    Collective intellectual property rights for the development of creative tourist districts: an exploration

    In this paper the institution of Collective Intellectual Property Rights (CIPR) is proposed as a regulatory tool for the development of Creative Tourist Districts based on local knowledge and trust, described as a superior organisational model of destinations to alternative models founded on individual property. As there are various types and contexts of applications of CIPR, as well as different development objectives to be achieved, the paper designs a strategy to maximise the expected impacts from case to case. It then proposes “area labels”, based on a combination of controls on quality and delimitation of areas of validity of the right, as the best instrument to foster a strategic orientation to quality across the local tourism industry.

    Cooling trapped atoms in optical resonators

    We derive an equation for the cooling dynamics of the quantum motion of an atom trapped by an external potential inside an optical resonator. This equation has broad validity and allows us to identify novel regimes where the motion can be efficiently cooled to the potential ground state. Our result shows that the motion is critically affected by quantum correlations induced by the mechanical coupling with the resonator, which may lead to selective suppression of certain transitions for the appropriate parameters regimes, thereby increasing the cooling efficiency.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures; version published in PR

    Patient-Centered Implementation of Statin Therapy in Patients With Type 2 Diabetes

    Heart disease is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in Americans with type 2 diabetes mellitus. The American Diabetes Association recommends statins and lifestyle modifications for all patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus for the prevention of atherosclerotic cardiovascular events. A patient-centered approach to primary prevention is encouraged, yet there are no specific instructions regarding implementation. The Statin Choice Decision Aid is a tool designed to facilitate shared decision-making between the patient and the provider in the clinical setting. The 2018 American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association guidelines for the primary prevention of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease for patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus were implemented into practice by prescribing statins and patient education for the appropriate patients. The Statin Choice Decision Aid was integrated into the electronic health record and accessed by the provider during the clinical encounter with the patient to help guide the decision to initiate statin therapy. Results yielded an impressive 82% increase in the provider’s statin prescribing practice. In addition, more than half (75%) of those patients had their individual atherosclerotic cardiovascular risk score computed and documented in the electronic health record. The Doctor of Nursing Practice quality improvement project helped to achieve optimal and patient-centered approach to successfully adhering to the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association guidelines

    A new look at Spitzer primary transit observations of the exoplanet HD189733b

    Blind source separation techniques are used to reanalyse two exoplanetary transit lightcurves of the exoplanet HD189733b recorded with the IR camera IRAC on board the Spitzer Space Telescope at 3.6ÎŒ\mum during the "cold" era. These observations, together with observations at other IR wavelengths, are crucial to characterise the atmosphere of the planet HD189733b. Previous analyses of the same datasets reported discrepant results, hence the necessity of the reanalyses. The method we used here is based on the Independent Component Analysis (ICA) statistical technique, which ensures a high degree of objectivity. The use of ICA to detrend single photometric observations in a self-consistent way is novel in the literature. The advantage of our reanalyses over previous work is that we do not have to make any assumptions on the structure of the unknown instrumental systematics. Such "admission of ignorance" may result in larger error bars than reported in the literature, up to a factor 1.61.6. This is a worthwhile trade-off for much higher objectivity, necessary for trustworthy claims. Our main results are (1) improved and robust values of orbital and stellar parameters, (2) new measurements of the transit depths at 3.6ÎŒ\mum, (3) consistency between the parameters estimated from the two observations, (4) repeatability of the measurement within the photometric level of ∌2×10−4\sim 2 \times 10^{-4} in the IR, (5) no evidence of stellar variability at the same photometric level within 1 year.Comment: 43 pages, 18 figure

    Backstreaming of Impurity Gas Through a Leak in Pressurized Vessel

    The presence of a leak in a vessel containing pure gas can induce the contamination by atmospheric gas diffusing into the vessel. In order to avoid this, a gas which has to be kept pure also in presen ce of a leak is usually pressurized, to reduce the flow of contaminating gas through the leak owing to the molecular drag by the outstreaming pure gas. In this paper, a simple model calculation of ba ckstreaming based on the solution of the diffusion + drag equation in cylindrical coordinates is presented. It is shown that both the pressure difference and the dimension of the leak are critical in determining the contaminating flow, a maximum in the backstreaming flow appearing when the drag velocity of the outstreaming gas equals the diffusion velocity

    Blind extraction of an exoplanetary spectrum through Independent Component Analysis

    Blind-source separation techniques are used to extract the transmission spectrum of the hot-Jupiter HD189733b recorded by the Hubble/NICMOS instrument. Such a 'blind' analysis of the data is based on the concept of independent component analysis. The de-trending of Hubble/NICMOS data using the sole assumption that nongaussian systematic noise is statistically independent from the desired light-curve signals is presented. By not assuming any prior, nor auxiliary information but the data themselves, it is shown that spectroscopic errors only about 10 - 30% larger than parametric methods can be obtained for 11 spectral bins with bin sizes of ~0.09 microns. This represents a reasonable trade-off between a higher degree of objectivity for the non-parametric methods and smaller standard errors for the parametric de-trending. Results are discussed in the light of previous analyses published in the literature. The fact that three very different analysis techniques yield comparable spectra is a strong indication of the stability of these results.Comment: ApJ accepte
