Modelling hurricane track memory
It has been observed that hurricanes that are close in time often follow similar paths. If this can be shown to be statistically significant, it could have implications for how insurance premiums are calculated in areas of the US prone to hurricanes.
We developed two independent path distance metrics and while one suggested that sequential storms within a given hurricane season are more likely to follow each other than any other pair of storms within that season, this conclusion was not supported by the other metric.
Some considerations of how local and large scale air pressure gradients might affect hurricane paths were considered. A point vortex model in the presence of a steering flow field was developed and used to simulate the path of two time displaced vortices. In order for the vortices to follow each other they had to be relatively weak compared to the steering flow field. At realistic vortex strength, the trajectories became chaotic.
In summary, our metrics provided conflicting evidence towards the no- tion of hurricane track memory. A large-scale steering flow field did not appear to provide sufficient explanation for hurricanes following each other, though this does not preclude hurricane track memory being due to localised physical changes following a large storm
Microscopical characterization of carbon materials derived from coal and petroleum and their interaction phenomena in making steel electrodes, anodes and cathode blocks for the microscopy of Carbon Materials Working Group of the ICCP
This paper describes the evaluation of petrographic textures representing the structural organization of the organic matter derived from coal and petroleum and their interaction phenomena in the making of steel electrodes, anodes and cathode blocks. This work represents the results of the Microscopy of Carbon Materials Working Group in Commission III of the International Committee for Coal and Organic Petrology between the years 2009 and 2013. The round robin exercises were run on photomicrograph samples. For textural characterization of carbon materials the existing ASTM classification system for metallurgical coke was applied. These round robin exercises involved 15 active participants from 12 laboratories who were asked to assess the coal and petroleum based carbons and to identify the morphological differences, as optical texture (isotropic/anisotropic), optical type (punctiform, mosaic, fibre, ribbon, domain), and size. Four sets of digital black and white microphotographs comprising 151 photos containing 372 fields of different types of organic matter were examined. Based on the unique ability of carbon to form a wide range of textures, the results showed an increased number of carbon occurrences which have crucial role in the chosen industrial applications. The statistical method used to evaluate the results was based on the "raw agreement indices". It gave a new and original view on the analysts' opinion by not only counting the correct answers, but also all of the knowledge and experience of the participants. Comparative analyses of the average values of the level of overall agreement performed by each analyst in the exercises during 2009-2013 showed a great homogeneity in the results, the mean value being 90.36%, with a minimum value of 83% and a maximum value of 95%
Multiscale Coarse-Graining of the Protein Energy Landscape
A variety of coarse-grained (CG) models exists for simulation of proteins. An outstanding problem is the construction of a CG model with physically accurate conformational energetics rivaling all-atom force fields. In the present work, atomistic simulations of peptide folding and aggregation equilibria are force-matched using multiscale coarse-graining to develop and test a CG interaction potential of general utility for the simulation of proteins of arbitrary sequence. The reduced representation relies on multiple interaction sites to maintain the anisotropic packing and polarity of individual sidechains. CG energy landscapes computed from replica exchange simulations of the folding of Trpzip, Trp-cage and adenylate kinase resemble those of other reduced representations; non-native structures are observed with energies similar to those of the native state. The artifactual stabilization of misfolded states implies that non-native interactions play a deciding role in deviations from ideal funnel-like cooperative folding. The role of surface tension, backbone hydrogen bonding and the smooth pairwise CG landscape is discussed. Ab initio folding aside, the improved treatment of sidechain rotamers results in stability of the native state in constant temperature simulations of Trpzip, Trp-cage, and the open to closed conformational transition of adenylate kinase, illustrating the potential value of the CG force field for simulating protein complexes and transitions between well-defined structural states
Wpływ wodnych wyciągów z Galium aparine L. i Matricaria maritima Subsp. inodora (L.) Dostál na kiełkowanie żyta i pszenżyta ozimego
During the research, it was assessed how water extracts from Galium aparine
and Matricaria maritima subsp. inodora affect the germination energy and capacity, as
well as the length of the seedling root and the first leaf of the Dankowskie Zlote cultivar
of Secale cereale and of the Janko cultivar of Triticale rimpaui. The experiment was
conducted under laboratory conditions, with the use of Petri dishes. The influence of three
concentrations of water extracts prepared from the dry and fresh mass of the plant’s
above-ground parts was examined. Petri dishes watered with distilled water constituted
the control treatment. Water extracts prepared from the Matricaria maritima subsp.
