A search for flares and mass ejections on young late-type stars in the open cluster Blanco-1
We present a search for stellar activity (flares and mass ejections) in a
sample of 28 stars in the young open cluster Blanco-1. We use optical spectra
obtained with ESO's VIMOS multi-object spectrograph installed on the VLT. From
the total observing time of 5 hours, we find four H flares but
no distinct indication of coronal mass ejections (CMEs) on the investigated
dK-dM stars. Two flares show "dips" in their light-curves right before their
impulsive phases which are similar to previous discoveries in photometric
light-curves of active dMe stars. We estimate an upper limit of 4 CMEs per
day per star and discuss this result with respect to a semi- empirical
estimation of the CME rate of main-sequence stars. We find that we should have
detected at least one CME per star with a mass of 1-15 g
depending on the star's X-ray luminosity, but the estimated H fluxes
associated with these masses are below the detection limit of our observations.
We conclude that the parameter which mainly influences the detection of stellar
CMEs using the method of Doppler-shifted emission caused by moving plasma is

Investigating magnetic activity in very stable stellar magnetic fields: long-term photometric and spectroscopic study of the fully convective M4 dwarf V374 Peg
The ultrafast-rotating () fully convective
single M4 dwarf V374 Peg is a well-known laboratory for studying intense
stellar activity in a stable magnetic topology. As an observable proxy for the
stellar magnetic field, we study the stability of the light curve, and thus the
spot configuration. We also measure the occurrence rate of flares and coronal
mass ejections (CMEs). We analyse spectroscopic observations,
photometry covering 5 years, and additional photometry that expands the
temporal base over 16 years. The light curve suggests an almost rigid-body
rotation, and a spot configuration that is stable over about 16 years,
confirming the previous indications of a very stable magnetic field. We
observed small changes on a nightly timescale, and frequent flaring, including
a possible sympathetic flare. The strongest flares seem to be more concentrated
around the phase where the light curve indicates a smaller active region.
Spectral data suggest a complex CME with falling-back and re-ejected material,
with a maximal projected velocity of 675km/s. We observed a CME rate
much lower than expected from extrapolations of the solar flare-CME relation to

First release of the IPHAS catalogue of new extended planetary nebulae
Date of Acceptance: 30/06/2014We present the first results of our search for new, extended planetary nebulae (PNe) based on careful, systematic, visual scrutiny of the imaging data from the Isaac Newton Telescope Photometric Ha Survey of the Northern Galactic plane (IPHAS). The newly uncovered PNe will help to improve the census of this important population of Galactic objects that serve as key windows into the late-stage evolution of low- to intermediate-mass stars. They will also facilitate study of the faint end of the ensemble Galactic PN luminosity function. The sensitivity and coverage of IPHAS allows PNe to be found in regions of greater extinction in the Galactic plane and/or those PNe in a more advanced evolutionary state and at larger distances compared to the general Galactic PN population. Using a set of newly revised optical diagnostic diagrams in combination with access to a powerful, new, multiwavelength imaging data base, we have identified 159 true, likely and possible PNe for this first catalogue release. The ability of IPHAS to unveil PNe at low Galactic latitudes and towards the Galactic Anticentre, compared to previous surveys, makes this survey an ideal tool to contribute to the improvement of our knowledge of the whole Galactic PN population.Peer reviewe
The Local Group Census: planetary nebulae in IC 10, Leo A and Sextans A
In the framework of our narrow-band survey of the Local Group galaxies, we
present the results of the search for planetary nebulae (PNe) in the dwarf
irregular galaxies IC10, LeoA and SextansA. Using the standard on-band/off-band
technique, sixteen new candidate PNe have been discovered in the closest
starburst galaxy, IC10. The optical size of this galaxy is estimated to be much
larger than previously thought, considering the location of the new PNe in an
area of 3.6 kpc X 2.7 kpc. We also confirm the results of previous studies for
the other two dwarf irregular galaxies, with the detection of one candidate PN
in LeoA and another one in SextansA. We review the number of planetary nebulae
discovered in the Local Group to date and their behaviour with metallicity. We
suggest a possible fall in the observed number of PNe when [Fe/H]-1.0,
which might indicate that below this point the formation rate of PNe is much
lower than for stellar populations of near Solar abundances. We also find
non-negligible metallicity effects on the [OIII] luminosity of the brightest PN

