The precursors of infotainment? Debate and talk shows on Televisión Española (1980-1989)
The theory formulated to date indicates that political infotainment programs arrived in Spain in a widespread manner in the 1990s with the rise of private television channels. But were there spaces in public television that shared the traits of this novel television genre before that time? This article is aimed at analyzing debate and talk shows, as well as hybrid format shows combining both genres, broadcasted on Televisión Española (TVE-1 and TVE-2) during the ‘80s, in order to determine whether or not these programs present the emblematic style characteristic of infotainment. The methodology consists of a content analysis of a total of 31 television programs, each of which was viewed on the RTVE archive using different multimedia platforms. The results of this research reveal that Televisión Española incorporated into its debate shows, talk shows, and hybrid format shows, features typical of infotainment prior to the ‘90s. Among the most recurrent stylistic features of these programs are the tendency to dramatization, polemic and emotionality (achieved through different techniques and strategies), an increase of soft content, a greater presence of satire, humor and close-ups, and the use of music.
The UJI librarian robot
This paper describes the UJI Librarian Robot, a mobile manipulator that is able to autonomously locate a book in an ordinary library, and grasp it from a bookshelf, by using eye-in-hand stereo vision and force sensing. The robot is only provided with the book code, a library map and some knowledge about its logical structure and takes advantage of the spatio-temporal constraints and regularities of the environment by applying disparate techniques such as stereo vision, visual tracking, probabilistic matching, motion estimation, multisensor-based grasping, visual servoing and hybrid control, in such a way that it exhibits a robust and dependable performance. The system has been tested, and experimental results show how it is able to robustly locate and grasp a book in a reasonable time without human intervention
Structure and genetic relationships between serrana de Teruel breed and other cattle breeds reared in Spain
In this work we analyze by microsatellite markers the genetic diversity, structure and relationships of the indigenous endangered Serrana de Teruel cattle breed with different breeds reared in Spain. All loci were polymorphic and a total of 198 alleles were observed across loci, with a mean of 6.79. Observed and expected heterozygosities values shown the high variability of Serrana de Teruel breed with values of 0.67 and 0.68 respectively. The neighbour net based on Reynolds distances shown the close genetic relationship among Serrana de Teruel and the mountain Parda de Montaña and Pirenaica breeds. STRUCTURE results showed a 47.5% of correctly assigned individuals to Serrana de Teruel breed using a q>0.8 threshold. The admixed animals shown a clear influence of Parda de Montaña breed.
Mazabraud's síndrome is the association of a soft-tissue tumour, intramuscular myxonma and a bone tumour, fibrous dysplasia. We review the literature since Mazabraud, in 1957 described this syndrome. We report a 43 years male who consulted for a soft-time mass in the right thigh. He also had bone lesions in pelvis and right femur that were diagnosted of fibrous dysplasia. We made a biopsy of soft-tissue tumour and it was diagnosed of intramuscular myxom. The patient was operated and the mass was removed. Till now, there is no recurrence of the myxom and there is no malignant degeneration of the fibrous dysplasia
Analysis of microsatellite markers in a Cuban water buffalo breed
The aim of this Regional Research Communication was to validate a panel of 30 microsatellite markers recommended by FAO/ISAG for studies of biodiversity in cattle to improve the characterisation of Cuban buffalo populations. The water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) is an economically important livestock species. Therefore, research focused on the study of the genetic relationships among water buffalo populations is useful to support conservation decisions and to design breeding schemes. Twenty-eight of the 30 tested regions were amplified, one of which (ETH10) turned out to be monomorphic. A total of 143 alleles were observed in the Cuban water buffalo population. The average number of alleles per locus was 5·04. The number of alleles per polymorphic locus ranged from two (INRA 63 and MM12) to nine (ETH185). The observed and expected heterozygosity ranged from 0·108 (HAUT24) to 0·851 (CSSM66) and 0·104 (MM12) to 0·829(INRA32), respectively. The polymorphic information content (PIC) ranged from 0·097 (MM12) to 0·806 (INRA32), and the overall value for these markers was 0·482. Within the population, inbreeding estimates (F IS) was positive in 14 of the 30 loci analysed. This study thus highlights the usefulness of heterologous bovine microsatellite markers to assess the genetic variability in Cuban water buffalo breeds. Furthermore, the results can be utilised for future breeding strategies and conservation
Low-resolution spectroscopy and spectral energy distributions of selected sources towards sigma Orionis
Aims: We investigated in detail nine sources in the direction of the young
sigma Orionis cluster, which is considered a unique site for studying stellar
and substellar formation. The nine sources were selected because of some
peculiar properties, such as extremely red infrared colours or too strong
Halpha emission for their blue optical colours. Methods: We took high-quality,
low-resolution spectroscopy (R ~ 500) of the nine targets with ALFOSC at the
Nordic Optical Telescope. We also re-analyzed [24]-band photometry from
MIPS/Spitzer and compiled the best photometry available at the ViJHKs passbands
and the four IRAC/Spitzer channels for constructing accurate spectral energy
distributions covering from 0.55 to 24 mum. Results: The nine targets were
classified into: one Herbig Ae/Be star with a scatterer edge-on disc, two
G-type stars, one X-ray flaring, early-M, young star with chromospheric Halpha
emission, one very low-mass, accreting, young spectroscopic binary, two young
objects at the brown dwarf boundary with the characteristics of classical T
Tauri stars, and two emission-line galaxies, one undergoing star formation, and
another one whose spectral energy distribution is dominated by an active
galactic nucleus. Besides, we discover three infrared sources associated to
overdensities in a cold cloud in the cluster centre. Conclusions:
Low-resolution spectroscopy and spectral energy distributions are a vital tool
for measuring the physical properties and the evolution of young stars and
candidates in the sigma Orionis cluster.Comment: Accepted for publication in A&
Circular dichrosim in photoionization of H2 and D2
ABSTRACT: In this work, circular dichroism in H2 (D2) photoionization is studied in detail. We have selected several
photon energies for a case study: 19 eV for which only direct ionization to the 1s_g ionization channel is present, 27 eV where autoionization of Q1 doubly excited states takes place, and 32.5 eV for which autoionization from Q1 and doubly excited states and direct ionization to 1s_g and 2p_u channels strongly interfere. The latter case shows clear evidence of different behavior of the photoionization against radiation helicity
Increased circulating microRNAs miR-342-3p and miR-21-5p in natural sheep prion disease
Scrapie is a transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE), or prion disease, of sheep and goats. As no simple diagnostic tests are yet available to detect TSEs in vivo, easily accessible biomarkers could facilitate the eradication of scrapie agents from the food chain. To this end, we analysed by quantitative reverse transcription PCR a selected set of candidate microRNAs (miRNAs) from circulating blood plasma of naturally infected, classical scrapie sheep that demonstrated clear scrapie symptoms and pathology. Significant scrapie-associated increase was repeatedly found for miR-342-3p and miR-21-5p. This is the first demonstration, to our knowledge, of circulating miRNA alterations in any animal suffering from TSE. Genome-wide expression studies are warranted to investigate the true depth of miRNA alterations in naturally occurring TSEs, especially in presymptomatic animals, as the presented study demonstrates the potential feasibility of miRNAs as circulating TSE biomarkers