inodora dry and fresh mass and Galium aparine fresh mass reduced the germination
capacity and energy of rye and triticale in direct proportion to the increase of
concentration. Higher concentrations of water extracts reduced, to a significantly larger
extent, the growth of the seedling roots of both species. Lowest-concentration water
extracts from the Matricaria maritima subsp. inodora dry and fresh mass and from the
Galium aparine fresh mass stimulated the growth of seedling root of the cereals under
study. Higher concentrations of water extracts prepared from the Galium aparine and the
Matricaria maritima subsp. inodora dry mass reduced, to a significantly larger extent, the
growth of the first leaf.W badaniach oceniono oddziaływanie wodnych wyciągów z suchej
i świeżej masy Galium aparine i Matricaria maritima subsp. inodora na energię,
zdolność kiełkowania oraz długość korzenia zarodkowego i pierwszego liścia Secale
cereale (odmiany Dańkowskie Złote) oraz Triticale rimpaui (odmiany Janko). Wyciągi
wodne sporządzone ze świeżej masy Galium aparine zmniejszały energię kiełkowania
żyta i pszenżyta ozimego wprost proporcjonalnie do wzrostu stężenia. Wyciągi wodne
o najwyższym stężeniu sporządzone z Galium aparine i Matricaria maritima subsp.
inodora obniżały zdolność kiełkowania ziarniaków, a także istotnie skracały długość
korzeni zarodkowych w porównaniu z pozostałymi badanymi roztworami oraz obiektem
kontrolnym. Wyciągi o najniższym stężeniu, z suchej i świeżej masy maruny oraz świeżej
masy przytulii, wyraźnie natomiast stymulowały wzrost korzeni zarodkowych badanych
gatunków zbóż. Testowane wodne wyciągi w istotnie większym stopniu skracały długość
korzeni zarodkowych żyta ozimego niż pszenżyta ozimego, co świadczy o różnej
wrażliwości badanych gatunków zbóż. Wyciągi ze świeżej masy przytulii i suchej masy
maruny, o najwyższym stężeniu, w największym stopniu skracały długość pierwszego
liścia w porównaniu z pozostałymi stężeniami i kontrolą
Wpływ wsiewek międzyplonowych na zachwaszczenie łanu jęczmienia jarego uprawianego w monokulturze
This paper presents the results of a study carried out in the years 2005–2007 in the Bezek Experimental Farm near the city of Chełm, Poland, on heavy mixed rendzina soil. The effect of intercropping, using red clover (cv. Dajana) and white clover (cv. Astra), on weed infestation of a spring barley crop was studied. The species composition of weeds in the spring barley crop changed to a small extent under the influence of the application of clover intercropping, whereas the population size of particular species showed large fluctuations. In the spring barley crop with the red clover intercrop, Sonchus arvensis occurred in greatest numbers among dicotyledonous weed species. In the barley crop with white clover and without intercrop, Viola arvensis and Sonchus arvensis were the dominant dicotyledonous species. Setaria pumila was the dominant monocotyledonous species in all the treatments. Intercropping using red and white clover clearly limited the growth and development of weeds. The red clover intercrop in the spring barley crop better reduced the infestation with dicotyledonous weeds and also significantly reduced the number of monocotyledonous weeds and the total number of weeds, whereas the white clover intercrop limited only the number of monocotyledonous weeds. The application of the herbicide Chwastox Extra 300 SL significantly reduced the fresh weight of weeds found in the spring barley crop. The presence of the intercrop resulted in different total numbers of weeds in particular