    Does the use of playback affect the estimated numbers of red–legged partridge Alectoris rufa?

    ¿Afecta el uso de playback a las cifras estimadas de perdiz roja, Alectoris rufa? La perdiz roja, Alectoris rufa, vive en una situación de riesgo potencial en cuanto a su conservación a largo plazo en Italia, dado que su hábitat se ve cada vez más amenazado por la desaparición de los ambientes tradicionalmente relacionados con la agricultura. En tal situación, es importante aplicar métodos de control efectivos para estudiar los cambios poblacionales a través del tiempo, y la identificación de amenazas potenciales a la conservación. El objetivo de este estudio era evaluar la efectividad del método de playback para estimar la densidad de machos que vocalizaban. Comparamos el método del playback con las llamadas espontáneas de los machos al amanecer, y las observaciones directas a lo largo de transectos. El resultado de los datos sin procesar de los recuentos mediante playback revelaron una gran tasa de subestimación, comparados con el método que rindió los mejores resultados: el recuento de vocalizaciones espontáneas al amanecer. Nuestro estudio proporciona una evaluación crítica de un método que está ampliamente extendido, aunque los datos sobre su eficacia son escasos. Nuestros datos no evalúan la probabilidad de detección de los tres métodos. Nuestra intención era únicamente evaluar qué métodos arrojan los mejores resultados en términos de la estimación del tamaño de la población en las mismas condiciones de campo (misma densidad de población, mismo periodo, misma área de monitorización). Los resultados arrojan algunas dudas sobre la capacidad del método del playback para monitorizar las poblaciones de perdiz roja. Se discuten las implicaciones de nuestros resultados para su aplicación en la gestión de poblaciones de perdiz roja.The red–legged partridge Alectoris rufa lives in a situation of potential conservation risk for its long–term preservation in Italy as its habitat is increasingly threatened by the disappearance of traditional agriculture–related environments. In such a situation, it is important to use effective and appropriate monitoring methods to assess population changes over time and to identify potential conservation threats. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the playback method to estimate the density of calling males. We compared playback method with spontaneous calling of males at dawn and direct observations along transects. The results on raw count data of playback counts revealed a strong underestimation rate compared to the method that gave the best results: count of spontaneous calls at dawn. Our study provides a critical evaluation of a method that is widely used even though data about its effectiveness are scarce. Our data do not evaluate detection probability of the three methods. Our aim was only to evaluate which methods give the best results in term of population size estimation under the same field condition (same population density, same period, same monitoring area). The results raise some doubts about the ability of the playback method to monitor red–legged partridge populations. The implications of our results for red–legged population management are discussed

    Sanitary Emergencies at theWild/Domestic Caprines Interface in Europe.

    Population density and distribution of the four native European wild Caprines (Rupicapra rupicapra, Rupicapra pyrenaica, Capra ibex, Capra pyrenaica) have increased in recent decades. The improved conservation status of this valuable wildlife, while a welcome event in general terms, is at the same time a matter of concern since, intuitively, frequent and tighter contacts with sympatric livestock imply a greater risk of cross-transmission of emerging and re-emerging pathogens, and offer unexpected opportunities for pathogens to spread, persist and evolve. This article recalls the transmissible diseases that are perceived in Europe to be of major significance from a conservation perspective, namely brucellosis (BRC) by Brucella melitensis, infectious kerato-conjunctivitis (IKC) by Mycoplasma conjunctivae, pestivirosis (PV) by the border disease virus strain 4 and mange by Sarcoptes scabiei. Special emphasis has been put on the epidemiological role played by small domestic ruminants, and on key knowledge needed to implement evidence-based prevention and control strategies. Remarkably, scientific evidence demonstrates that major demographic downturns in affected wild Caprinae populations in recent decades have often been triggered by pathogens cross-transmitted at the livestock/wildlife interface

    Biometric characterization of the Red-legged Partridges Alectoris rufa of northwestern Italy

