Television Viewing Does Not Have to Be Sedentary: Motivation to Participate in a TV Exercise Program
The present study explored which underlying motivations induced people to participate in a television exercise program called âThe Netherlands on the Move!-televisionâ (NOM-tv). A cross-sectional study was carried out among 1,349 viewers of NOM-tv. The respondents completed the intrinsic motivation inventory (IMI), assessing their levels of intrinsic motivation towards participating in the NOM-tv exercises. The results showed that higher levels of intrinsic motivation (i.e. enjoying the NOM-tv exercises, feeling competent to perform this activity, and willingness to put effort into the exercises) were the most important predictive factors of more frequent participation in the NOM-tv exercises. Future screen-based interventions to reduce sedentary behavior should aim especially at encouraging people's intrinsic orientations towards physical activity in an autonomy-supportive way

Molecular dynamics simulations of oxide memory resistors (memristors)
Reversible bipolar nano-switches that can be set and read electronically in a
solid-state two-terminal device are very promising for applications. We have
performed molecular-dynamics simulations that mimic systems with oxygen
vacancies interacting via realistic potentials and driven by an external bias
voltage. The competing short- and long-range interactions among charged mobile
vacancies lead to density fluctuations and short-range ordering, while
illustrating some aspects of observed experimental behavior, such as memristor

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on ovarian tissue cryopreservation planning in the Bologna clinical center
Introduction: Treatment of patients with COVID-19 has been a priority by competing with the treatment of any other disease due to limited hospital resources. The current pandemic situation has focused the attention of healthcare providers around the world away from all other non-emergency health problems, including oncofertility. The aim of the study was to evaluate the repercussions of the COVID-19 pandemic on the activity levels of ovarian tissue cryopreservation (OTC) in the our center. Methods: The study analyzed the number of patients treated for OTC in our center during three periods: pre-pandemic period: March 2019-February 2020, pandemic period: March 2020-February 2021 and post-pandemic period: March 2021-February 2022. Results: In our center routine hospital operation was completely reorganized, allowing only urgent interventions. Continuing to urgently preserve fertility during the pandemic required rapid changes to our standard practices for the care of these vulnerable patients. Despite the modifications, there was no difference in the number of OTC performed among the periods analyzed. Similarly, the number of patients who did not perform OTC was the same over the three years analyzed. Discussion: Despite the local and national restructuring of care to conserve resources and protect the community, it is significant to continue offering fertility-sparing treatment to cancer patients. This emphasis on the importance of preserving fertility despite the pandemic further highlights the essential and urgent nature of this procedure
Simulating relaxation channels of CO2 in clathrate canocages
The energy levels of CO2 in the small (s) and large (l) nano-cages of cubic sI clathrates are calculated in the Born-Oppenheimer approximation using pairwise atom-atom interaction potentials. In the s cage, the centre of mass of CO2 oscillates with small amplitudes, asymmetrically about the cage center with harmonic frequencies around 100 cm-1. In the l cage, oscillations are anharmonic with large amplitude motions in a plane parallel to the hexagonal faces of the cage and the corresponding frequencies are calculated to be 55 cm-1 and 30 cm-1. Librational harmonic frequencies are calculated at 101.7 cm-1 and 56.0 cm-1 in the 5 cage and at 27.9 cm-1 and 46.4 cm-1 in the l cage. Results show that the coupling between the CO2 molecule and the nano-cage is quite different for the low frequency translational, rotational or librational modes and the high frequency vibrational modes, which consequently leads to different relaxation channels
Phytoplankton community responses in a shallow lake following lanthanum-bentonite application
The release of phosphorus (P) from bed sediments to the overlying water can delay the recovery of lakes for decades following reductions in catchment contributions, preventing water quality targets being met within timeframes set out by environmental legislation (e.g. EU Water Framework Directive: WFD). Therefore supplementary solutions for restoring lakes have been explored, including the capping of sediment P sources using a lanthanum (La)-modified bentonite clay to reduce internal P loading and enhance the recovery process. Here we present results from Loch Flemington where the first long-term field trial documenting responses of phytoplankton community structure and abundance, and the UK WFD phytoplankton metric to a La-bentonite application was performed. A Before-After-Control-Impact (BACI) analysis was used to distinguish natural variability from treatment effect and confirmed significant reductions in the magnitude of summer cyanobacterial blooms in Loch Flemington, relative to the control site, following La-bentonite application. However this initial cyanobacterial response was not sustained beyond two years after application, which implied that the reduction in internal P loading was short-lived; several possible explanations for this are discussed. One reason is that this ecological quality indicator is sensitive to inter-annual variability in weather patterns, particularly summer rainfall and water temperature. Over the monitoring period, the phytoplankton community structure of Loch Flemington became less dominated by cyanobacteria and more functionally diverse. This