    An elastic, plastic, viscous model for slow shear of a liquid foam

    We suggest a scalar model for deformation and flow of an amorphous material such as a foam or an emulsion. To describe elastic, plastic and viscous behaviours, we use three scalar variables: elastic deformation, plastic deformation rate and total deformation rate; and three material specific parameters: shear modulus, yield deformation and viscosity. We obtain equations valid for different types of deformations and flows slower than the relaxation rate towards mechanical equilibrium. In particular, they are valid both in transient or steady flow regimes, even at large elastic deformation. We discuss why viscosity can be relevant even in this slow shear (often called "quasi-static") limit. Predictions of the storage and loss moduli agree with the experimental literature, and explain with simple arguments the non-linear large amplitude trends

    Onset of centrifugal instability at a rotating cylinder in a stratified fluid

    In this experimental note, we consider the centrifugal instability of a laminar shear layer, generated by the impulsive start of the rotation of a circular solid cylinder about its vertical axis immersed in a linearly stratified fluid. The flow is determined by the Reynolds number, Re, based on the cylinder rotation rate and the cylinder radius, and the Froude number, Fr, represented by the ratio of the rotation frequency Ω over the buoyancy frequency N. The onset of the instability starts when the boundary layer reaches a certain thickness. We show for this boundary layer that there is a transition from the centrifugally unstable regime to a wave-like regime at Fr ≈ 1 and a stable flow below a critical Reynolds number. We focus on the centrifugally unstable regime Fr⪆1, for which the onset time and wavelength are predicted by scaling laws that depend on the Reynolds number. Agreement with the theoretical prediction of Kim and Choi [“The onset of instability in the flow induced by an impulsively started rotating cylinder,” Chem. Eng. Sci. 60, 599-608 (2005)] in a homogeneous fluid confirms that the instability of this boundary layer is not modified by the presence of stratification. These results therefore show that the centrifugal instability of the spin-up boundary is dominated by inertial motions, suggesting that close lateral boundaries, as in thin-gap stratified Taylor-Couette flow, increase the effects of buoyancy on the instability and wavelength.</p

    Data sharing and reanalysis of randomized controlled trials in leading biomedical journals with a full data sharing policy: survey of studies published in the BMJ and PLOS Medicine

    Objectives To explore the effectiveness of data sharing by randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in journals with a full data sharing policy and to describe potential difficulties encountered in the process of performing reanalyses of the primary outcomes. Design Survey of published RCTs. Setting PubMed/Medline. Eligibility criteria RCTs that had been submitted and published by The BMJ and PLOS Medicine subsequent to the adoption of data sharing policies by these journals. Main outcome measure The primary outcome was data availability, defined as the eventual receipt of complete data with clear labelling. Primary outcomes were reanalyzed to assess to what extent studies were reproduced. Difficulties encountered were described. Results 37 RCTs (21 from The BMJ and 16 from PLOS Medicine) published between 2013 and 2016 met the eligibility criteria. 17/37 (46%, 95% confidence interval 30% to 62%) satisfied the definition of data availability and 14 of the 17 (82%, 59% to 94%) were fully reproduced on all their primary outcomes. Of the remaining RCTs, errors were identified in two but reached similar conclusions and one paper did not provide enough information in the Methods section to reproduce the analyses. Difficulties identified included problems in contacting corresponding authors and lack of resources on their behalf in preparing the datasets. In addition, there was a range of different data sharing practices across study groups. Conclusions Data availability was not optimal in two journals with a strong policy for data sharing. When investigators shared data, most reanalyses largely reproduced the original results. Data sharing practices need to become more widespread and streamlined to allow meaningful reanalyses and reuse of data

    We report experimental study of the secondary modulational instability of a one-dimensional non-linear traveling wave in a long bounded channel. Two qualitatively different instability regimes involving fronts of spatio-temporal defects are linked to the convective and absolute nature of the instability.     Validity of observational evidence on putative risk and protective factors:appraisal of 3744 meta-analyses on 57 topics

    BACKGROUND: The validity of observational studies and their meta-analyses is contested. Here, we aimed to appraise thousands of meta-analyses of observational studies using a pre-specified set of quantitative criteria that assess the significance, amount, consistency, and bias of the evidence. We also aimed to compare results from meta-analyses of observational studies against meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and Mendelian randomization (MR) studies. METHODS: We retrieved from PubMed (last update, November 19, 2020) umbrella reviews including meta-analyses of observational studies assessing putative risk or protective factors, regardless of the nature of the exposure and health outcome. We extracted information on 7 quantitative criteria that reflect the level of statistical support, the amount of data, the consistency across different studies, and hints pointing to potential bias. These criteria were level of statistical significance (pre-categorized according to 10-6, 0.001, and 0.05 p-value thresholds), sample size, statistical significance for the largest study, 95% prediction intervals, between-study heterogeneity, and the results of tests for small study effects and for excess significance. RESULTS: 3744 associations (in 57 umbrella reviews) assessed by a median number of 7 (interquartile range 4 to 11) observational studies were eligible. Most associations were statistically significant at P < 0.05 (61.1%, 2289/3744). Only 2.6% of associations had P < 10-6, ≥1000 cases (or ≥20,000 participants for continuous factors), P < 0.05 in the largest study, 95% prediction interval excluding the null, and no large between-study heterogeneity, small study effects, or excess significance. Across the 57 topics, large heterogeneity was observed in the proportion of associations fulfilling various quantitative criteria. The quantitative criteria were mostly independent from one another. Across 62 associations assessed in both RCTs and in observational studies, 37.1% had effect estimates in opposite directions and 43.5% had effect estimates differing beyond chance in the two designs. Across 94 comparisons assessed in both MR and observational studies, such discrepancies occurred in 30.8% and 54.7%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Acknowledging that no gold-standard exists to judge whether an observational association is genuine, statistically significant results are common in observational studies, but they are rarely convincing or corroborated by randomized evidence