    The biometrics of the Red-legged Partridge Alectoris rufa has been relatively well studied in the western part of its distribution range (Iberian Peninsula and France), especially due to the available large hunting bag samples. Conversely, the Italian population is poorly characterized. We analysed a sample of 254 live birds trapped and ringed in the northern Apennines (province of Alessandria, northwestern Italy), by measuring body mass and the length of wing, eighth primary, tail, tarsus and bill. We found significant differences in some biometric measurements between sex and age classes. A subsample of birds (n = 112) was genetically tested for introgressive hybridization with A. chukar, an introduced species, showing that 16.1 % of free-living partridge are hybrid individuals. When we analysed separately "pure"and "introgressed"birds we found only small biometric differences in body mass of adult males. Finally, our results were compared with the biometry of other populations from the whole natural range of the species (France, Spain and Portugal) showing a negative biometric trend of wing length from westernmost to southeastern birds of the range. Introgressed birds found in the studied population were not easily distinguishable with biometric criteria from pure A. rufa rufa, so genetic analysis is highly recommended when planning reintroductions or restocking

    Concurrent Chorioptic Mange and Dermatophytosis in Dairy Goats: A Case Report

    SIMPLE SUMMARY: Chorioptes mites are particularly common in goats, with infestations usually subclinical and often asymptomatic. In the present case, many animals had a severe clinical presentation, possibly due to the associated dermatophyte infection (Trichophyton verrucosum), since a concurrent or underlying disease may exacerbate clinical response. Goats were treated topically with pour-on Eprinomectin (1 mg/kg), while an enilconazole solution was used for environmental disinfection against dermatophyte spores. ABSTRACT: A concurrent chorioptic mange and dermatophytosis outbreak occurred in a goat flock in northwestern Italy.     The effect of data analysis strategies in density estimation of mountain ungulates using distance sampling

    Distance sampling is being extensively used to estimate the abundance of animal populations. Nevertheless, the great variety of ways in which data can be analyzed may limit comparisons due to the lack of standardization of such protocols. In this study, the influence of analytical procedures for distance sampling data on density estimates and their precision was assessed. We have used data from 21 surveys of mountain ungulates in the Iberian Peninsula, France and the Italian Alps. Data from such surveys were analyzed with the program Distance 6.0. Our analyses show that estimated density can be higher for higher levels of data truncation. We also confirm that the estimates tend to be more precise when data are analyzed without binning and without truncating. We found no evidence of size biased sampling as group size and distances were uncorrelated in most of our surveys. Despite distance sampling being a fairly robust methodology, it can be sensitive to some data analysis strategies

    Recent distribution of Red-legged Partridge Alectoris rufa in Piedmont (North Western Italy): signs of recent spreading.

    The red-legged partridge Alectoris rufa in Piedmont (NW Italy) is historically limited to the hilly and low-mountain areas of the southern half of the region, in particular lying in the Langhe and the Apennines on the Ligurian border, in the districts of Cuneo, Asti and Alessandria. In the Cuneo district, on the Maritime Alps, hybrid populations with Alectoris graeca were also known. The distribution of the species has been mapped in some occasions with the \u201cAtlases\u201d projects of the GPSO (Gruppo Piemontese Studi Ornitologici) and special enquiries. On this occasion we tried to update the geographical distribution of the species using data conferred by bird-watchers on www.regione.piemonte.it/aves/, managed by the GPSO, enquiries among hunters\u2019 organizations and specific field researches. The resulting distribution is shown on a 10 km square grid. The species shows signs of distribution dynamism, with the occupation of some lowland areas, where it was totally absent until the \u201890s. A little range expansion is noticeable also in the Western Monferrato. The situation seems to be more stable (or even declining) in the Langhe area and the species is now disappeared from the alpine border. In general we are seeing an areal contraction or density reduction on hills and mountains and an extension on lowlands. The observed changes seem to be attributable mainly to environmental and climate changes
