    Field Dependent Phase Diagram of the Quantum Spin Chain (CH3)2NH2CuCl3

    Although (CH3)2NH2CuCl3 (MCCL) was first examined in the 1930's [1], there are open questions regarding the magnetic dimensionality and nature of the magnetic properties. MCCL is proposed to be a S=1/2 alternating ferromagnetic antiferromagnetic spin chain alternating along the crystalline a-axis [2,3]. Proposed ferromagnetic (JFM =1.3 meV) and antiferromagnetic (JAFM =1.1 meV) exchange constants make this system particularly interesting for experimental study. Because JFM and JAFM are nearly identical, the system should show competing behavior between S=1/2 (AFM) and S=1(FM) effects. We report low temperature magnetic field dependent susceptibility, chi(H), and specific heat, Cp, of MCCL. These provide an initial magnetic-field versus temperature phase diagram. A zero-field phase transition consistent with long range magnetic order is observed at T=0.9 K. The transition temperature can be reduced via application of a magnetic field. We also present comparisons to a FM/AFM dimer model that accounts for chi(T,H=0) and Cp(H,T).Comment: 2 pages, 1 figure included in text.     Inelastic neutron scattering profiles of spin waves in the dilute quasi-one-dimensional Ising-like antiferromagnet CsCo_{0.83}Mg_{0.17}Br_3 have been investigated. Calculations of S^{xx}(Q,omega), based on an effective spin Hamiltonian, accurately describe the experimental spin wave spectrum of the 2J mode. The Q dependence of the energy of this spin wave mode follows the analytical prediction omega_{xx}(Q)=(2J)(1-5epsilon^{2}cos^{2}Qa+2epsilon^{2})^{1/2}, calculated by Ishimura and Shiba using perturbation theory.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figure

    XUV Opacity of Aluminum between the Cold-Solid to Warm-Plasma Transition

    We present calculations of the free-free XUV opacity of warm, solid-density aluminum at photon energies between the plasma frequency at 15 eV and the L-edge at 73 eV, using both density functional theory combined with molecular dynamics and a semi-analytical model in the RPA framework with the inclusion of local field corrections. As the temperature is increased from room temperature to 10 eV, with the ion and electron temperatures equal, we calculate an increase in the opacity in the range over which the degree of ionization is constant. The effect is less pronounced if only the electron temperature is allowed to increase. The physical significance of these increases is discussed in terms of intense XUV-laser matter interactions on both femtosecond and picosecond time-scales.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure

    The impact of unemployment insurance savings accounts on subsequent employment quality

    The introduction of unemployment insurance savings accounts (UISA) in Chile in October 2002 led to more comprehensive unemployment protection while decreasing the opportunity cost of job change. Using a difference-in-differences approach this paper examines whether the introduction of UISA had an impact on the dierences in subsequent wages and contract types of (i) workers changing into a new employment, and (ii) workers experiencing a period of unemployment before re-entering the labour market. The analysis uses longitudinal social protection data and is the first to empirically investigate the effect of UISA on subsequent employment quality. The findings suggest that the introduction of the UISA scheme had a small negative effect on the wage difference of formal private sector workers, but no effect on contract types. Using informal private sector workers as a control group, only workers of the treatment group experiencing a period of unemployment show statistically different and positive results in wage growth. The robustness analysis, using an alternative "as if" introductory date and a different control group, largely supports these findings. The paper therefore concludes that the effect of UISA affiliation on wage growth is slightly negative, but positive compared to a control group for workers experiencing a period of unemployment, leading to a marginally higher employment quality for this latter group

    Rational development and application of biomarkers in the field of autoimmunity: A conceptual framework guiding clinicians and researchers.

    Clear guidance is needed in the development and implementation of laboratory biomarkers in medicine. So far, no standardized phased approach is established that would pilot researchers and clinicians in this process. This leads to often incompletely validated biomarkers, which can bear the consequence of wrong applications, misinterpretation and inadequate management in the clinical context. In this conceptual article, we describe a stepwise approach to develop and comprehensively validate laboratory biomarkers. We will delineate basic steps including technical performance, pre-analytical issues, and biological variation, as well as advanced aspects of biomarker utility comprising interpretability, diagnostic and prognostic accuracy, and health-care outcomes. These aspects will be illustrated by using well-known examples from the field of immunology. The application of this conceptual framework will guide researchers in conducting meaningful projects to develop and evaluate biomarkers for the use in clinical practice. Furthermore, clinicians will be able to adequately interpret pre-clinical and clinical diagnostic literature and rationally apply biomarkers in clinical practice. Improvement in the implementation and application of biomarkers might relevantly change the management and outcomes of our patients for the better
