Ferroelectric Dynamics in the Perovskite Relaxor PMN
We review results obtained from recent neutron scattering studies of the
lead-oxide class of perovskite relaxors PMN and PZN. A ferroelectric soft mode
has been identified in PMN at 1100 K that becomes overdamped near 620 K. This
is the same temperature at which polar nanoregions (PNR) begin to form, denoted
by Td, and suggests that a direct connection exists between the soft mode and
the PNR. The appearance of diffuse scattering intensity at Td reported by
Naberezhnov et al. lends further support to this picture. At lower temperature
the soft mode in PMN reappears close to Tc = 213 K (defined only for E > Ec).
These results are provocative because the dynamics below Tc are characteristic
of an ordered ferroelectric state, yet they occur in a system that remains
cubic on average at all temperatures. We discuss a coupled-mode model that
successfully describes these data as well as those from earlier lattice

Systematic Study of Short Range Antiferromagnetic Order and The Spin-Glass State in Lightly Doped La2-xSrxCuO4
Systematic measurements of the magnetic susceptibility were performed on
single crystals of lightly doped La2-xSrxCuO4 (x=0.03, 0.04 and 0.05). For all
samples the temperature dependence of the in-plane magnetic susceptibility
shows typical spin-glass features with spin-glass transition temperatures Tg of
6.3K, 5.5K and 5.0K for x=0.03, 0.04 and 0.05, respectively. The canonical
spin-glass order parameter extracted from the in-plane susceptibility of all
the samples follows a universal scaling curve. On the other hand, the
out-of-plane magnetic susceptibility deviates from Curie law below a
temperature Tdv, higher than Tg. Comparing with previous neutron scattering
results with an instrumental energy resolution of 0.25 meV from Wakimoto et
al., the x-dependence of Tdv is qualitatively the same as that of Tel, the
temperature below which the elastic magnetic scattering develops around (pi,
pi). Thus, a revised magnetic phase diagram in the lightly doped region of
La2-xSrxCuO4 is proposed. The Curie constants calculated from the in-plane
susceptibility are independent of the Sr concentration. On the basis of the
cluster spin-glass model, this fact might reflect an inhomogeneous distribution
of doped holes in the CuO2 plane, such as in a stripe structure.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure
Static magnetic correlations near the insulating-superconducting phase boundary in LaSrCuO
An elastic neutron scattering study has been performed on several single
crystals of LaSrCuO for {\it x} near the lower critical
concentration {\it x} for superconductivity. % In the insulating
spin-glass phase ({\it x} = 0.04 and 0.053), the previously reported
one-dimensional spin modulation along the orthorhombic {\it b}-axis is
confirmed. % Just inside the superconducting phase ({\it x} = 0.06), however,
two pairs of incommensurate magnetic peaks are additionally observed
corresponding to the spin modulation parallel to the tetragonal axes. % These
two types of spin modulations with similar incommensurabilities coexist near
the boundary. % The peak-width along spin-modulation direction
exhibits an anomalous maximum in the superconducting phase near {\it x},
where the incommensurability monotonically increases upon doping
across the phase boundary. % These results are discussed in connection with the

Charge-transfer exciton in La2CuO4 probed with resonant inelastic x-ray scattering
We report a high-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering study of
La2CuO4. A number of spectral features are identified that were not clearly
visible in earlier lower-resolution data. The momentum dependence of the
spectral weight and the dispersion of the lowest energy excitation across the
insulating gap have been measured in detail. The temperature dependence of the
spectral features was also examined. The observed charge transfer edge shift,
along with the low dispersion of the first charge transfer excitation are
attributed to the lattice motion being coupled to the electronic system. In
addition, we observe a dispersionless feature at 1.8 eV, which is associated
with a d-d crystal field excitation.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Field-induced transition between magnetically disordered and ordered phases in underdoped La(2-x)SrxCuO4
We report the observation of a magnetic-field-induced transition between
magnetically disordered and ordered phases in slightly under-doped
La(2-x)SrxCuO4 with x=0.144. Static incommensurate spin-density-wave order is
induced above a critical field of about 3 T, as measured by elastic neutron
scattering. Our results allow us to constrain the location of a quantum

Distribution of satellite galaxies in high redshift groups
We use galaxy groups at redshifts between 0.4 and 1.0 selected from the Great
Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS) to study the color-morphological
properties of satellite galaxies, and investigate possible alignment between
the distribution of the satellites and the orientation of their central galaxy.
We confirm the bimodal color and morphological type distribution for satellite
galaxies at this redshift range: the red and blue classes corresponds to the
early and late morphological types respectively, and the early-type satellites
are on average brighter than the late-type ones. Furthermore, there is a {\it
morphological conformity} between the central and satellite galaxies: the
fraction of early-type satellites in groups with an early-type central is
higher than those with a late-type central galaxy. This effect is stronger at
smaller separations from the central galaxy. We find a marginally significant
signal of alignment between the major axis of the early-type central galaxy and
its satellite system, while for the late-type centrals no significant alignment
signal is found. We discuss the alignment signal in the context of shape

Neutron Scattering and magnetization studies of BaCuCoOCl: A decorated two-dimensional antiferromagnet
BaCuOCl has two inter-penetrating square Cu sublattices, one
with square root 2 times the in-plane spacing of the other. Isotropic magnetic
interactions between the two sublattices are completely frustrated. Quantum
fluctuations resolve the intrinsic degeneracy in the ordering direction of the
more weakly coupled sublattice in favor of collinear ordering. We present
neutron scattering and magnetization studies of the magnetic structure when the
Cu ions are substituted with Co. The Co spins create new magnetic interactions
between the two sublattices. The ordering behavior of both Cu sublattices is
retained largely unmodified. Between the phase transitions of the two
sublattices spin-glass behavior is observed. Magnetization results show a
strong enhancement to the ferromagnetic aspect of the magnetic structure. The
combination of glassy behavior and large moments strongly suggest that the Co
moments induce the formation of local canted states.Comment: 4 figure
Neutron scattering study of soft phonons and diffuse scattering in insulating LaSrCuO
Soft phonons and diffuse scattering in insulating LaSrCuO
() have been studied by the neutron scattering technique. The X-point
phonon softens from high temperature towards the structural transition
temperature K, and the Z-point phonon softens again below 200 K.
The Z-point phonon softening persists to low temperature, in contrast to the
behavior observed in the superconducting compound, in which the
Z-point phonon hardens below . The diffuse scattering associated with the
structural phase transition at 410 K appears at commensurate positions. These
results highlight interesting differences between superconducting and

Poisson structures on the center of the elliptic algebra A_{p,q}(sl(2)_c)
It is shown that the elliptic algebra A_{p,q}(sl(2)_c) has a non trivial
center at the critical level , generalizing the result of Reshetikhin and
Semenov-Tian-Shansky for trigonometric algebras. A family of Poisson structures
