oxides (TCOs) play an essential role in modern
optoelectronic devices through their combination of electrical conductivity and
optical transparency. We review recent progress in our understanding of
multi-component TCOs formed from solid-solutions of ZnO, In2O3, Ga2O3 and
Al2O3, with a particular emphasis on the contributions of materials modelling,
primarily based on Density Functional Theory. In particular, we highlight three
major results from our work: (i) the fundamental principles governing the
crystal structures of multi-component oxide structures including (In2O3)(ZnO)n,
named IZO, and (In2O3)m(Ga2O3)l(ZnO)n, named IGZO; (ii) the relationship
between elemental composition and optical and electrical behaviour, including
valence band alignments; (iii) the high-performance of amorphous oxide
semiconductors. From these advances, the challenge of the rational design of

Decay of Turbulence in the Upper Ocean following Sudden Isolation from Surface Forcing
Measurements of velocity, hydrography, surface meteorology, and microstructure were made through several squall events during a westerly wind burst that occurred in the Western Pacific warm pool in December 1992. Sustained wind forcing generated a weakly stratified turbulent surface layer that extended to the top of the main thermocline. Following each rain event, freshwater formed a statically stable layer in the upper 4â12 m. The subsequent evolution of the mixing profile was strongly depth-dependent. Turbulence increased dramatically in the fresh layer adjacent to the surface but decreased in the underlying layer. The factor by which turbulence decreased following a given squall was strongly correlated with the net rainfall. The observed timescale for the decay of the turbulence was about 0.7 buoyancy periods, similar to decay times observed near the surface after sunrise. However, these decay times are significantly larger than those estimated indirectly (as the ratio of dissipation rate to turbulent kinetic energy) from turbulent patches in the thermocline. To account for the discrepancy, the authors hypothesize that turbulence production continues to act during the observed decay process, partially counteracting the effect of dissipation
NGO Legitimacy: Four Models
The aim of this paper is to examine NGOsâ legitimacy in the context of global politics. In order to yield a better understanding of NGOsâ legitimacy at the international level it is important to examine how their legitimacy claims are evaluated. This paper proposes dividing the literature into four models based on the theoretical and analytical approaches to their legitimacy claims: the market model, social change model, new institutionalism model and the critical model. The legitimacy criteria generated by the models are significantly different in their analytical scope of how one is to assess the role of NGOs operating as political actors contributing to democracy. The paper argues that the models present incomplete, and sometimes conflicting, views of NGOsâ legitimacy and that this poses a legitimacy dilemma for those assessing the political agency of NGOs in world politics. The paper concludes that only by approaching their legitimacy holistically can the democratic role of NGOs be explored and analysed in the context of world politics
The Effect of low Momentum Quantum Fluctuations on a Coherent Field Structure
In the present work the evolution of a coherent field structure of the
Sine-Gordon equation under quantum fluctuations is studied. The basic equations
are derived from the coherent state approximation to the functional
Schr\"odinger equation for the field. These equations are solved asymptotically
and numerically for three physical situations. The first is the study of the
nonlinear mechanism responsible for the quantum stability of the soliton in the
presence of low momentum fluctuations. The second considers the scattering of a
wave by the Soliton. Finally the third problem considered is the collision of
Solitons and the stability of a breather.
It is shown that the complete integrability of the Sine-Gordon equation
precludes fusion and splitting processes in this simplified model.
The approximate results obtained are non-perturbative in nature, and are
valid for the full nonlinear interaction in the limit of low momentum
fluctuations. It is also found that these approximate results are in good
agreement with full numerical solutions of the governing equations. This
suggests that a similar approach could be used for the baby Skyrme model, which
is not completely integrable. In this case the higher space dimensionality and
the internal degrees of freedom which prevent the integrability will be
responsable for fusion and splitting processes. This work provides a starting
point in the numerical solution of the full quantum problem of the interaction
