    Stuck on the Rubicon? The Resonance of Ideas of Demoi-cracy in Media Debates

    Final draftTheories of demoi-cracy have recently gained salience in the continuous debate on a legitimate democratic Euro polity. Demoi-crats argue that multiple demoi can provide the European Union (EU) with its much sought-after democratic legitimacy. This article aims to offer an empirical contribution to the literature on the EU as a legitimate demoi-cracy. The media debates in the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and France were analysed in order to identify resonance of demoi-cratic ideas. Comparative analysis of legitimation statements in opinion articles in two quality newspapers per country shows that the debates often share a similar point of departure as demoi-cratic theories. However, the evaluation of this situation and the existing EU structures' legitimacy relies on either intergovernmental or supranational democratic idea(l)s. In conclusion, the analysis offers little evidence of ideas of demoi-cracy resonating in these Ă©lite debates on the EU's legitimacy except for a few potentially promising exceptions

    Popular Sovereignty in Europe

    This thesis proposes a realist analysis of the contemporary concept of popular sovereignty in its ability to make sense of the EU’s legitimacy. Drawing upon Bernard Williams’ political thought, a conception of legitimacy should make sense of hierarchical rule as a desirable civic order from within its own historical circumstances at the normative level. In addition, it should offer realistic guidance to political agents, meaning that its political fictions must therefore acquire a certain degree of practical resonance in order to act as heuristic tools. The modern concept of popular sovereignty sets appropriate criteria of legitimacy based upon the bonds created between citizens. Through a genealogical inquiry, I reconstruct conceptions of popular sovereignty which underpin defences of the EU’s output, democratic, and identitarian legitimacy from canonical arguments. These justifications of the state consider the people as beneficiaries of security and economic prosperity, as a self-governing demos, and as a cultural nation, respectively. I propose a realist vindication of this multi-faceted conception of popular sovereignty at the normative level, because these different conceptions complement one another in making sense of the sovereign state’s legitimacy. The thesis then discusses how the political fictions of the people could simultaneously make sense within the European polity. In short, the citizens of Europe’s polities have become part of the normative systems which create judicial-economic, civic-democratic, and socio-cultural relationships within the territorial borders of the European states. In addition, the centralisation of decision-making power and implementation resources has given plausibility to the political fiction of sovereignty. European integration has, however, resulted in a reconfiguration of these normative systems and restructuring of power into a two-tier political order. In this novel context, a realist vindication of the contemporary conception of popular sovereignty is no longer possible. The thesis concludes by suggesting that a demoicratic reconceptualisation of popular sovereignty offers a constructive way to make sense of the EU’s legitimacy.Politics DepartmentPrins Bernard Cultuurfond

    Response of a ferrofluid to traveling-stripe forcing

    We observe the dynamics of waves propagating on the surface of a ferrofluid under the influence of a spatially and temporarily modulated field. In particular, we excite plane waves by a travelling lamellar modulation of the magnetization. By this external driving both the wavelength and the propagation velocity of the waves can be controlled. The amplitude of the excited waves exhibits a resonance phenomenon similar to that of a forced harmonic oscillator. Its analysis reveals the dispersion relation of the free surface waves, from which the critical magnetic field for the onset of the Rosensweig instability can be extrapolated

    Interoperability for the design and construction industry through semantic web technology

    The domain of architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) has experienced significant improvements with the advent of building information modelling (BIM) applications, which allow AEC specialists to model all information concerning a building design into one three-dimensional building model. Much of these improvements are however generated by the mere availability of such an environment, whereas many more improvements were expected by achieving an appropriate interoperability of information. We are investigating why such an interoperability is not reached fully and consider the semantic web as an alternative approach to reach the targeted interoperability. In this paper, an AEC description framework based on semantic web technology is presented and compared to the BIM approach, after which we indicate how it might solve the issue of interoperability more appropriately. Our evaluation of this investigation indicates the semantic web approach as a valid alternative approach, although considerably more research is needed to show it capable of providing the targeted interoperability of information in the AEC domain

    High-resolution ab initio three-dimensional X-ray diffraction microscopy

    Coherent X-ray diffraction microscopy is a method of imaging non-periodic isolated objects at resolutions only limited, in principle, by the largest scattering angles recorded. We demonstrate X-ray diffraction imaging with high resolution in all three dimensions, as determined by a quantitative analysis of the reconstructed volume images. These images are retrieved from the 3D diffraction data using no a priori knowledge about the shape or composition of the object, which has never before been demonstrated on a non-periodic object. We also construct 2D images of thick objects with infinite depth of focus (without loss of transverse spatial resolution). These methods can be used to image biological and materials science samples at high resolution using X-ray undulator radiation, and establishes the techniques to be used in atomic-resolution ultrafast imaging at X-ray free-electron laser sources.Comment: 22 pages, 11 figures, submitte

