    Three-Dimensional Analysis of Wakefields Generated by Flat Electron Beams in Planar Dielectric-Loaded Structures

    An electron bunch passing through dielectric-lined waveguide generates Cˇ\check{C}erenkov radiation that can result in high-peak axial electric field suitable for acceleration of a subsequent bunch. Axial field beyond Gigavolt-per-meter are attainable in structures with sub-mm sizes depending on the achievement of suitable electron bunch parameters. A promising configuration consists of using planar dielectric structure driven by flat electron bunches. In this paper we present a three-dimensional analysis of wakefields produced by flat beams in planar dielectric structures thereby extending the work of Reference [A. Tremaine, J. Rosenzweig, and P. Schoessow, Phys. Rev. E 56, No. 6, 7204 (1997)] on the topic. We especially provide closed-form expressions for the normal frequencies and field amplitudes of the excited modes and benchmark these analytical results with finite-difference time-domain particle-in-cell numerical simulations. Finally, we implement a semi-analytical algorithm into a popular particle tracking program thereby enabling start-to-end high-fidelity modeling of linear accelerators based on dielectric-lined planar waveguides.Comment: 12 pages, 2 tables, 10 figure

    Asteroseismology of KIC 8263801:Is it a member of NGC 6866 and a red clump star?

    We present an asteroseismic analysis of the Kepler light curve of KIC 8263801, a red-giant star in the open cluster NGC 6866 that has previously been reported to be a helium-burning red-clump star. We extracted the frequencies of the radial and quadrupole modes from its frequency power spectrum and determined its properties using a grid of evolutionary models constructed with MESA. The oscillation frequencies were calculated using the GYRE code and the surface term was corrected using the Ball & Gizon(2014) prescription. We find that the star has a mass of M/M⊙=1.793±0.072M/M_{\odot} = 1.793\pm 0.072, age t=1.48±0.21t=1.48\pm 0.21 Gyr and radius R/R⊙=10.53±0.28R/R_{\odot} = 10.53\pm 0.28. By analyzing the internal structure of the best-fitting model, we infer the evolutionary status of the star KIC 8263801 as being on the ascending part of the red giant branch, and not on the red clump. This result is verified using a purely asteroseismic diagnostic, the Ï”c−ΔΜc\epsilon_{c}-\Delta\nu_{c} diagram which can distinguish red giant branch stars from red clump stars. Finally, by comparing its age with NGC 6866 (t=0.65±0.1t=0.65 \pm 0.1 Gyr) we conclude that KIC 8263801 is not a member of this open cluster

    Lowering of surface melting temperature in atomic clusters with a nearly closed shell structure

    We investigate the interplay of particle number, N, and structural properties of selected clusters with N=12 up to N=562 by employing Gupta potentials parameterized for Aluminum and extensive Monte-Carlo simulations. Our analysis focuses on closed shell structures with extra atoms. The latter can put the cluster under a significant stress and we argue that typically such a strained system exhibits a reduced energy barrier for (surface) diffusion of cluster atoms. Consequently, also its surface melting temperature, T_S, is reduced, so that T_S separates from and actually falls well below the bulk value. The proposed mechanism may be responsible for the suppression of the surface melting temperature observed in a recent experiments.Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures, 1 table, REVTeX 4; submitted to Phys.Rev.

    Spatial Control of Photoemitted Electron Beams using a Micro-Lens-Array Transverse-Shaping Technique

    A common issue encountered in photoemission electron sources used in electron accelerators is the transverse inhomogeneity of the laser distribution resulting from the laser-amplification process and often use of frequency up conversion in nonlinear crystals. A inhomogeneous laser distribution on the photocathode produces charged beams with lower beam quality. In this paper, we explore the possible use of microlens arrays (fly-eye light condensers) to dramatically improve the transverse uniformity of the drive laser pulse on UV photocathodes. We also demonstrate the use of such microlens arrays to generate transversely-modulated electron beams and present a possible application to diagnose the properties of a magnetized beam.Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1609.0166

    FTT-Ethernet: A Flexible Real-Time Communication Protocol that Supports Dynamic QoS Management on Ethernet-based Systems

    Ethernet was not originally developed to meet the requirements of real-time industrial automation systems and it was commonly considered unsuited for applications at the field level. Hence, several techniques were developed to make this protocol exhibit real-time behavior, some of them requiring specialized hardware, others providing soft-real-time guarantees only, or others achieving hard real-time guarantees with different levels of bandwidth efficiency. More recently, there has been an effort to support quality-of-service (QoS) negotiation and enforcement but there is not yet an Ethernet-based data link protocol capable of providing dynamic QoS management to further exploit the variable requirements of dynamic applications. This paper presents the FTT-Ethernet protocol, which efficiently supports hard-real-time operation in a flexible way, seamlessly over shared or switched Ethernet. The FTT-Ethernet protocol employs an efficient master/multislave transmission control technique and combines online scheduling with online admission control, to guarantee continued real-time operation under dynamic communication requirements, together with data structures and mechanisms that are tailored to support dynamic QoS management. The paper includes a sample application, aiming at the management of video streams, which highlights the protocol’s ability to support dynamic QoS management with real-time guarantees

    Whither Capitalism? Financial externalities and crisis

    As with global warming, so with financial crises – externalities have a lot to answer for. We look at three of them. First the financial accelerator due to ‘fire sales’ of collateral assets -- a form of pecuniary externality that leads to liquidity being undervalued. Second the ‘risk- shifting’ behaviour of highly-levered financial institutions who keep the upside of risky investment while passing the downside to others thanks to limited liability. Finally, the network externality where the structure of the financial industry helps propagate shocks around the system unless this is checked by some form of circuit breaker, or ‘ring-fence’. The contrast between crisis-induced Great Recession and its aftermath of slow growth in the West and the rapid - and (so far) sustained - growth in the East suggests that successful economic progress may depend on how well these externalities are managed
