Design of low-power permanent-magnet synchronous motor for use in high-density heat pump

Taking as input a specific geometry, it predicts steady-state losses of a design at an average rate of 0.85 seconds per analysis, orders of magnitude faster than existing finite-element methods. A wide design space is analyzed and, based on the necessary motor profile and manufacturing limits, an optimal design is selected. Subsequently, this motor was fabricated and integrated with a prototype design of a high-density heat pump. This application requires an unusually low motor profile - with the motor width being much (~ 10 x ) larger than its thickness - which has not been explored by other researchers. Furthermore, the design metrics specify a tight upper bound of 33.3 W on available power. Electrical characteristics are modeled and tested to determine optimal phase-excitation waveforms. Finally, power electronics with a sensorless control scheme are designed and incorporated using a custom-designed printed circuit board at an all-inclusive cost of under $50, which is well below the price of typical development control boards used to test prototype motors. Speeds of up to 7000 RPM were observed. At the design point of 5000 RPM, the motor delivered 35 mN-m of torque and drew 23.8 W of power, significantly below the available power budget.by David P. Intermittent Aeration Suppresses Nitrite-Oxidizing Bacteria in Membrane-Aerated Biofilms:A Model-Based Explanation

(MABRs) can make treatment of ammonium-rich wastewaters more energy-efficient,
especially within the context of short-cut ammonium removal. The challenge
is to exclusively enrich ammonium-oxidizing bacteria (AOB). To achieve
nitritation, strategies to suppress nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB)
are needed, which are ideally grounded on an understanding of underlying
mechanisms. In this study, a nitrifying MABR was operated under intermittent
aeration. During eight months of operation, AOB dominated, while NOB
were suppressed. On the basis of dissolved oxygen (DO), ammonium,
nitrite, and nitrate profiles within the biofilm and in the bulk,
a 1-dimensional nitrifying biofilm model was developed and calibrated.
The model was utilized to explore the potential mechanisms of NOB
suppression associated with intermittent aeration, considering DO
limitation, direct pH effects on enzymatic activities, and indirect
pH effects on activity via substrate speciation. The model predicted
strong periodic shifts in the spatial gradients of DO, pH, free ammonia,
and free nitrous acid, associated with aerated and nonaerated phases.
NOB suppression during intermittent aeration was mostly explained
by periodic inhibition caused by free ammonia due to periodic transient
pH upshifts. Dissolved oxygen limitation did not govern NOB suppression.
Different intermittent aeration strategies were then evaluated for
nitritation success in intermittently aerated MABRs: both aeration
intermittency and duration were effective control parameters

The clinical features of the piriformis syndrome: a systematic review
Piriformis syndrome, sciatica caused by compression of the sciatic nerve by the piriformis muscle, has been described for over 70 years; yet, it remains controversial. The literature consists mainly of case series and narrative reviews. The objectives of the study were: first, to make the best use of existing evidence to estimate the frequencies of clinical features in patients reported to have PS; second, to identify future research questions. A systematic review was conducted of any study type that reported extractable data relevant to diagnosis. The search included all studies up to 1 March 2008 in four databases: AMED, CINAHL, Embase and Medline. Screening, data extraction and analysis were all performed independently by two reviewers. A total of 55 studies were included: 51 individual and 3 aggregated data studies, and 1 combined study. The most common features found were: buttock pain, external tenderness over the greater sciatic notch, aggravation of the pain through sitting and augmentation of the pain with manoeuvres that increase piriformis muscle tension. Future research could start with comparing the frequencies of these features in sciatica patients with and without disc herniation or spinal stenosis
Identifying strategies to improve access to credible and relevant information for public health professionals: a qualitative study
BACKGROUND: Movement towards evidence-based practices in many fields suggests that public health (PH) challenges may be better addressed if credible information about health risks and effective PH practices is readily available. However, research has shown that many PH information needs are unmet. In addition to reviewing relevant literature, this study performed a comprehensive review of existing information resources and collected data from two representative PH groups, focusing on identifying current practices, expressed information needs, and ideal systems for information access. METHODS: Nineteen individual interviews were conducted among employees of two domains in a state health department – communicable disease control and community health promotion. Subsequent focus groups gathered additional data on preferences for methods of information access and delivery as well as information format and content. Qualitative methods were used to identify themes in the interview and focus group transcripts. RESULTS: Informants expressed similar needs for improved information access including single portal access with a good search engine; automatic notification regarding newly available information; access to best practice information in many areas of interest that extend beyond biomedical subject matter; improved access to grey literature as well as to more systematic reviews, summaries, and full-text articles; better methods for indexing, filtering, and searching for information; and effective ways to archive information accessed. Informants expressed a preference for improving systems with which they were already familiar such as PubMed and listservs rather than introducing new systems of information organization and delivery. A hypothetical ideal model for information organization and delivery was developed based on informants' stated information needs and preferred means of delivery. Features of the model were endorsed by the subjects who reviewed it. CONCLUSION: Many critical information needs of PH practitioners are not being met efficiently or at all. We propose a dual strategy of: 1) promoting incremental improvements in existing information delivery systems based on the expressed preferences of the PH users of the systems and 2) the concurrent development and rigorous evaluation of new models of information organization and delivery that draw on successful resources already operating to deliver information to clinical medical practitioners
Towards a standardization of biomethane potential tests

