Unpicking Motives to Purchase Locally-Produced Food: Analysis of Direct and Moderation Effects
Purpose This study investigates how attributes associated with local food (intrinsic product quality; local support) motivate purchase behaviour. Previous research assumes heterogeneity in consumer motivation, but this has never been formally assessed. As such, the influence of local food attributes in motivating product use is integrated into a model in which consumer values and personal characteristics/situational variables are specified as moderators. Design/methodology/approach Eight hypotheses are tested using data collected from a quota sample of respondents recruited via an online panel of 1223 shoppers. A three-stage analysis is employed using structural equation modelling (SEM). Moderation effects are tested using both latent interactions and multiple-group analysis. Findings Shoppers purchase local food more frequently as a consequence of local support rather than intrinsic product quality. Unpicking these relationships reveal that local support has an amplified effect when local identity is higher, and when the shopper is female or of an older age (55yrs+). Surprisingly, the influence of intrinsic product quality is equivalent by gender, age and location (rural/urban). Practical implications Marketers promoting locally produced foods should focus on both the intrinsic attributes of local food as well as the role it plays within the local community. The latter is more likely to be successful with communications aimed at women and older consumers. Originality/value With previous studies focusing on how local food attributes influence favourable consumer behaviours, the current study unpicks these relationships by examining heterogeneity in responses. This is the first study to concurrently use attributes, values and personal characteristics/situational variables in explaining shopping behaviour for local food
Rfam: updates to the RNA families database
Rfam is a collection of RNA sequence families, represented by multiple sequence alignments and covariance models (CMs). The primary aim of Rfam is to annotate new members of known RNA families on nucleotide sequences, particularly complete genomes, using sensitive BLAST filters in combination with CMs. A minority of families with a very broad taxonomic range (e.g. tRNA and rRNA) provide the majority of the sequence annotations, whilst the majority of Rfam families (e.g. snoRNAs and miRNAs) have a limited taxonomic range and provide a limited number of annotations. Understanding the UK hospital supply chain in an era of patient choice

Subsequently, the hospital system should become far more competitive with supply chains having to react to these changes as patient demand becomes less predictable. Using a qualitative case study methodology, hospital managers are interviewed on a range of issues. Views on the development of the hospital supply chain in different phases are derived, and are used to develop a map of the current hospital chain. The findings show hospital managers anticipating some significant changes to the hospital supply chain and its workings as Patient Choice expands. The research also maps the various aspects of the hospital supply chain as it moves through different operational phases and highlights underlying challenges and complexities. The hospital supply chain, as discussed and mapped in this research, is original work given there are no examples in the literature that provide holistic representations of hospital activity. At the end, specific recommendations are provided that will be of interest to service to managers, researchers, and policymakers
Genome-wide nucleosome map and cytosine methylation levels of an ancient human genome.
yesEpigenetic information is available from contemporary organisms, but is difficult to track back in evolutionary time.
