Medical imaging analysis with artificial neural networks

    Get PDF
Given that neural networks have been widely reported in the research community of medical imaging, we provide a focused literature survey on recent neural network developments in computer-aided diagnosis, medical image segmentation and edge detection towards visual content analysis, and medical image registration for its pre-processing and post-processing, with the aims of increasing awareness of how neural networks can be applied to these areas and to provide a foundation for further research and practical development. Representative techniques and algorithms are explained in detail to provide inspiring examples illustrating: (i) how a known neural network with fixed structure and training procedure could be applied to resolve a medical imaging problem; (ii) how medical images could be analysed, processed, and characterised by neural networks; and (iii) how neural networks could be expanded further to resolve problems relevant to medical imaging. In the concluding section, a highlight of comparisons among many neural network applications is included to provide a global view on computational intelligence with neural networks in medical imaging

    Light Field Blind Motion Deblurring

We study the problem of deblurring light fields of general 3D scenes captured under 3D camera motion and present both theoretical and practical contributions. By analyzing the motion-blurred light field in the primal and Fourier domains, we develop intuition into the effects of camera motion on the light field, show the advantages of capturing a 4D light field instead of a conventional 2D image for motion deblurring, and derive simple methods of motion deblurring in certain cases. We then present an algorithm to blindly deblur light fields of general scenes without any estimation of scene geometry, and demonstrate that we can recover both the sharp light field and the 3D camera motion path of real and synthetically-blurred light fields.Comment: To be presented at CVPR 201

Reynolds Pressure and Relaxation in a Sheared Granular System

We describe experiments that probe the evolution of shear jammed states, occurring for packing fractions ϕSϕϕJ\phi_S \leq \phi \leq \phi_J, for frictional granular disks, where above ϕJ\phi_J there are no stress-free static states. We use a novel shear apparatus that avoids the formation of inhomogeneities known as shear bands. This fixed ϕ\phi system exhibits coupling between the shear strain, γ\gamma, and the pressure, PP, which we characterize by the `Reynolds pressure', and a `Reynolds coefficient', R(ϕ)=(2P/γ2)/2R(\phi) = (\partial ^2 P/\partial \gamma ^2)/2. RR depends only on ϕ\phi, and diverges as R(ϕcϕ)αR \sim (\phi_c - \phi)^{\alpha}, where ϕcϕJ\phi_c \simeq \phi_J, and α3.3\alpha \simeq -3.3. Under cyclic shear, this system evolves logarithmically slowly towards limit cycle dynamics, which we characterize in terms of pressure relaxation at cycle nn: ΔPβln(n/n0)\Delta P \simeq -\beta \ln(n/n_0). β\beta depends only on the shear cycle amplitude, suggesting an activated process where β\beta plays a temperature-like role.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

Electronic states and pairing symmetry in the two-dimensional 16 band d-p model for iron-based superconductor

The electronic states of the FeAs plane in iron-based superconductors are investigated on the basis of the two-dimensional 16-band d-p model, where the tight-binding parameters are determined so as to fit the band structure obtained by the density functional calculation for LaFeAsO. The model includes the Coulomb interaction on a Fe site: the intra- and inter-orbital direct terms U and U', the exchange coupling J and the pair-transfer J'. Within the random phase approximation (RPA), we discuss the pairing symmetry of possible superconducting states including s-wave and d-wave pairing on the U'-J plane.Comment: 2 pages, 4 figures; Proceedings of the Int.
