AAOmega spectroscopy of 29 351 stars in fields centered on ten Galactic globular clusters
Galactic globular clusters have been pivotal in our understanding of many
astrophysical phenomena. Here we publish the extracted stellar parameters from
a recent large spectroscopic survey of ten globular clusters. A brief review of
the project is also presented. Stellar parameters have been extracted from
individual stellar spectra using both a modified version of the Radial Velocity
Experiment (RAVE) pipeline and a pipeline based on the parameter estimation
method of RAVE. We publish here all parameters extracted from both pipelines.
We calibrate the metallicity and convert this to [Fe/H] for each star and,
furthermore, we compare the velocities and velocity dispersions of the Galactic
stars in each field to the Besan\c{c}on Galaxy model. We find that the model
does not correspond well with the data, indicating that the model is probably

Major Substructure in the M31 Outer Halo: the South-West Cloud
We undertake the first detailed analysis of the stellar population and
spatial properties of a diffuse substructure in the outer halo of M31. The
South-West Cloud lies at a projected distance of ~100 kpc from the centre of
M31, and extends for at least ~50 kpc in projection. We use Pan-Andromeda
Archaeological Survey photometry of red giant branch stars to determine a
distance to the South-West Cloud of 793 +/- 45 kpc. The metallicity of the
cloud is found to be [Fe/H] = -1.3 +/- 0.1. This is consistent with the
coincident globular clusters PAndAS-7 and PAndAS-8, which have metallicities
determined using an independent technique of [Fe/H] = -1.35 +/- 0.15. We
measure a brightness for the Cloud of M_V = -12.1 mag; this is ~75 per cent of
the luminosity implied by the luminosity-metallicity relation. Under the
assumption that the South-West Cloud is the visible remnant of an accreted
dwarf satellite, this suggests that the progenitor object was amongst M31's
brightest dwarf galaxies prior to disruption.Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA
Mirror-Descent Methods in Mixed-Integer Convex Optimization
In this paper, we address the problem of minimizing a convex function f over
a convex set, with the extra constraint that some variables must be integer.
This problem, even when f is a piecewise linear function, is NP-hard. We study
an algorithmic approach to this problem, postponing its hardness to the
realization of an oracle. If this oracle can be realized in polynomial time,
then the problem can be solved in polynomial time as well. For problems with
two integer variables, we show that the oracle can be implemented efficiently,
that is, in O(ln(B)) approximate minimizations of f over the continuous
variables, where B is a known bound on the absolute value of the integer
variables.Our algorithm can be adapted to find the second best point of a
purely integer convex optimization problem in two dimensions, and more
generally its k-th best point. This observation allows us to formulate a
finite-time algorithm for mixed-integer convex optimization
SMASHing the LMC: A Tidally-induced Warp in the Outer LMC and a Large-scale Reddening Map
We present a study of the three-dimensional (3D) structure of the Large
Magellanic Cloud (LMC) using ~2.2 million red clump (RC) stars selected from
the Survey of the MAgellanic Stellar History. To correct for line-of-sight dust
extinction, the intrinsic RC color and magnitude and their radial dependence
are carefully measured by using internal nearly dust-free regions. These are
then used to construct an accurate 2D reddening map (165 square degrees with
~10 arcmin resolution) of the LMC disk and the 3D spatial distribution of RC
stars. An inclined disk model is fit to the 2D distance map yielding a best-fit
inclination angle i = 25.86(+0.73,-1.39) degrees with random errors of +\-0.19
degrees and line-of-nodes position angle theta = 149.23(+6.43,-8.35) degrees
with random errors of +/-0.49 degrees. These angles vary with galactic radius,
indicating that the LMC disk is warped and twisted likely due to the repeated
tidal interactions with the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). For the first time,
our data reveal a significant warp in the southwestern part of the outer disk
starting at rho ~ 7 degrees that departs from the defined LMC plane up to ~4
kpc toward the SMC, suggesting that it originated from a strong interaction
with the SMC. In addition, the inner disk encompassing the off-centered bar
appears to be tilted up to 5-15 degrees relative to the rest of the LMC disk.
