    Anisotropy and effective dimensionality crossover of the fluctuation conductivity of hybrid superconductor/ferromagnet structures

    We study the fluctuation conductivity of a superconducting film, which is placed to perpendicular non-uniform magnetic field with the amplitude H0H_0 induced by the ferromagnet with domain structure. The conductivity tensor is shown to be essentially anisotropic. The magnitude of this anisotropy is governed by the temperature and the typical width of magnetic domains dd. For dLH0=Φ0/H0d\ll L_{H_0}=\sqrt{\Phi_0/H_0} the difference between diagonal fluctuation conductivity components Δσ\Delta\sigma_\parallel along the domain walls and Δσ\Delta\sigma_\perp across them has the order of (d/LH0)4(d/L_{H_0})^4. In the opposite case for dLH0d\gg L_{H_0} the fluctuation conductivity tensor reveals effective dimensionality crossover from standard two-dimensional (TTc)1(T-T_c)^{-1} behavior well above the critical temperature TcT_c to the one-dimensional (TTc)3/2(T-T_c)^{-3/2} one close to TcT_c for Δσ\Delta\sigma_\parallel or to the (TTc)1/2(T-T_c)^{-1/2} dependence for Δσ\Delta\sigma_\perp. In the intermediate case dLH0d\approx L_{H_0} for a fixed temperature shift from TcT_c the dependence Δσ(H0)\Delta\sigma_\parallel(H_0) is shown to have a minimum at H0Φ0/d2H_0\sim\Phi_0/d^2 while Δσ(H0)\Delta\sigma_\perp(H_0) is a monotonically increasing function.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figure

    Intersections of quadrics, moment-angle manifolds, and Hamiltonian-minimal Lagrangian embeddings

    We study the topology of Hamiltonian-minimal Lagrangian submanifolds N in C^m constructed from intersections of real quadrics in a work of the first author. This construction is linked via an embedding criterion to the well-known Delzant construction of Hamiltonian toric manifolds. We establish the following topological properties of N: every N embeds as a submanifold in the corresponding moment-angle manifold Z, and every N is the total space of two different fibrations, one over the torus T^{m-n} with fibre a real moment-angle manifold R, and another over a quotient of R by a finite group with fibre a torus. These properties are used to produce new examples of Hamiltonian-minimal Lagrangian submanifolds with quite complicated topology.Comment: 14 pages, published version (minor changes

    Magnetoresistivity in a Tilted Magnetic Field in p-Si/SiGe/Si Heterostructures with an Anisotropic g-Factor: Part II

    The magnetoresistance components ρxx\rho_{xx} and ρxy\rho_{xy} were measured in two p-Si/SiGe/Si quantum wells that have an anisotropic g-factor in a tilted magnetic field as a function of temperature, field and tilt angle. Activation energy measurements demonstrate the existence of a ferromagnetic-paramagnetic (F-P) transition for a sample with a hole density of pp=2×1011\times10^{11}\,cm2^{-2}. This transition is due to crossing of the 0\uparrow and 1\downarrow Landau levels. However, in another sample, with pp=7.2×1010\times10^{10}\,cm2^{-2}, the 0\uparrow and 1\downarrow Landau levels coincide for angles Θ\Theta=0-70o^{\text{o}}. Only for Θ\Theta > 70o^{\text{o}} do the levels start to diverge which, in turn, results in the energy gap opening.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figure

    MV3: A new word based stream cipher using rapid mixing and revolving buffers

    MV3 is a new word based stream cipher for encrypting long streams of data. A direct adaptation of a byte based cipher such as RC4 into a 32- or 64-bit word version will obviously need vast amounts of memory. This scaling issue necessitates a look for new components and principles, as well as mathematical analysis to justify their use. Our approach, like RC4's, is based on rapidly mixing random walks on directed graphs (that is, walks which reach a random state quickly, from any starting point). We begin with some well understood walks, and then introduce nonlinearity in their steps in order to improve security and show long term statistical correlations are negligible. To minimize the short term correlations, as well as to deter attacks using equations involving successive outputs, we provide a method for sequencing the outputs derived from the walk using three revolving buffers. The cipher is fast -- it runs at a speed of less than 5 cycles per byte on a Pentium IV processor. A word based cipher needs to output more bits per step, which exposes more correlations for attacks. Moreover we seek simplicity of construction and transparent analysis. To meet these requirements, we use a larger state and claim security corresponding to only a fraction of it. Our design is for an adequately secure word-based cipher; our very preliminary estimate puts the security close to exhaustive search for keys of size < 256 bits.Comment: 27 pages, shortened version will appear in "Topics in Cryptology - CT-RSA 2007

