    Quasi-reversible Magnetoresistance in Exchange Spring Tunnel Junctions

    We report a large, quasi-reversible tunnel magnetoresistance in exchange-biased ferromagnetic semiconductor tunnel junctions wherein a soft ferromagnetic semiconductor (\gma) is exchange coupled to a hard ferromagnetic metal (MnAs). Our observations are consistent with the formation of a region of inhomogeneous magnetization (an "exchange spring") within the biased \gma layer. The distinctive tunneling anisotropic magnetoresistance of \gma produces a pronounced sensitivity of the magnetoresistance to the state of the exchange spring

    Spin-dependent tunneling in modulated structures of (Ga,Mn)As

    A model of coherent tunneling, which combines multi-orbital tight-binding approximation with Landauer-B\"uttiker formalism, is developed and applied to all-semiconductor heterostructures containing (Ga,Mn)As ferromagnetic layers. A comparison of theoretical predictions and experimental results on spin-dependent Zener tunneling, tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR), and anisotropic magnetoresistance (TAMR) is presented. The dependence of spin current on carrier density, magnetization orientation, strain, voltage bias, and spacer thickness is examined theoretically in order to optimize device design and performance.Comment: 9 pages, 13 figures, submitted to PR

    Fast Quasi-Threshold Editing

    We introduce Quasi-Threshold Mover (QTM), an algorithm to solve the quasi-threshold (also called trivially perfect) graph editing problem with edge insertion and deletion. Given a graph it computes a quasi-threshold graph which is close in terms of edit count. This edit problem is NP-hard. We present an extensive experimental study, in which we show that QTM is the first algorithm that is able to scale to large real-world graphs in practice.     Quintessence, the Gravitational Constant, and Gravity

    Dynamical vacuum energy or quintessence, a slowly varying and spatially inhomogeneous component of the energy density with negative pressure, is currently consistent with the observational data. One potential difficulty with the idea of quintessence is that couplings to ordinary matter should be strongly suppressed so as not to lead to observable time variations of the constants of nature. We further explore the possibility of an explicit coupling between the quintessence field and the curvature. Since such a scalar field gives rise to another gravity force of long range (\simg H^{-1}_0), the solar system experiments put a constraint on the non-minimal coupling: |\xi| \siml 10^{-2}.Comment: 9 pages, a version to be published in Phys.Rev.

    Cosmological perturbations in kk-essence model

    Subhorizon approximation is often used in cosmological perturbation theory. In this paper, however, it is shown that the subhorizon approximation is not always a good approximation at least in case of kk-essence model.     Brane-World Black Hole Solutions via a Confining Potential

    Using a confining potential, we consider spherically symmetric vacuum (static black hole) solutions in a brane-world scenario. Working with a constant curvature bulk, two interesting cases/solutions are studied. A Schwarzschild-de Sitter black hole solution similar to the standard solution in the presence of a cosmological constant is obtained which confirms the idea that an extra term in the field equations on the brane can play the role of a positive cosmological constant and may be used to account for the accelerated expansion of the universe. The other solution is one in which we can have a proper potential to explain the galaxy rotation curves without assuming the existence of dark matter and without working with new modified theories (modified Newtonian dynamics).Comment: 12 pages, to appear in PR

    Gauss-Bonnet brane gravity with a confining potential

    A brane scenario is envisaged in which the mm-dimensional bulk is endowed with a Gauss-Bonnet term and localization of matter on the brane is achieved by means of a confining potential. The resulting Friedmann equations on the brane are modified by various extra terms that may be interpreted as the X-matter, providing a possible phenomenological explanation for the accelerated expansion of the universe.     Lattice Instability in the Spin-Ladder System under Magnetic Field

    We study theoretically the lattice instability in the spin gap systems under magnetic field. With the magnetic field larger than a critical value h_{c1}, the spin gap is collapsed and the magnetization arises. We found that the lattice distortion occurs in the spin-ladder at an incommensurate wavevector corresponding to the magnetization, while it does not occur in the Haldane system. At low temperatures the magnetization curve shows a first order phase transition with this lattice distortion.Comment: 10 pages, REVTEX, 2 figures(ps file), minor change
