A Tracking Fiber Detector based on Silicon Photomultipliers for the Kaos Spectrometer
A tracking detector based on two meters long scintillating fibers read out by
silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) is being developed for the Kaos spectrometer at
the Mainz Microtron MAMI. Results from a prototype setup using 2 mm square
fibers and large area SiPM readout are presented. The detection efficiency of
such a combination was measured to be between 83 and 100% depending on the
threshold on the SiPM amplitude. A Monte Carlo simulation based on a physical
model was employed in order to extract the photon detection efficiency of the

Localization and delocalization errors in density functional theory and implications for band-gap prediction
The band-gap problem and other systematic failures of approximate functionals
are explained from an analysis of total energy for fractional charges. The
deviation from the correct intrinsic linear behavior in finite systems leads to
delocalization and localization errors in large or bulk systems. Functionals
whose energy is convex for fractional charges such as LDA display an incorrect
apparent linearity in the bulk limit, due to the delocalization error. Concave
functionals also have an incorrect apparent linearity in the bulk calculation,
due to the localization error and imposed symmetry. This resolves an important
paradox and opens the possibility to obtain accurate band-gaps from DFT.Comment: 4 pages 4 figure
Giant Goos–Hänchen shifts and radiation-induced trapping of Helmholtz solitons at nonlinear interfaces
Giant Goos–Hänchen shifts and radiation-induced trapping are studied at the planar boundary separating two focusing Kerr media within the framework of the Helmholtz theory. The analysis, valid for all angles of incidence, reveals that interfaces exhibiting linear external refraction can also accommodate both phenomena. Numerical evidence of these effects is provided, based on analytical predictions derived from a generalized Snell’s law
