Some clinical applications of MTS-type TLD detectors
An important part of any QA programme for radiotherapy is verification, in vitro or in vivo, of calculated doses and dose distributions. We studied the clinical applicability of LiF:MG, Ti sintered TL detectors produced, as type MTS-N, by the Institute of Nuclear Physics in Kraków (INP). These are solid pellets of diam 4.5mm and 0.8mm thickness. The TL reader was a modified planchet-type 770A, also produced at the INP, with linear heating and computerised glow curve recording.For analysis of in vivo applications, we measured, in a water phantom, the dose at 14 points aroud the Standard gynaecological applicator of our SELECTRON LDR/MDR afterloading unit with Cs-137 pellets and compared the measured values with doses calculated at these points by the in-house developed SELKOM computer code used for planning gynaecological brachytherapy at the Centre of Oncology in Kraków (COK). Agreement to within 5% was stated.To demonstrate the applicability of MTS dosemeters in calibration dosimetry, we studied the accuracy, stability and reproducibility of a batch of 100 detectors over several readout cycles at doses ranging from 0.5 to 2.5 Gy. At 1 Gy, the relative standard deviation of Individual Calibration Factors (ICF) over six readout cycles did not exceed 2.5% indicating that the error of dose estimation using individual MTS detectors should not exceed 2%.In an intercomparison of Co-60 beams at the COK and at Louvain performed with MTS detectors agreement to within less than 0.5% was found with an accuracy better than 1%.This work is partly supported by KBN Polish State Committee for Scientific Research, Research Project No. 8T11E02908
Upper limits for a narrow resonance in the reaction p + p -> K^+ + (Lambda p)
The reaction pp -> K^+ + (Lambda p) has been measured at T_p = 1.953 GeV and
\Theta = 0 deg with a high missing mass resolution in order to study the Lambda
p final state interaction. Narrow S = -1 resonances predicted by bag model
calculations are not visible in the missing mass spectrum. Small structures
observed in a previous experiment are not confirmed. Upper limits for the
production cross section of a narrow resonance are deduced for missing masses
between 2058 and 2105 MeV/c^2.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure
Cross section of the reaction close to threshold
We have measured inclusive data on -meson production in collisions
at COSY J\"ulich close to the hyperon production threshold and determined the
hyperon-nucleon invariant mass spectra. The spectra were decomposed into three
parts: , and . The cross section for the
channel was found to be much smaller than a previous measurement in
that excess energy region. The data together with previous results at higher
energies are compatible with a phase space dependence.Comment: accepted by Phys. lett. B some typos correcte
High resolution study of the Lambda p final state interaction in the reaction p + p -> K+ + (Lambda p)
The reaction pp -> K+ + (Lambda p) was measured at Tp=1.953 GeV and Theta = 0
deg with a high missing mass resolution in order to study the Lambda p final
state interaction. The large final state enhancement near the Lambda p
threshold can be described using the standard Jost-function approach. The
singlet and triplet scattering lengths and effective ranges are deduced by
fitting simultaneously the Lambda p invariant mass spectrum and the total cross

New Particles from Belle
I report recent results on hidden charm spectroscopy from Belle. These
include: observation of a near-threshold enhancement in the omega-J/psi
invariant mass distribution for exclusive B-->K omega J/psi decays; evidence
for the decay X(3872)-->pi+pi-pi0 J/psi, where the pi+pi-pi0 invariant mass
distribution has a strong peak between 750 MeV and the kinematic limit of 775
MeV, suggesting that the process is dominated by the sub-threshold decay
X-->omega J/psi; and the observation of a peak near 3940 MeV in the J/psi
recoil mass spectrum for the inclusive continuum process e+e- --> J/psi X. The
results are based on a study of a 287 fb-1 sample of e+e- annihilation data
collected at center- of-mass energies around the Upsilon(4S) in the Belle

Detailed comparison of the pp -> \pi^+pn and pp -> \pi^+d reactions at 951 MeV
The positively charged pions produced in proton-proton collisions at a beam
momentum of 1640 MeV/c were measured in the forward direction with a high
resolution magnetic spectrograph. The missing mass distribution shows the bound
state (deuteron) clearly separated from the continuum. Despite the very
good resolution, there is no evidence for any significant production of the
system in the spin-singlet state. However, the cross section ratio is about twice as large as
that predicted from -wave final-state-interaction theory and it is suggested
that this is due to -state effects in the system.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figure
Structure–activity relationships of dinucleotides: Potent and selective agonists of P2Y receptors
Dinucleoside polyphosphates act as agonists on purinergic P2Y receptors to mediate a variety of cellular processes. Symmetrical, naturally occurring purine dinucleotides are found in most living cells and their actions are generally known. Unsymmetrical purine dinucleotides and all pyrimidine containing dinucleotides, however, are not as common and therefore their actions are not well understood. To carry out a thorough examination of the activities and specificities of these dinucleotides, a robust method of synthesis was developed to allow manipulation of either nucleoside of the dinucleotide as well as the phosphate chain lengths. Adenosine containing dinucleotides exhibit some level of activity on P2Y1 while uridine containing dinucleotides have some level of agonist response on P2Y2 and P2Y6. The length of the linking phosphate chain determines a different specificity; diphosphates are most accurately mimicked by dinucleoside triphosphates and triphosphates most resemble dinucleoside tetraphosphates. The pharmacological activities and relative metabolic stabilities of these dinucleotides are reported with their potential therapeutic applications being discussed
24. Validation of conformal radiotherapy treatment planning systems using an antro-pomorphic phantom and thermoluminescence dosimetry
Within the requirements of a Quality Assurance programme in a radiotherapy department, the ability of a treatment planning system (TPS) to accurately calculate dose distributions under realistic conditions encountered in radiotherapy (RT) should be validated. This may be accomplished by thermoluminescence (TL) dosimetry in simulated treatment of antropomorphic phantoms. In our radiotherapy department, several planning systems are used concurrently in 3D conformal treatment of larger volumes (with irregular fields obtained via individual shielding or multileaf collimation) and of very small volumes (stereotactic technique), by external megavoltage photon beams. Realistic 3D treatment plans were prepared using CadPlan, Theraplan and BrainLab TPS for treating volumes in an Alderson phantom, which was prepared for topometry (CT-scanned) and irradiated in fully simulated conditions of patient RT. Suitably selected TL detectors (some custom-produced for these measurements), were placed inside and around the treated volumes in the phantom. For every photon beam applied (Co-60, 6 MV or 9 MV) the TL detectors, individually corrected, were calibrated in a standard solid phantom against ionisation chamber dosimetry. For irradiation of larger volumes, standard MTS-N (LiF:Mg,Ti) detectors were used. For stereotactic irradiation of small volumes in the head (6 MV) special miniature thermoluminescent LiF:Mg,Ti and LiF:Mg,Cu,P were developed.
