Derived Subgroups of Fixed Points in Profinite Groups

The main result of this paper is the following theorem. Let q be a prime, A an elementary abelian group of order q^3. Suppose that A acts as a coprime group of automorphisms on a profinite group G in such a manner that C_G(a)' is periodic for each nontrivial element a in A. Then G' is locally finite.Comment: To appear in Glasgow Mathematical Journal (2011). 11 page

Hint for axial-vector contact interactions in the data on e+e- -> e+e-(gamma) at centre-of-mass energies 192-208 GeV

For the first time the experiments ALEPH, DELPHI, L3 and OPAL have presented preliminary results for fermion-pair production in e+e- collisions on the full data set above the Z pole. A combined analysis of the Bhabha scattering measurements is performed to search for effects of contact interactions. In the case of two axial-vector (AA) currents the best fit to the data is 2.6 standard deviations away from the Standard Model expectation, corresponding to an energy scale Λ=10.31.6+2.8\Lambda = 10.3^{+2.8}_{-1.6} TeV for contact interactions. For other models no statistically significant deviations are observed, and the data are used to set lower limits at 95 % confidence level on the contact interaction scales ranging from 8.2 to 21.3 TeV, depending on the helicity structure.Comment: 6 pages, 1 table, 3 figure

Search for TeV Strings and New Phenomena in Bhabha Scattering at LEP2

A combined analysis of the data on Bhabha scattering at centre-of-mass energies 183 and 189 GeV from the LEP experiments ALEPH, L3 and OPAL is performed to search for effects of TeV strings in quantum gravity models with large extra dimensions. No statistically significant deviations from the Standard Model expectations are observed and lower limit on the string scale M_S = 0.631 TeV at 95 % confidence level is derived. The data are used to set lower limits on the scale of contact interactions ranging from 4.2 to 16.2 TeV depending on the model. In a complementary analysis we derive an upper limit on the electron size of 2.8 x 10^{-19} m at 95 % confidence level.Comment: 10 pages, 1 table, 3 figure

Composite Scalars at LEP: Constraining Technicolor Theories

LEPI and LEPII data can be used to constrain technicolor models with light, neutral pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone bosons, Pa. We use published limits on branching ratios and cross sections for final states with photons, large missing energy, jet pairs, and b bbar pairs to constrain the anomalous Pa Z0 Z0, Pa Z0 photon, and Pa photon photon couplings. From these results, we derive bounds on the size of the technicolor gauge group and the number of technifermion doublets in models such as Low-scale Technicolor.Comment: 27 pages (including title page), 15 figures, 6 tables. version 2: In addressing PRD referee comments, we have significantly expanded our manuscript, to include detailed discussion of limits from LEP II data, as well as expanding the number or specific models to which we apply our results. As a result, we have changed the title from "Z0 decays to composite scalars: constraining technicolor theories

Probing the Higgs Field Using Massive Particles as Sources and Detectors

In the Standard Model, all massive elementary particles acquire their masses by coupling to a background Higgs field with a non-zero vacuum expectation value. What is often overlooked is that each massive particle is also a source of the Higgs field. A given particle can in principle shift the mass of a neighboring particle. The mass shift effect goes beyond the usual perturbative Feynman diagram calculations which implicitly assume that the mass of each particle is rigidly fixed. Local mass shifts offer a unique handle on Higgs physics since they do not require the production of on-shell Higgs bosons. We provide theoretical estimates showing that the mass shift effect can be large and measurable, especially near pair threshold, at both the Tevatron and the LHC.Comment: 6 pages, no figures; Version 2 corrects some typographical errors of factors of 2 in equations 14, 17, 18 and 19 (all of the same origin) and mentions a linear collider as an interesting place to test the results of this pape

Coil embolization as an alternative endovascular approach for ruptured superficial femoral artery aneurysms

Purpose: True aneurysms of the superficial femoral artery (SFAA) are rare and, the endovascular approach using covered stents has gained more popularity. We report an endovascular alternative using embolization coils for treatment of a ruptured SFAA. Case description: An 88-old male admitted for a ruptured true SFAA (67×52mm in diameter and 70mm in length) presenting with painful mass pulsating in the proximal third of the left thigh. His surgical history consisted of an infrarenal abdominal aneurysm treated by open surgery and an ipsilateral popliteal aneurysm treated with prosthetic bypass by a medial approach; this was revealed to be occluded at the CT scan evaluation. The patient was asymptomatic for limb ischaemia, therefore we decided to perform embolization of the SFA with coils (MReye®Embolization Coil, Cook Medical, Bloomington,USA). Under local anaesthesia, via a 5-Fr sheath and an antegrade approach, coils were deployed first at the distal neck of the SFAA and then to its proximal neck. On the angiogram, complete aneurysm sac thrombosis with no leaks was achieved. At 6-month follow-up, the SFAA remained occluded, and the patient had not developed any sign of limb ischaemia. Conclusion: Coil embolization of SFAA in selected cases represents a feasible and safe endovascular alternative

Consequences of t-channel unitarity for the interaction of real and virtual photons at high energies

    Get PDF
We analyze the consequences of t-channel unitarity for photon cross sections and show what assumptions are necessary to allow for the existence of new singularities at Q2=0 Q^{2}=0 for the γp \gamma p and γγ \gamma \gamma total cross sections. For virtual photons, such singularities can in general be present, but we show that, apart from the perturbative singularity associated with γγqqˉ \gamma ^{*}\gamma ^{*}\to q\bar q , no new ingredient is needed to reproduce the data from LEP and HERA, in the Regge region.Comment: 10 pages, LaTeX2e with kluwer.sty, 7 figures. Analytic Perturbation Theory: A New Approach to the Analytic Continuation of the Strong Coupling Constant αS\alpha_S into the Timelike Region

The renormalization group applied to perturbation theory is ordinarily used to define the running coupling constant in the spacelike region. However, to describe processes with timelike momenta transfers, it is important to have a self-consistent determination of the running coupling constant in the timelike region. The technique called analytic perturbation theory (APT) allows a consistent determination of this running coupling constant. The results are found to disagree significantly with those obtained in the standard perturbative approach. Comparison between the standard approach and APT is carried out to two loops, and threshold matching in APT is applied in the timelike region.Comment: 16 pages, REVTeX, 7 postscript figure