treatments. Intercropping distinctly limited the occurrence of the following weed species: Sonchus arvensis, Fallopia convolvulus, Melandrium album, Amaranthus retroflexus, Veronica arvensis and Medicago lupulina. The investigated intercrop species also reduced the biomass of weeds. The application of the herbicide did not differentiate the number of monocotyledonous weeds, which resulted from the application of Chwastox Extra 300 SL that controls only dicotyledonous species.W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań przeprowadzonych
w latach 2005–2007 w Gospodarstwie
Doświadczalnym Bezek niedaleko Chełma, na ciężkiej
rędzinie mieszanej. Badano wpływ wsiewek międzyplonowych
w postaci koniczyny czerwonej odmiana
‘Dajana’ i koniczyny białej odmiana ‘Astra’ na zachwaszczenie
łanu jęczmienia jarego. Skład gatunkowy
chwastów w łanie jęczmienia jarego w niewielkim
stopniu ulegał zmianom pod wpływem zastosowania
wsiewek międzyplonowych koniczyn, natomiast liczebność
osobników poszczególnych gatunków ulegała
znacznym wahaniom. W łanie jęczmienia jarego
z wsiewką koniczyny czerwonej spośród gatunków
dwuliściennych najliczniej wystąpił Sonchus arvensis.
W uprawie jęczmienia z koniczyną białą i bez wsiewki
dominującymi gatunkami dwuliściennymi były
Viola arvensis oraz Sonchus arvensis. Dominującym
gatunkiem jednoliściennym we wszystkich obiektach
była Setaria pumila. Wprowadzenie wsiewek międzyplonowych
w postaci koniczyny czerwonej i białej
wyraźnie ograniczało wzrost i rozwój chwastów.
Wsiewki międzyplonowe koniczyny czerwonej w łanie
jęczmienia jarego lepiej ograniczały zachwaszczenie
chwastami dwuliściennymi, zmniejszyły istotnie
także liczbę chwastów jednoliściennych i ogółem zaś
koniczyny białej tylko liczbę chwastów jednoliściennych.
Zastosowanie herbicydu Chwastox Extra 300 SL
istotnie zmniejszyło świeżą masę chwastów występujących
w łanie jęczmienia jarego. Obecność wsiewki
wpływała na zróżnicowaną ogólną liczbę chwastów
w poszczególnych obiektach. Wsiewki międzyplonowe
wyraźnie ograniczały występowanie następujących
gatunków chwastów: Sonchus arvensis, Fallopia convolvulus,
Melandrium album, Amaranthus retroflexus,
Veronica arvensis i Medicago lupulina. Także biomasę
chwastów redukowały badane gatunki wsiewek. Stosowanie
herbicydu nie zróżnicowało liczby chwastów
jednoliściennych, co wynikało z zastosowania Chwastoxu
Extra 300 SL zwalczającego jedynie gatunki
dwuliścienne
Zachwaszczenie łanu ozimych odmian pszenicy orkisz (Triticum aestivum ssp. Spelta) uprawianych w zróżnicowanych warunkach nawożenia mineralnego i ochrony chemicznej
A field experiment was carried out in the years 2008-
2010 on rendzina soil. The aim of the study was to evaluate
weed infestation of winter spelt cultivars (‘Schwabenkorn’ and
‘Spelt I.N.Z.’) grown under different conditions of mineral
fertilization and chemical plant protection. In the experiment,
two levels of mineral fertilization were compared (kg × ha-1):
I. N 60; P 26.2; K 83; and II. N 80; P 34.9; K 99.6. The chemical
protection levels were as follows: A. Control treatment;
B. Mustang 306 SE, Stabilan 750 SL; C. Mustang 306 SE, Attribut
70 WG, Stabilan 750 SL; D. Mustang 306 SE, Attribut
70 WG, Alert 375 SC, Stabilan 750 SL.
Apera spica-venti, Setaria pumila, and Galium aparine
occurred in greatest numbers in the spelt wheat crop. The cultivar
‘Schwabenkorn’ was more competitive against weeds. The
number of dicotyledonous and monocotyledonous weeds, their
total number, and air-dry weight of weeds in the crop of this
cultivar were significantly lower compared to cv. ‘Spelt I.N.Z.’.