Sociodemographic and clinical predictors of depression in children and adolescents: results of a two-year follow-up study
Depressive disorders are a main cause of disability-adjusted life years already in children and adolescents, in whom the clinical picture somewhat differs from adult-onset depression. Thus, we studied sociodemographic and clinical predictors of depression/dysthymia in a sample of minors. Our baseline sample (N=676) included patients at clinical high-risk for psychosis (CHR-P, n=183), inpatients admitted for non-psychotic, non-affective disorders (n=277), and community participants (n=216) of age 7.0 to 17.9 years (43.8% male). They were assessed by clinical psychologists for mental disorders and symptoms with various clinical interviews including the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview for Children and Adolescents, which was also used to assess depression/dysthymia in the CHR-P group at 1- and 2-year-follow up (n=117 and 73, respectively). Analyses followed a stepwise procedure at baseline with stepwise logistic regression analyses to identify the final baseline model that was tested in the follow-up samples. The final cross-sectional model included nationality and 13 clinical variables Mild depressive symptoms in particular played a decisive role here. Variables contributing significantly to the prediction varied over time, indicating that CAD depression/dysthymia may require different predictors depending on the follow-up time. Furthermore, the prospective accuracy of ruling out depression/dysthymia was superior to the accuracy of ruling it in. This lower positive likelihood ratio might be overcome in future by stepwise approaches that further stratify risk in those initially identified as at increased risk of depression/dysthymia
Dysfunctions in brain networks supporting empathy: An fMRI study in adults with autism spectrum disorders
The present study aimed at identifying dysfunctions in brain networks that may underlie disturbed empathic behavior in autism spectrum disorders (ASD). During functional magnetic resonance imaging, subjects were asked to identify the emotional state observed in a facial stimulus (other-task) or to evaluate their own emotional response (self-task). Behaviorally, ASD subjects performed equally to the control group during the other-task, but showed less emotionally congruent responses in the self-task. Activations in brain regions related to theory of mind were observed in both groups. Activations of the medial prefrontal cortex (MPFC) were located in dorsal subregions in ASD subjects and in ventral areas in control subjects. During the self-task, ASD subjects activated an additional network of frontal and inferior temporal areas. Frontal areas previously associated with the human mirror system were activated in both tasks in control subjects, while ASD subjects recruited these areas during the self-task only. Activations in the ventral MPFC may provide the basis for one's “emotional bond” with other persons’ emotions. Such atypical patterns of activation may underlie disturbed empathy in individuals with ASD. Subjects with ASD may use an atypical cognitive strategy to gain access to their own emotional state in response to other people's emotions
DE Canum Venaticorum : a bright, eclipsing red dwarf–white dwarf binary
Context. Close white dwarf–red dwarf binaries must have gone through a common-envelope phase during their evolution. DE CVn is a detached white dwarf–red dwarf binary with a relatively short (∼8.7 h) orbital period. Its brightness and the presence of eclipses makes this system ideal for a more detailed study.
Aims. From a study of photometric and spectroscopic observations of DE CVn we derive the system parameters that we discuss in the framework of common-envelope evolution.
Methods. Photometric observations of the eclipses are used to determine an accurate ephemeris. From a model fit to an average lowresolution spectrum of DE CVn, we constrain the temperature of the white dwarf and the spectral type of the red dwarf. The eclipse light curve is analysed and combined with the radial velocity curve of the red dwarf determined from time-resolved spectroscopy to derive constraints on the inclination and the masses of the components in the system.
Results. The derived ephemeris is HJDmin = 2 452 784.5533(1) + 0.3641394(2) × E. The red dwarf in DE CVn has a spectral type of M3V and the white dwarf has an effective temperature of 8 000 K. The inclination of the system is 86+3◦ −2 and the mass and radius of the red dwarf are 0.41 ± 0.06 M and 0.37+0.06 −0.007 R, respectively, and the mass and radius of the white dwarf are 0.51+0.06
−0.02 M and 0.0136+0.0008 −0.0002 R, respectively.
Conclusions. We found that the white dwarf has a hydrogen-rich atmosphere (DA-type). Given that DE CVn has experienced a common-envelope phase, we can reconstruct its evolution and we find that the progenitor of the white dwarf was a relatively lowmass star (M ≤ 1.6 M). The current age of this system is 3.3−7.3 × 109 years, while it will take longer than the Hubble time for DE CVn to evolve into a semi-detached system

New young planetary nebulae in IPHAS

We search for very small-diameter galactic planetary nebulae (PNe) representing the earliest phases of PN evolution. The IPHAS catalogue of H-emitting stars provides a useful basis for this study since all sources present in this catalogue must be of small angular diameter. Methods. The PN candidates are selected based on their location in two colour-colour diagrams: IPHAS (r' - H) vs. (r' - i'), and 2MASS (J - H) vs. (H - ). Spectroscopic follow-up was carried out on a sample of candidates to confirm their nature. Results. We present a total of 83 PN candidates. We were able to obtain spectra or find the classification from the literature for 35 candidates. Five of these objects are likely to be new PNe, including one large bipolar PN discovered serendipitously close to an emission-line star. PN distances deduced from extinction-distance relations based on IPHAS field-star photometry are presented for the first time. These yield distance estimates for our objects in the range 2 kpc and 6 kpc. From the data in hand, we conclude that four of the discovered objects are probably young PNe.Peer reviewe