    Winding number instability in the phase-turbulence regime of the Complex Ginzburg-Landau Equation

    We give a statistical characterization of states with nonzero winding number in the Phase Turbulence (PT) regime of the one-dimensional Complex Ginzburg-Landau equation. We find that states with winding number larger than a critical one are unstable, in the sense that they decay to states with smaller winding number. The transition from Phase to Defect Turbulence is interpreted as an ergodicity breaking transition which occurs when the range of stable winding numbers vanishes. Asymptotically stable states which are not spatio-temporally chaotic are described within the PT regime of nonzero winding number.Comment: 4 pages,REVTeX, including 4 Figures.     The Jamming Perspective on Wet Foams

    Amorphous materials as diverse as foams, emulsions, colloidal suspensions and granular media can {\em jam} into a rigid, disordered state where they withstand finite shear stresses before yielding. The jamming transition has been studied extensively, in particular in computer simulations of frictionless, soft, purely repulsive spheres. Foams and emulsions are the closest realizations of this model, and in foams, the (un)jamming point corresponds to the wet limit, where the bubbles become spherical and just form contacts. Here we sketch the relevance of the jamming perspective for the geometry and flow of foams --- and also discuss the impact that foams studies may have on theoretical studies on jamming. We first briefly review insights into the crucial role of disorder in these systems, culminating in the breakdown of the affine assumption that underlies the rich mechanics near jamming. Second, we discuss how crucial theoretical predictions, such as the square root scaling of contact number with packing fraction, and the nontrivial role of disorder and fluctuations for flow have been observed in experiments on 2D foams. Third, we discuss a scaling model for the rheology of disordered media that appears to capture the key features of the flow of foams, emulsions and soft colloidal suspensions.     I review recent work on the ``phase diagram'' of the one-dimensional complex Ginzburg-Landau equation for system sizes at which chaos is extensive. Particular attention is paid to a detailed description of the spatiotemporally disordered regimes encountered.     Impact of Aldosterone Antagonists on Sudden Cardiac Death Prevention in Heart Failure and Post-Myocardial Infarction Patients: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials.

    BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Sudden cardiac death (SCD) is a severe burden of modern medicine. Aldosterone antagonist is publicized as effective in reducing mortality in patients with heart failure (HF) or post myocardial infarction (MI). Our study aimed to assess the efficacy of AAs on mortality including SCD, hospitalization admission and several common adverse effects. METHODS: We searched Embase, PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane library and clinicaltrial.gov for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) assigning AAs in patients with HF or post MI through May 2015. The comparator included standard medication or placebo, or both. Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were followed. Event rates were compared using a random effects model. Prospective RCTs of AAs with durations of at least 8 weeks were selected if they included at least one of the following outcomes: SCD, all-cause/cardiovascular mortality, all-cause/cardiovascular hospitalization and common side effects (hyperkalemia, renal function degradation and gynecomastia). RESULTS: Data from 19,333 patients enrolled in 25 trials were included. In patients with HF, this treatment significantly reduced the risk of SCD by 19% (RR 0.81; 95% CI, 0.67-0.98; p = 0.03); all-cause mortality by 19% (RR 0.81; 95% CI, 0.74-0.88, p&lt;0.00001) and cardiovascular death by 21% (RR 0.79; 95% CI, 0.70-0.89, p&lt;0.00001). In patients with post-MI, the matching reduced risks were 20% (RR 0.80; 95% CI, 0.66-0.98; p = 0.03), 15% (RR 0.85; 95% CI, 0.76-0.95, p = 0.003) and 17% (RR 0.83; 95% CI, 0.74-0.94, p = 0.003), respectively. Concerning both subgroups, the relative risks respectively decreased by 19% (RR 0.81; 95% CI, 0.71-0.92; p = 0.002) for SCD, 18% (RR 0.82; 95% CI, 0.77-0.88, p &lt; 0.0001) for all-cause mortality and 20% (RR 0.80; 95% CI, 0.74-0.87, p &lt; 0.0001) for cardiovascular mortality in patients treated with AAs. As well, hospitalizations were significantly reduced, while common adverse effects were significantly increased. CONCLUSION: Aldosterone antagonists appear to be effective in reducing SCD and other mortality events, compared with placebo or standard medication in patients with HF and/or after a MI