These findings on the outer warp and the tilted bar are consistent with the
predictions from the Besla et al. simulation of a recent direct collision with

Errors in chromosome segregation during oogenesis and early embryogenesis
Errors in chromosome segregation occurring during human oogenesis and early embryogenesis are very common. Meiotic chromosome development during oogenesis is subdivided into three distinct phases. The crucial events, including meiotic chromosome pairing and recombination, take place from around 11 weeks until birth. Oogenesis is then arrested until ovulation, when the first meiotic division takes place, with the second meiotic division not completed until after fertilization. It is generally accepted that most aneuploid fetal conditions, such as trisomy 21 Down syndrome, are due to maternal chromosome segregation errors. The underlying reasons are not yet fully understood. It is also clear that superimposed on the maternal meiotic chromosome segregation errors, there are a large number of mitotic errors taking place post-zygotically during the first few cell divisions in the embryo. In this chapter, we summarise current knowledge of errors in chromosome segregation during oogenesis and early embryogenesis, with special reference to the clinical implications for successful assisted reproduction
VARIABLE STARS in the FIELD of the HYDRA II ULTRA-FAINT DWARF GALAXY
We report the discovery of one RR Lyrae star in the ultra-faint satellite galaxy Hydra II based on time series photometry in the g, r and i bands obtained with the Dark Energy Camera at Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory, Chile. The association of the RR Lyrae star discovered here with Hydra II is clear because is located at 42âł from the center of the dwarf, well within its half-light radius of 102âł. The RR Lyrae star has a mean magnitude of i= 21.30 Âą 0.04 which is too faint to be a field halo star. This magnitude translates to a heliocentric distance of 151 Âą 8 kpc for Hydra II; this value is âź13%larger than the estimate from the discovery paper based on the average magnitude of several blue horizontal branch star candidates. The new distance implies a slightly larger half-light radius of 76+12 -10pc and a brighter absolute magnitude of Mv = -5.1 Âą 0.3, which keeps this object within the realm of the dwarf galaxies. A comparison with other RR Lyrae stars in ultra-faint systems indicates similar pulsational properties among them, which are different to those found among halo field stars and those in the largest of the Milky Way satellites. We also report the discovery of 31 additional short period variables in the field of view (RR Lyrae, SX Phe, eclipsing binaries, and a likely anomalous cepheid) which are likely not related with Hydra I
Attacks by a piercing-sucking insect (Myzus persicae Sultzer) or a chewing insect (Leptinotarsa decemlineata Say) on potato plants (Solanum tuberosum L.) induce differential changes in volatile compound release and oxylipin synthesis
Plant defensive strategies bring into play blends of compounds dependent on the type of attacker and coming from different synthesis pathways. Interest in the field is mainly focused on volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and jasmonic acid (JA). By contrast, little is known about the oxidized polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), such as PUFA-hydroperoxides, PUFA-hydroxides, or PUFA-ketones. PUFA-hydroperoxides and their derivatives might be involved in stress response and show antimicrobial activities. Hydroperoxides are also precursors of JA and some volatile compounds. In this paper, the differential biochemical response of a plant against insects with distinct feeding behaviours is characterized not only in terms of VOC signature and JA profile but also in terms of their precursors synthesized through the lipoxygenase (LOX)-pathway at the early stage of the plant response. For this purpose, two leading pests of potato with distinct feeding behaviours were used: the Colorado Potato Beetle (Leptinotarsa decemlineata Say), a chewing herbivore, and the Green Peach Aphid (Myzus persicae Sulzer), a piercing-sucking insect. The volatile signatures identified clearly differ in function with the feeding behaviour of the attacker and the aphid, which causes the smaller damages, triggers the emission of a higher number of volatiles. In addition, 9-LOX products, which are usually associated with defence against pathogens, were exclusively activated by aphid attack. Furthermore, a correlation between volatiles and JA accumulation and the evolution of their precursors was determined. Target company cross-border effects in acquisitions into the UK
We analyse the abnormal returns to target shareholders in crossborder and domestic acquisitions of UK companies. The crossborder effect during the bid month is small (0.84%), although crossborder targets gain significantly more than domestic targets during the months surrounding the bid. We find no evidence for the level of abnormal returns in crossborder acquisitions to be associated with market access or exchange rate effects, and only limited support for an international diversification effect. However, the crossborder effect appears to be associated with significant payment effects, and there is no significant residual crossborder effect once various bid characteristics are controlled for