resulted in continual improvements in the phytoplankton compositional and abundance metrics, which were not observed at the control site, and may suggest an ecological response to the sustained reduction in filterable reactive phosphorus (FRP) concentration following La-bentonite application. Overall, phytoplankton classification indicated that the lake moved from poor to moderate ecological status but did not reach the proxy water quality target (i.e. WFD Good Ecological Status) within four years of the application. As for many other shallow lakes, the effective control of internal P loading in Loch Flemington will require further implementation of both in-lake and catchment-based measures. Our work emphasizes the need for appropriate experimental design and long-term monitoring programmes, to ascertain the efficacy of intervention measures in delivering environmental improvements at the field scale
Sonographic Assessment of Uterine Biometry for the Diagnosis of Diffuse Adenomyosis in a Tertiary Outpatient Clinic
Background: to compare several uterine biometric parameters at transvaginal ultrasound (TVUS) between adenomyosis and non-adenomyosis uteri and evaluate their role for the diagnosis of diffuse adenomyosis. Methods: prospective observational study conducted between the 1 February 2022 and the 30 April 2022. In this case, 56 patients with TVUS diagnosis of adenomyosis were included. A 1:1 ratio age and parity-matched group of non-adenomyosis patients was selected. We compared sonographic uterine biometric parameters (longitudinal (LD), anteroposterior (APD) and transverse (TD) diameters, volume, simple and complex diameter ratios) and investigated their diagnostic performance. Results: all sonographic parameters were significantly different between the study groups, except for TD/(LD+APD). Optimal cut-off values of APD and LD/APD showed the best sensitivity and specificity. APD diameter equal or superior to 39.5 mm (95% CI, 36.2â42.8) had sensitivity of 0.70 (95% CI, 0.57â0.80), specificity of 0.71 (95% CI, 0.59â0.82) and accuracy of 0.75 (95% CI, 0.66â0.84). LD/APD equal or inferior to 2.05 (95% CI, 1.96â2.13) showed sensitivity and specificity of 0.70 (95% CI, 0.57â0.80) each and accuracy of 0.72 (95% CI, 0.62â0.81). Conclusions: several biometric uterine parameters at TVUS in fertile-aged women were statistically different between adenomyosis and non-adenomyosis uteri, though their optimal cut-off values showed low accuracy in diagnosing adenomyosis
Coliform pyosalpinx as a rare complication of appendicectomy: a case report and review of the literature on best practice
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Coliform pyosalpinx is a rare entity. We report a case that occurred three months after appendicectomy for gangrenous appendicitis. There follows a literature review on best practice for the treatment of pyosalpinx.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>A seventeen year old girl presented with an acute abdomen three months after an appendicectomy for gangrenous appendicitis. Intraoperative findings were bilateral pyosalpinx treated by aspiration, saline and Betadine irrigation and intravenous antibiotics.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Microbiological analysis of the pus revealed <it>Escherichia coli </it>and anaerobes. Chlamydia and Candida were not isolated. This is the first known reported case of Coliform Pyosalpinx following appendicectomy. The best treatment does not necessarily involve salpingectomy especially in women of reproductive age where fertility may become compromised.</p
Second-Trimester Pregnancy Loss at an Urban Hospital
Objectives: Second-trimester spontaneous pregnancy losses are less common than first-trimester losses, and are often associated with ascending infection and/or acute chorioamnionitis. A Medline search revealed only two large studies published in the recent literature, reporting incidences of chorioamnionitis of 39.3% and 58.2%, respectively. These studies did not address the use of histopathology for the identification of organisms. Since ascending infection is likely to be a significant cause of second-trimester loss in the inner-city population at the University Hospital in Newark, New Jersey, we sought to evaluate the usefulness of stains for microorganisms, which are rarely utilized on these specimens. Methods: Retrospective review of the medical records and pathologic material for cases of spontaneous abortions seen at the University Hospital in Newark between January 1999 and March 2001 was undertaken. Stains for microorganisms were performed on archival placental tissue for cases with histologic acute chorioamnionitis. Results: A total of 67 cases were available for review, of which 38 cases (56.7%) showed histologic acute chorioamnionitis, similar to the rates in one previous study, but significantly higher than those in the other (p = 0.01). Of 25 cases with histological chorioamnionitis for which appropriate fetal material was available, 13 cases (52%) showed polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs) in the fetal lungs, one case (4%) showed PMNs in the fetal stomach, and seven cases (28%) showed PMNs in both the lung and the stomach. Of the 38 cases with chorioamnionitis, Gram stains showed Gram-positive cocci in six cases, two of which were culture positive for group B streptococcus. WarthinâStarry stains showed filamentous organisms consistent with Fusobacterium sp. in the placenta in three cases. Conclusions: Acute chorioamnionitis is associated with second-trimester pregnancy loss at this inner-city hospital, and may be related to the high incidence of risk factors in this population. A small proportion of cases can be further characterized by the inclusion of Gram and WarthinâStarry stains in the evaluation. Selection of cases with histologic acute chorioamnionitis for further study with special stains may provide additional information on the causative organism