Chemical protection of spelt wheat decreased weed dry weight
compared to the control treatment without chemical protection.
The application of higher rates of mineral fertilizers slightly
increased the number of weeds but did not influence their dry
weight and number of weed species.Doświadczenie polowe przeprowadzono w latach
2008-2010 na rędzinie mieszanej wytworzonej z
opoki kredowej. Celem badań była ocena zachwaszczenia
ozimych odmian pszenicy orkiszowej (Schwabenkorn
i Spelt I.N.Z.) uprawianych w zróżnicowanych
warunkach nawożenia mineralnego i ochrony
chemicznej. Nawożenie mineralne przedstawiało się
następująco (w kg czystego składnika na hektar): I. N
60; P 26,2; K 83 oraz II. N 80; P 34,9; K 99,6. Poziomy
ochrony roślin obejmowały: A. Obiekt kontrolny;
B. Mustang 306 SE, Stabilan 750 SL; C. Mustang 306
SE, Attribut 70 WG, Stabilan 750 SL; D. Mustang 306
SE, Attribut 70 WG, Alert 375 SC, Stabilan 750 SL.
Największy udział w zbiorowisku chwastów,
niezależnie od czynników doświadczenia, miały Apera
spica-venti i Setaria pumila z klasy jednoliściennych,
z dwuliściennych zaś Galium aparine. Bardziej konkurencyjna
wobec chwastów była odmiana Schwabenkorn.
Zarówno liczba chwastów dwuliściennych, jednoliściennych
i ogółem, jak i powietrznie sucha masa
części nadziemnych chwastów w łanie tej odmiany
były istotnie mniejsze w porównaniu z odmianą Spelt
I.N.Z. Zastosowane chemiczne zabiegi ochrony roślin
zmniejszyły powietrznie suchą masę nadziemnych
części chwastów w odniesieniu do obiektu kontrolnego
bez ochrony.
A field experiment was conducted in the period 2006-
2008 on incomplete podzolic soil. The present study investigated
the effect of different doses of the herbicides Mustang
306 SE and Attribut 70 WG as well as of the foliar fertilizers
Insol 3 and FoliCare 18:18:18 on the biodiversity of weeds in
a winter triticale crop, ‘Todan’. The segetal flora was assessed
6 weeks after the application of the herbicides and before the harvest
of the triticale crop. The herbicides were applied together
at labelled doses as well as at doses reduced to 75% and by half.
Spraying with the foliar fertilizers was done twice during the
growing period. Plots in which no herbicides or foliar fertilizers
were used were the control treatment.
Matricaria maritima and Viola arvensis from the dicotyledonous
class were predominant in the winter triticale crop,
whereas Apera spica-venti was the dominant species among
the monocotyledons. The weed control efficacy of the reduced
herbicide doses was weaker compared to the labelled rates by,
respectively, from 6% to 9% at the first time of weed infestation
assessment and from 4% to 8% at the second assessment time.
Simultaneously, air-dry weight of weeds in the herbicide-treated
plots did not differ significantly. This indicates that it is possible
to reduce herbicide doses in a winter triticale crop without a risk
of increased weed infestation.Doświadczenie polowe przeprowadzono w latach
2006-2008 na glebie bielicowej niecałkowitej.
Badano wpływ zróżnicowanych dawek herbicydów
Mustang 306 SE i Attribut 70 WG oraz nawozów dolistnych
Insol 3 i FoliCare 18:18:18 na bioróżnorodność
chwastów w łanie pszenżyta ozimego ‘Todan’.