    BPS Monopole Equation in Omega-background

    We study deformed supersymmetries in N=2 super Yang-Mills theory in the Omega-backgrounds characterized by two complex parameters ϵ1,ϵ2\epsilon_1, \epsilon_2. When one of the ϵ\epsilon-parameters vanishes, the theory has extended supersymmetries. We compute the central charge of the algebra and obtain the deformed BPS monopole equation.     Mechanisms of arsenic clustering in silicon

    A model of arsenic clustering in silicon is proposed and analyzed. The main feature of the proposed model is the assumption that negatively charged arsenic complexes play a dominant role in the clustering process. To confirm this assumption, electron density and concentration of impurity atoms incorporated into the clusters are calculated as functions of the total arsenic concentration. A number of the negatively charged clusters incorporating a point defect and one or more arsenic atoms are investigated. It is shown that for the doubly negatively charged clusters or for clusters incorporating more than one arsenic atom the electron density reaches a maximum value and then monotonically and slowly decreases as total arsenic concentration increases. In the case of doubly negatively charged cluster incorporating two arsenic atoms, the calculated electron density agrees well with the experimental data. Agreement with the experiment confirms the conclusion that two arsenic atoms participate in the cluster formation. Among all present models, the proposed model of clustering by formation of doubly negatively charged cluster incorporating two arsenic atoms gives the best fit to the experimental data and can be used in simulation of high concentration arsenic diffusion.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures.     Analysis of property-preservation capabilities of the ROX and ESh hash domain extenders

    Two of the most recent and powerful multi-property preserving (MPP) hash domain extension transforms are the Ramdom-Oracle-XOR (ROX) transform and the Enveloped Shoup (ESh) transform. The former was proposed by Andreeva et al. at ASIACRYPT 2007 and the latter was proposed by Bellare and Ristenpart at ICALP 2007. In the existing literature, ten notions of security for hash functions have been considered in analysis of MPP capabilities of domain extension transforms, namely CR, Sec, aSec, eSec (TCR), Pre, aPre, ePre, MAC, PRF, PRO. Andreeva et al. showed that ROX is able to preserve seven properties; namely collision resistance (CR), three flavors of second preimage resistance (Sec, aSec, eSec) and three variants of preimage resistance (Pre, aPre, ePre). Bellare and Ristenpart showed that ESh is capable of preserving five important security notions; namely CR, message authentication code (MAC), pseudorandom function (PRF), pseudorandom oracle (PRO), and target collision resistance (TCR). Nonetheless, there is no further study on these two MPP hash domain extension transforms with regard to the other properties. The aim of this paper is to fill this gap. Firstly, we show that ROX does not preserve two other widely-used and important security notions, namely MAC and PRO. We also show a positive result about ROX, namely that it also preserves PRF. Secondly, we show that ESh does not preserve other four properties, namely Sec, aSec, Pre, and aPre. On the positive side we show that ESh can preserve ePre property. Our results in this paper provide a full picture of the MPP capabilities of both ROX and ESh transforms by completing the property-preservation analysis of these transforms in regard to all ten security notions of interest, namely CR, Sec, aSec, eSec (TCR), Pre, aPre, ePre, MAC, PRF, PRO

    Inhaled Polymyxin in Treatment of Elderly Patients with Severe Community-Acquired Klebsiella pneumoniae-Induced Pneumonia

    Background. Inhaled administration of antibacterial drugs (ABD) is a new insufficiently studied area of modern pulmonology. Its feasible advantages comprise a targeted drug delivery to the infection site, amplified antibiotic concentration in tracheobronchial secretion and reduced systemic toxicity risks. The most common inhaled ABDs include aminoglycosides and polymyxin­E (colistin).Aim. A comparison of patient cohorts with severe community­acquired pneumonia induced by Klebsiella pneumoniae receiving and not receiving inhaled colistin.Materials and methods. The study conducted is a retrospective multicentre controlled non­randomised assay. Among the 45 patients included, 20 were and 25 were not receiving colistin inhalation. The endpoint was survival. Data were analysed with Statistica 6.0.Results and discussion. The cohorts differed significantly neither in the main clinical and laboratory values, nor in point scoring of severity and outcome. However, statistical significance was obtained for differences in the ALV (p = 0.04) and pneumonia resolution (p = 0.044) times.Conclusion. Inhaled polymyxin­supplemented therapy for severe community­acquired pneumonia induced by Kl. pneumoniae significantly reduces the ALV and pneumonia resolution times in elderly and senile patients but does not affect survival

    A hybrid acoustic spectroscopy technique has been used to demonstrate the (reversible) conversion of high frequency electric fields into longitudinal acoustic waves within a modulation-doped pseudomorphic Si/Si0.88Ge0.12/Si heterostructure. This provides compelling evidence for the existence of a piezoelectriclike coupling within such structures