The biomethane potential (BMP) of these materials has to be determined to get insight in design parameters for anaerobic digesters. A workshop was held in June 2015 in Leysin Switzerland to agree on common solutions to the conundrum of inconsistent BMP test results. A discussion covers actions and criteria that are considered compulsory ito accept and validate a BMP test result; and recommendations concerning the inoculum substrate test setup and data analysis and reporting ito obtain test results that can be validated and reproduced.The workshop in Leysin, Switzerland, has been financed by the Swiss Federal Office for Energy, and co-sponsored by Bioprocess Control Sweden AB, Lund, Sweden. Smart Sensors and Virtual Physiology Human Approach as a Basis of Personalized Therapies in Diabetes Mellitus
Diabetes mellitus (DM) has a growing incidence and prevalence in modern societies, pushed by the aging and change of life styles. Despite the huge resources dedicated to improve their quality of life, mortality and morbidity rates, these are still very poor. In this work, DM pathology is revised from clinical and metabolic points of view, as well as mathematical models related to DM, with the aim of justifying an evolution of DM therapies towards the correction of the physiological metabolic loops involved. We analyze the reliability of mathematical models, under the perspective of virtual physiological human (VPH) initiatives, for generating and integrating customized knowledge about patients, which is needed for that evolution. Wearable smart sensors play a key role in this frame, as they provide patient’s information to the models
“It’s for us –newcomers, LGBTQ persons, and HIV-positive persons. You feel free to be”: a qualitative study exploring social support group participation among African and Caribbean lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender newcomers and refugees in Toronto, Canada
BACKGROUND: Stigma and discrimination harm the wellbeing of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people and contribute to migration from contexts of sexual persecution and criminalization. Yet LGBT newcomers and refugees often face marginalization and struggles meeting the social determinants of health (SDOH) following immigration to countries such as Canada. Social isolation is a key social determinant of health that may play a significant role in shaping health disparities among LGBT newcomers and refugees. Social support may moderate the effect of stressors on mental health, reduce social isolation, and build social networks. Scant research, however, has examined social support groups targeting LGBT newcomers and refugees. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore experiences of social support group participation among LGBT African and Caribbean newcomers and refugees in an urban Canadian city. METHODS: We conducted 3 focus groups with a venue-based sample of LGBT African and Caribbean newcomers and refugees (n = 29) who attended social support groups at an ethno-specific AIDS Service Organization. Focus groups followed a semi-structured interview guide and were analyzed using narrative thematic techniques. RESULTS: Participant narratives highlighted immigration stressors, social isolation, mental health issues, and challenges meeting the SDOH. Findings reveal multi-level benefits of social support group participation at intrapersonal (self-acceptance, improved mental health), interpersonal (reduced isolation, friendships), community (reciprocity, reduced stigma and discrimination), and structural (housing, employment, immigration, health care) levels. CONCLUSIONS: Findings suggest that social support groups tailored for LGBT African and Caribbean newcomers and refugees can address social isolation, community resilience, and enhance resource access. Health care providers can provide support groups, culturally and LGBT competent health services, and resource access to promote LGBT newcomers and refugees’ health and wellbeing