    The Fourier inversion of phased coherent diffraction patterns offers images without the resolution and depth-of-focus limitations of lens-based tomographic systems. We report on our recent experimental images inverted using recent developments in phase retrieval algorithms, and summarize efforts that led to these accomplishments. These include ab-initio reconstruction of a two-dimensional test pattern, infinite depth of focus image of a thick object, and its high-resolution (~10 nm resolution) three-dimensional image.     The ionized and hot gas in M17 SW: SOFIA/GREAT THz observations of [C II] and 12CO J=13-12

    With new THz maps that cover an area of ~3.3x2.1 pc^2 we probe the spatial distribution and association of the ionized, neutral and molecular gas components in the M17 SW nebula. We used the dual band receiver GREAT on board the SOFIA airborne telescope to obtain a 5'.7x3'.7 map of the 12CO J=13-12 transition and the [C II] 158 um fine-structure line in M17 SW and compare the spectroscopically resolved maps with corresponding ground-based data for low- and mid-J CO and [C I] emission. For the first time SOFIA/GREAT allow us to compare velocity-resolved [C II] emission maps with molecular tracers. We see a large part of the [C II] emission, both spatially and in velocity, that is completely non-associated with the other tracers of photon-dominated regions (PDR). Only particular narrow channel maps of the velocity-resolved [C II] spectra show a correlation between the different gas components, which is not seen at all in the integrated intensity maps. These show different morphology in all lines but give hardly any information on the origin of the emission. The [C II] 158 um emission extends for more than 2 pc into the M17 SW molecular cloud and its line profile covers a broader velocity range than the 12CO J=13-12 and [C I] emissions, which we interpret as several clumps and layers of ionized carbon gas within the telescope beam. The high-J CO emission emerges from a dense region between the ionized and neutral carbon emissions, indicating the presence of high-density clumps that allow the fast formation of hot CO in the irradiated complex structure of M17 SW.     Comprehensive analysis of MHC class I genes from the U-, S-, and Z-lineages in Atlantic salmon

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>We have previously sequenced more than 500 kb of the duplicated MHC class I regions in Atlantic salmon. In the IA region we identified the loci for the MHC class I gene <it>Sasa-UBA </it>in addition to a soluble MHC class I molecule, <it>Sasa-ULA</it>. A pseudolocus for <it>Sasa-UCA </it>was identified in the nonclassical IB region. Both regions contained genes for antigen presentation, as wells as orthologues to other genes residing in the human MHC region.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The genomic localisation of two MHC class I lineages (Z and S) has been resolved. 7 BACs were sequenced using a combination of standard Sanger and 454 sequencing. The new sequence data extended the IA region with 150 kb identifying the location of one Z-lineage locus, <it>ZAA</it>. The IB region was extended with 350 kb including three new Z-lineage loci, <it>ZBA</it>, <it>ZCA </it>and <it>ZDA </it>in addition to a <it>UGA </it>locus. An allelic version of the IB region contained a functional <it>UDA </it>locus in addition to the <it>UCA </it>pseudolocus. Additionally a BAC harbouring two MHC class I genes (UHA) was placed on linkage group 14, while a BAC containing the S-lineage locus <it>SAA </it>(previously known as <it>UAA</it>) was placed on LG10. Gene expression studies showed limited expression range for all class I genes with exception of <it>UBA </it>being dominantly expressed in gut, spleen and gills, and <it>ZAA </it>with high expression in blood.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Here we describe the genomic organization of MHC class I loci from the U-, Z-, and S-lineages in Atlantic salmon. Nine of the described class I genes are located in the extension of the duplicated IA and IB regions, while three class I genes are found on two separate linkage groups. The gene organization of the two regions indicates that the IB region is evolving at a different pace than the IA region. Expression profiling, polymorphic content, peptide binding properties and phylogenetic relationship show that Atlantic salmon has only one MHC class Ia gene (<it>UBA</it>), in addition to a multitude of nonclassical MHC class I genes from the U-, S- and Z-lineages.</p

    The inversion of a diffraction pattern offers aberration-free diffraction-limited 3D images without the resolution and depth-of-field limitations of lens-based tomographic systems, the only limitation being radiation damage.