Here, we show that genome-wide epigenetic information can be gathered directly from next-generation sequence reads of
DNA isolated from ancient remains. Using the genome sequence data generated from hair shafts of a 4000-yr-old Paleo-
Eskimo belonging to the Saqqaq culture, we generate the first ancient nucleosome map coupled with a genome-wide
survey of cytosine methylation levels. The validity of both nucleosome map and methylation levels were confirmed by the
recovery of the expected signals at promoter regions, exon/intron boundaries, and CTCF sites. The top-scoring nucleosome
calls revealed distinct DNA positioning biases, attesting to nucleotide-level accuracy. The ancient methylation
levels exhibited high conservation over time, clustering closely with modern hair tissues. Using ancient methylation
information, we estimated the age at death of the Saqqaq individual and illustrate how epigenetic information can be used
to infer ancient gene expression. Similar epigenetic signatures were found in other fossil material, such as 110,000- to
130,000-yr-old bones, supporting the contention that ancient epigenomic information can be reconstructed from a deep
past. Our findings lay the foundation for extracting epigenomic information from ancient samples, allowing shifts in
epialleles to be tracked through evolutionary time, as well as providing an original window into modern epigenomics
Transkingdom Networks: A Systems Biology Approach to Identify Causal Members of Host-Microbiota Interactions
Improvements in sequencing technologies and reduced experimental costs have
resulted in a vast number of studies generating high-throughput data. Although
the number of methods to analyze these "omics" data has also increased,
computational complexity and lack of documentation hinder researchers from
analyzing their high-throughput data to its true potential. In this chapter we
detail our data-driven, transkingdom network (TransNet) analysis protocol to
integrate and interrogate multi-omics data. This systems biology approach has
allowed us to successfully identify important causal relationships between
different taxonomic kingdoms (e.g. mammals and microbes) using diverse types of
data
Predicting RNA secondary structure by the comparative approach: how to select the homologous sequences
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The secondary structure of an RNA must be known before the relationship between its structure and function can be determined. One way to predict the secondary structure of an RNA is to identify covarying residues that maintain the pairings (Watson-Crick, Wobble and non-canonical pairings). This "comparative approach" consists of identifying mutations from homologous sequence alignments. The sequences must covary enough for compensatory mutations to be revealed, but comparison is difficult if they are too different. Thus the choice of homologous sequences is critical. While many possible combinations of homologous sequences may be used for prediction, only a few will give good structure predictions. This can be due to poor quality alignment in stems or to the variability of certain sequences. This problem of sequence selection is currently unsolved.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>This paper describes an algorithm, <it>SSCA</it>, which measures the suitability of sequences for the comparative approach. It is based on evolutionary models with structure constraints, particularly those on sequence variations and stem alignment. We propose three models, based on different constraints on sequence alignments. We show the results of the <it>SSCA </it>algorithm for predicting the secondary structure of several RNAs. <it>SSCA </it>enabled us to choose sets of homologous sequences that gave better predictions than arbitrarily chosen sets of homologous sequences.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p><it>SSCA </it>is an algorithm for selecting combinations of RNA homologous sequences suitable for secondary structure predictions with the comparative approach.</p
Seeing versus Doing: How Businesses Manage Tensions in Pursuit of Sustainability
Management of organizational tensions can facilitate the simultaneous advancement of economic, social, and environmental priorities. The approach is based on managers identifying and managing tensions between the three priorities, by employing one of the three strategic responses. Although recent work has provided a theoretical basis for such tension acknowledgment and management, there is a dearth of empirical studies. We interviewed 32 corporate sustainability managers across 25 forestry and wood-products organizations in Australia. Study participants were divided into two groups: (1) those considered effective at corporate sustainability and (2) a status-quo group. Contrary to current theory, our findings showed that acknowledgment of organizational tensions was widespread in the Australian forestry and wood-products industry and not limited to those managers who are effective at managing corporate sustainability. What differed was the degree to which managers did something about the perceived tensionsâwith the effective group more consistently acting to manage and resolve paradoxical scenarios. Our findings suggest that existing theoretical constructs of tension management may not adequately capture the individual-level complexity involved with managing tensions in practice
Sustainability, epistemology, ecocentric business and marketing strategy:ideology, reality and vision
This conceptual article examines the relationship between marketing and sustainability through the dual lenses of anthropocentric and ecocentric epistemology. Using the current anthropocentric epistemology and its associated dominant social paradigm, corporate ecological sustainability in commercial practice and business school research and teaching is difficult to achieve. However, adopting an ecocentric epistemology enables the development of an alternative business and marketing approach that places equal importance on nature, the planet, and ecological sustainability as the source of human and other species' well-being, as well as the source of all products and services. This article examines ecocentric, transformational business, and marketing strategies epistemologically, conceptually and practically and thereby proposes six ecocentric, transformational, strategic marketing universal premises as part of a vision of and solution to current global un-sustainability. Finally, this article outlines several opportunities for management practice and further research