Florę segetalną oceniano 6 tygodni po zastosowaniu
herbicydów oraz przed zbiorem pszenżyta. Herbicydy
stosowano łącznie w pełnych zalecanych dawkach,
zredukowanych do 75% oraz w dawkach zmniejszonych
o połowę. Opryskiwanie nawozami dolistnymi
wykonano dwukrotnie w okresie wegetacji. Obiekt
kontrolny stanowiły poletka, na których nie stosowano
zarówno herbicydów, jak i nawozów dolistnych.
W łanie pszenżyta ozimego dominowały Matricaria
maritima i Viola arvensis z klasy dwuliściennych,
z jednoliściennych zaś Apera spica-venti. Skuteczność
chwastobójcza obniżonych dawek herbicydów była
słabsza niż pełnych zalecanych dawek odpowiednio od
6 do 9% w pierwszym terminie oceny zachwaszczenia
i od 4 do 8% w drugim. Jednocześnie powietrznie sucha
masa chwastów na obiektach herbicydowych nie
różniła się istotnie. Wskazuje to na możliwość obniżenia
dawek herbicydów w łanie pszenżyta ozimego bez
ryzyka zwiększenia poziomu zachwaszczenia
Wpływ chemicznej ochrony łanu na zawartość wybranych pierwiastków w ziarnie pszenicy orkisz (Triticum aestivum ssp. spelta)
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of chemical crop protection
on the content of N, P, K, Mg, Zn, Cu, Mn, and Fe in grain of 8 spelt wheat cultivars
(Franckenkorn, Badengold, Schwabenspelz, Oberkulmer Rotkorn, Ostro, Ceralio, Schwabenkorn,
and Spelt I.N.Z.). Chemical protection involved application of a fungicide, two herbicides
and a retardant. No plant protection agents were used in the control treatment.
The above spelt cultivars were grown in a monoculture on medium heavy mixed rendzina
soil. The study was carried out in 2009-2011, at the Bezek Experimental Farm, which belongs
to the University of Life Sciences in Lublin.
Among the spelt wheat cultivars compared, grain of cv. Ostro was characterized by
the highest content of nitrogen, phosphorus and manganese, whereas grain of cv. Franckenkorn
contained the largest amounts of potassium and magnesium. The highest amount
of zinc was found in grain of cv. Oberkulmer Rotkorn and that of copper – in grain of
cv. Spelt I.N.Z., while grain of cv. Schwabenkorn was found to be the richest in iron. Irrespective
of the cultivar, chemical plant protection significantly increased the copper content
in spelt grain and simultaneously decreased the magnesium content. The content of N,
Mg, Zn, Cu, and Mn in grain decreased in the successive years of the study
Wpływ poziomu agrotechniki na zachwaszczenie zasiewów nagoziarnistej i oplewionej odmiany owsa (Avena sativa L.)
The present study was carried out in the period 2007– 2009 in the Experimental Farm in Bezek near the city of Chełm. The aim of the investigation was to compare weed infestation of the husked (Krezus) and naked (Cacko) oat cultivars cultivated under conditions of different weed control treatments. The following weed control levels were compared: A – control object; B – harrowing twice; C – application of the herbicide Mustang 306 SE; D – herbicide Mustang 306 SE + foliar fertilizer Insol 3; E – herbicide Mustang 306 SE + two foliar fertilizers: Insol 3 and FoliCare 18:18:18. The husked oat cv. Krezus was more competitive against weeds. Number of dicotyledonous weeds and of monocotyledonous weeds, total weeds, and air-dry weight of above-ground parts of weeds in the crop of this cultivar were all significantly lower compared to the naked cv. Cacko. From the group of dicotyledonous species, Chenopodium album, Galinsoga parviflora, Matricaria maritima ssp. inodora, Polygonum aviculare, and Stellaria media were the dominant species in the crops of the oat varieties under investigation, whereas among the monocotyledonous species Echinochloa crus-galli, Setaria pumila, Apera spica-venti, and Elymus repens occurred in greatest numbers. The application of the herbicide Mustang 306 SE decreased the number of dicotyledonous weeds and air-dry weight of weeds, compared to the treatment in which mechanical weed control had been used
